  • 1st Annual Filipino-American Visionary Awards, Kodak Theater, March 7, 2008

    Sunday, Jun 21, 2009 5:34AM / Members only

I attended the 1st Annual Filipino American Visionary Awards that was held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood back on March 8, 2008.  I was happy to see both worlds of Filipino-American talents and Pinoy talents under one roof.  It was an amazing experience!

After walking down the red carpet and completing one interview, my date and I took our seats inside the Kodak Theater.  I swear that whenever I watched the Academy Awards, it looked like the theater was large and grand when watching the show from television.  It was nothing like that when we were inside.

Anyway, I am getting off topic here.  I had the experience to live in the Philippines for one year.  I was born in the United States and after the first 13 years of my life in Chicago, my parents moved the family to their homeland, the Philippines.  Never thought we would stay pass the summer months.  But, I am glad that we did.

Now that I am older, I would tell the younger generation of Filipino-Americans to visit the Philippines or better yet, live and experience there for a longer period of time and you will come to appreciate how much a rich culture they have and not to bash or slam it.

At the Kodak Theater that night, to meet the top Pinoy comedians back in the day (1980) like Tito, Vic & Joey and Dolphy, my past flashed back in front of my eyes.  At first, living in the Philippines, I was treated like a celebrity during my early teen years because I came from America.  But, that fever died down and now I felt like I was living the life of a Pinoy.

Always the saving graces for me are television and laughter.  To tune in to "Eat Bulaga" (Tito, Vic & Joey) and "John & Marsha (Dolphy)," I laughed and was

entertained.  Though, I do not speak a word of Tagalog, I pretty much understood the jokes.

That was 1980 - 1981 (also witnessing a new young sensation by the name of Lea Salonga in her own soap opera show), this was 2008.  To see them meet today's Filipino-American talents that were there such as Dave Batista (WWE), Christine Gambito (Happyslip), Apl de Ap (Black Eyed Peas), just to name a few was an interesting mix.

Interwined are Pinoys like Martin Nievera and Manny Pacquiao spoke in the same vein about Filipino-American Nia Peeples ("Fame," "Walker, Texas Ranger," "The Party Machine") and the Iron Chef himself, all this was happening to my joy.

Here is a teaser video (above) of what happened that evening, enjoy.
  • Stephen Chow and Xu Jiao on FLiPPED SWiTCH

    Saturday, Jan 10, 2009 2:53PM / Members only

Just got the news that Hong Kong funnyman Stephen Chow's "CJ7" was the top grossing Chinese-language film in Hong Kong for 2008, according to data released by the territory's Motion Picture Industry Association (MPIA).

With that announcement, this is a perfect segue for me to tell you about an online show that I am currently producing (as well as doing camera).  Created and developed by Edward J. Mallillin, the show is called, FLiPPED SWiTCH and it is a destination talk show / series.  With a cast of characters working together to provide viewers entertainment through stories and guest interviews, the show focuses on celebrites, community activists, politicians -- at times, with an Asian flare.

In the last year, we have interviewed John Cho, Tamlyn Tomita, James Kyson Lee, Alicia Braga, Lynn Chen, Neil Patrick Harris, Jokoy, Randy Couture, Henry O, Camile Velasco, Quentin Tarantino, Michelle Krusiac, Bobby Lee, Theresa Cheung, James Saito, Apl.de.ap, Karina Smirnoff, Christine Gambito, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Michael Yo, Wayne Wang and Russell Peters, just to name a few.

FLiPPED SWiTCH includes the cast of Cheryl Noe, Earl M. Baylon, Clarinda Morales and Edward J. Mallillin among many others that bring the show to your entertainment senses.

One of the recent interviews we proudly had was with filmmaker Stephen Chow and actress Xu Jiao discussing about their recent film, "CJ7."  Click below to see our interview:

  • Looking Back: Producing "Mad Cowgirl"

    Thursday, Dec 18, 2008 10:41AM / Members only

    LOOKING BACK...

I produced a film back in 2005 called, "Mad Cowgirl."  Directed by Gregory Hatanaka ("Until The Night"), the film starred a cool cast of indie actors that I have come to respect and later become friends with, most especially, the film's lead, Sarah Lassez (having worked with Gregg Araki's "Nowhere," Abel Ferrara's "The Blackout" and Robert M. Young's "The Roosters").  So challenging and daring her character's journey was on the script, Sarah brought it all into fruition...and then some.  The consumate professional, that she is.

The film also stars Walter Koenig (Lt. Chekov of the original "Star Trek"), James Duval ("The Doom Generation," "Independence Day," "Donnie Darko," "Go"), Devon Odessa ("My So-Called Life," "The Omega Code," "Fade"), Vic Chao ("Miss Congeniality 2," "24") and Christo Dimassis ("Audie & The Wolf," "Inside Irvin")

"Mad Cowgirl" won rave reviews as well as being honored with two awards at the Silverlake Film Festival as Best Feature and, deservingly so, to Sarah, Best Performance Award.  It was also Fangoria Magazine's Video-Of-The-Month in its February, 2007 issue.  And, due to popular demand when the film made its World Premiere at San Francisco Indiefest in 2006, a third screening was held...during the week of the Superbowl.  All three screenings had large turnouts.

The film was released in 2006 across the United States in a limited theatrical run and it premiered on DVD the year after.  The DVD I hear from various circles and online fan forums is that the film has become a fan favorite and on its way of acheiving cult status.  I don't know about you but, having your film reach cult status means more to me than any award given.

I am proud of my producing duties on "Mad Cowgirl" and that I hope you will be entertained when you see the film.  It is now available at Amazon and Neflix as well as Borders, Virgin and Blockbuster Online.  It is also available on Video-On-Demand through Amazon Unbox, EZTakes and DVD Wagon.

I worked on other projects before and after "Mad Cowgirl."  But, I find "Mad Cowgirl" my proudest moment.  I also make an appearance in the film.

Attached is our trailer...albeit it is an old trailer..but, you can get the idea.  Enjoy!

    Edwin
