Just saw Ang Lee's "Lust Caution". I was speechless. For those who have not seen this film, please go. It's great to see this Oscar winning director takes such risk in making movies that  he is so passionate about. His focus and dedication is pure inspiration. To me, just within this one film, in his masterful way, Ang has redefined Asian Cinema and Asian portrayal on screen. I am in awe...

I saw "Lust Caution" a second time this weekend. The experience was even better than the first. I stayed away from reading the subtitles and had more time watching all the details on screen. Please go see this amazing film.

  • My trip to SF

    2007-09-06 7:38AM / 標準BLOG

Last week, I flew to San Francisco to attend the cast party premiere screening of FALLING FOR GRACE at the Presidio Theater.  This party is thrown by the amazing theater owner, Frank Lin, who offers to screen Fay's film at 2 of his theaters after he read an article of how much Fay is pushing her film and finding screeners. The article told the story about Fay taking 8 years to have this project done. When the film screened at Kabuki Sunset, she was passing out fortune cookies outside to encourage people to come. Hence Frank Lin decided to throw a premiere party for the cast on Aug 23 at his Presidio Theater and screened "Falling for Grace" at his Four Star Theater in S.F. Needless to say, I had to go to lend my support to my on screen daughter, Grace (filmmaker, Fay Ann Lee). My whirlwind trip consisted of 2 evenings and 3 days. I attended the premiere party, also visited with my 4 amazing childhood Maryknoll buddies and their extended families. They all came to the premiere screening at the Presidio. I also got to visit my brother, Ronnie, his wife Cathy, and see their new home in Leland Way in Oakland for the first time.  To top it off, I  drove, for the very first time, by myself to SF from Oakland to the Preisdio Theater, to the after party downtown, then back to Oakland. I got to see the Bay bridge at night and took the Bart during this trip. This may sound like nothing to those who are frequent long distant drivers, and who are very familiar with SF. But for me, I felt like I've done the Olympics...Hence there will be more trips to SF in the future, to visit family and friends. Now I feel like an old timer to S.F. and had gained moocho confidence. On another note,  for those who live in SF, please go to see "Falling For Grace " at the Four Star Theater. We need every bit of your support. Thanks and more later...

  • Fireflies and Manhattan

    2007-07-22 5:27PM / 標準BLOG

I had the most unusual afternoon during my last visit to NYC. One afternoon, I was walking from 20th street uptown to attend a play reading, then suddenly, at the corner of 8th ave and 28th street, I saw a man carrying an umbrella in one hand, while his other hand  was palm up. He was trying to protect a firefly from some light drizzle. At first I thought that this man must be a bit cuckoo. It wasn't until I looked closely that I actually saw this firefly, hovering 3 inches above his palm. The sky was getting gray and dark, and this man had become the temporary caregiver to a dainty firefly.  I was mesmerized. This was as surreal as a Fellini movie. As I walked a few feet further, right at that magical corner, I saw hundreds of fireflies, fleeting in and out of small hedges in that small piece of green in front of a tall apartment building. Everything seemed so contrary to my expectation. Who would have thought that there would be a quiet tranquil piece of green in front of a drab 40 storey building along 8th Ave? I had to stop and take this moment in. Then a woman stopped beside me and said, "Isn't this amazing? I always stop when I see the fireflies". I asked her if this is a common sight. She said "Yes, they only come out right before sunset.,and when it's quiet". I said " That's strange, it's such a noisy corner to me, with all the cars honking loudly either at the passersby or at the car in front..." She said, "but they have a different sensibility, they just feel the quietness of their space, they don't hear what we hear." Wow, I suddenly realized what "true quietness" meant - got to learn from the fireflies... Right then, I was yanked out of a Zen moment by several loud thunderclaps, then drenched by the pelting rain. I began walking briskly uptown, my eyes caught up by the dramatic silhouette of tall buildings against the ghostly sky. Occupants standing in front of their tall windows, looking down, watching us "crazy pedestrians" running for shelter from the heavy rain. I could not take my eyes off these ominous shadows - I wonder who looked more crazy at that moment, "us" who were running like mad dogs for a better shelter on the wet pavement or "them" who were secretly gazing, trapped behind their safe windows, wishing they could join in the running, the crazy commotion, the frenzy, the feeling of the wet, hard rain and the smell of refreshed city  air...

These days, when I travel, I am so focused on packing, getting to the airport early, get an aisle seat, calling my friend before the plane takes off to make sure someone is getting me at the airport, then calling again when the plane is on the runway to make sure my friend is waiting for me at the baggage claim. While flying, I'll either burrow myself in a magazine or a book that I bring along. I hardly look around to see who is sitting next to me. I'm so self absorbed in my tasks.
Today the lady who sat next to me asked if I could turn the air down, I was a bit annoyed at first, but politely complied. To my surprise, she thanked me, then proceeded to tell me that this was her first time flying. She introduced herself and told me what a wonderful time she had visiting her brother in California. She lives in North Carolina and she usually takes the train when she travels because she is afraid of flying. She told me of the many pictures that she took on this trip. She had such warmth and beauty in her eagerness to share. Her sincerity and friendliness broke my barriers.  I started caring about her. I asked If she was okay or if she was still nervous now that she took her first  flight. She smiled, like a little girl,  and said that she liked it and will do it again the next time she travels. We had a very pleasant conversation. After we parted ways in St. Louis, I actually missed chatting with her. As I continued my flight to  New York, I  realized I had a window seat, which I never do.  I  lifted the shade and looked down. I saw these beautiful formation of clouds below, as if  they were folds of angels breath supporting the plane. I was mesmerized by this simple vision. I realized I have been so focused these days that I forgot to take in life...
