I'm gonna write about something that's going on in the entertainment world in Korea...something that I've been really interested in and been following for a while now.

    The Situation (Thus Far):
Park JaeBum was the leader of 2PM, a very popular Korean boy group.  He was born in the US (3rd generation Korean-American) and before he went to Korea, didn't really speak Korean nor know a lot about Korean culture.  In the past week, some netizens dug up his 4 year-old Myspace comments regarding his life in Korea.  Here's an image of some of the stuff he said...people mostly focused on "Korea is gay, I hate Koreans etc..."

Netizens went out and called him a traitor to the country and there was even an online petition calling for him to commit suicide.  He released a statement of apology saying that he has changed since those days.  He said that he was having a hard time adjusting to life in Korea and he was venting to his friend.  Other members of 2PM wrote supportive messages on their blogs but were met with floods of negative comments.

After 4 days of chaos, Jay released a statement that he was quitting 2PM because he didn't want to bring down the other members and was returning to America the same day.  Fans found out about his flight and rushed to the airport...resulting in over 2,000 fans going to the airport to stop him from leaving.  All 7 members of 2PM took him to the airport in tears and he left Korea.  Upon landing in Seattle, some fans went to the airport to pick him up but none approached him.  He was reported to have burst into tears when he saw his mother and only repeated the word sorry, over and over.

Currently, 2PM's fanclub is boycotting 2PM without Jay.  Even though JYPE (the entertainment company) has sent out a official notice that 2PM will continue on without Jay asking fans to support Jay's decision to quit.  Fans do not believe that JB quit on his own accord (Jay was signed to a 7-year contract which isn't close to being over, and entertainment companies are of course, first and foremost, businesses -__-") and are therefore trying to force JYPE to bring Jay back.  They have sent out petitions, taken out ads in newspapers and even held a silent protest in front of the JYPE building.  They have even returned over 3,000 unopened 2PM CDs...even signed ones.

    My Take on the Situation:
I personally think that the netizens went too far in their criticism of JB.  Yes, he was immature but who isn't when they're 17?  Persecuting him for comments he wrote four years ago when he had moved to a country where he didn't know the language, didn't know the culture and was put into an environment entirely different to what he has experience in his life....who wouldn't be unhappy?  Especially for somebody who came to the country hoping to get famous and training everyday in dancing, singing, rapping...uncertain about their future.  I also thought that the translations of the comments were taken out of proportion due to a misunderstanding of American culture...

I moved to Korea with some experience in Korean culture and a little bit of the language...and even then it was hard for me.  As an Asian-American, most people who see me in Korea assume that I'm Korean-American and as I've written in previous blog, I have been discriminated against countless times because my Korean isn't fluent.  I can't imagine how hard it was for him at that age and situation.  I really hope his company can let him return to the group and to Korea.

He has trained for four years to become the leader of a Korean pop group...but it only took 4 days for all his hard work to go down the drain.  Many fans and other entertainers have come out and showed their support for him and even the netizens who criticized him before are retracting their comments but JYPE still hasn't confirmed Jay's return.  I do think that on some level it is JYPE's responsibility to make sure that their trainees are taken care of when they first arrive, helping them adapt to life in Korea and culture shock.  If he hadn't felt so lonely and out of place he might of have positive comments back then.

Korea has been notorious for their netizen armies that will fixate on something negative and tear down celebrities and regular citizens.  Choi Jin Shil, known as Korea's sweetheart committed suicide just a year ago because netizens accused her of being loan shark to her best friend's husband (who committed suicide earlier due to a failed business attempt).

I could write about this stuff forever but I won't...gotta get back to cleaning!  What do you guys think of the situation?

Last but not least, here are some random videos of JaeBum and 2PM ^^

This one is him singing/rapping 'Just Friends' by MusiqSoulchild.  He's a brilliant dancer and his singing has improved a LOT from his beginning days.
Fans wrote him a song...hoping that he will come back soon. Quite touching ~ I actually cried watching it ~~ there are English subtitles.
LAST: 2PM's Again & Again Music video...their most popular song to date.  I found one with English subtitles too =]

yeah, been following this on Popseoul too...i mean, i understand the Koreans' (or any other nation that is) frustration with what Jay wrote, but if it was written by somebody less famous and not under public limelight, i guess this whole thing won't come to surface...
if we step into Jay's shoes and think from his point of view, we could understand his frustrations at that time as well...
anyway...it's sad to see a talent go away, but i'll treat this as his vacation, and i hope to see him on stage again...
p/s many people work real hard in the Kpop scene (or any entertainment industry) but do not get enough amount of applause and appreciation, but instead people are more interested in scandals and mistakes...

Give the guy a break already. He wrote those sentiments when he was in a totally different state of mind 4 years ago. He hasn't tried to deny he wrote those things or once felt like that. He's contrite. I think his mgmt company gave in too easily and didn't support their artist. It's all about $ and perhaps jype shot themselves in the foot. Drama! We'll see...you'll keep us updated, 'kay?

I think they should forgive the guy, and give him a chance. After all he has been working towards a career in his home country. For him to do this, means he is now probably a changed person from when he was before.

The hardest thing in life, is to be upfront and be honest about how we feel. More importantly, to discuss in detail, and forgive what others have said in the past. Because it is only through talk and forgiveness, that understanding between people is created.

I can relate to this chap, because I have been accused of something similar in the past........

One thing that really annoyed me was back over a year ago, I was accused of being a 'saint' by one of the girl members on AnD because of my views and some of the things I've been talking about, such as my belief in God, Buddha and reincarnation etc. And I remember feeling really bad because she was portraying me as a person who because of my 'saintly' ideals (which I feel nothing wrong about having), that I am incapable of understanding how girls feel, and socialising with them, having fun with them etc. and knowing all other kinds of people in the process. That's a load of bollocks in my opinion. I am not a bad person, and I can have fun if you allow me. I don't demonise people for their beliefs and personally I am a very liberal person. I have friends from all walks of life whether straight, gay or bi, and I don't mind knowing either any of them. Some of my best friends had even changed sex - so nothing is not known to me! I feel that from my viewpoint, I am as free I want to be. It may seem I have a conservative personal viewpoint in terms of religion, but that is because I want others to be aware of what our real purpose in life is. I am not conservative in terms of viewpoint. What people don't know is, God/Buddha wanted us all to live happily, but if you know Them in your heart, you will live even more happier because you will not have fear of death, and when your physical life finishes on Earth, you will take this love of them with you.

People do not know how I really feel..... I'm the sort of person, that if you are good to me, I could give you the world if I could. I want everyone to be happy and to find their own paradise.....but I can only do so much. I feel helpless sometimes because people can be so easily made upset. Like I made a comment to Sky Tao a while back about Chinese girls dating Western guys. Now personally I don't mind Chinese girls doing this....part of my family is after all English (aunts/uncles married with English guys/girls)....but the argument that I put to her is if ALL HK girls say want to marry a Westerner, what chance is there left for the poor HK guy? He's already looked down upon (in overall HK society) in some parts as being a nerd and incapable of standing up on his own two feet (general consensus). To have HK girls have preference of Western guys over HK guys......that completely destroys his life, and his overall confidence as a man. That is why he will feel inferior and being undermined...because of this attitude held by overall society. Had HK girls say 'Nope I'm deciding to not go for a foreigner, I want a Chinese boyfriend' the outlook for them (and HK's overall economic performance) would be different. This is because the confidence of a strong relationship the breadwinner has (who is traditionally held as the guy), gets carried into society.......as a strong social foundation. If more HK men are given the respect and dignity they deserve, HK girls wouldn't need to look to Westerners for spouses....

Don't get me wrong. HK girls are very nice (for example) but to my knowledge most are nowadays very hard to get on with, and find it hard to find a husband. The reason for this is because, they are fiercely independent physically, mentally and financially. The girls have been taught by their families that they have to look their best, act their best, and be with the best. The best (to many people) means those with status, with good looks, those in society with positions of power who are well educated, and those who are financially stable. A good majority of HK guys are not in these categories and so they fall out of being voted. Why else the explosion in the number of marriages of HK Chinese in the mainland for the last few years? Because of the extremely high demands of HK Chinese girls....the HK guys are so 'afraid' of being with such women, they'd rather be happy with a mainlander who would have less demands. But then again, HK influences the mainland, and even the mainlanders now are beginning to have this attitude......in this respect my recent blog on the subject of 'having a girl is like running a business' is I feel, not without reason! ^^
