All three crew described the object as “flying saucer-shaped” and circled by flashing lights. They reported it to senior officers, who passed on the report to Britain’s UFO investigators.
The incident happened as the helicopter was returning to the MoD’s St Athan base near Cardiff, where it is stationed.
The chopper was at 500ft and waiting to land when the crew saw the UFO speeding towards them from below.
A source said: “It closed in at great speed, aiming straight at the helicopter.
“The chopper had to swerve sharply to avoid being hit. The guys said if they’d stayed where they were, they’d be dead – it would’ve been a direct hit.
“They are convinced it was a UFO. It sounds far-fetched, but they know what they saw.
“These guys are hardened professionals and know people will take the mickey, but they are certain they saw a UFO.”
The source added: “After the near-collision they decided to follow it to find out what the hell it was. They belted across the Bristol Channel in pursuit, but it was too quick. They got to the North Devon coast and had to turn back because they were running low on fuel.”
The chopper is crammed with hi-tech cameras and surveillance gear, but the UFO somehow avoided being caught on film.
Strangely, the crew could not see the craft with night-vision goggles – but all said it was “clearly visible” to the naked eye on the night of June 7.
South Wales Police said last night: “We can confirm the Air Support Unit sighted an unusual aircraft. This was reported to the relevant authorities for their investigation.”
The MoD, which usually investigates UFO sightings, said: “We’ve heard nothing about this. But it is certainly not advisable for police helicopters to go chasing what they think are UFOs.”

A police helicopter had a near miss with a UFO in what appears to have been one of the first sightings of its kind.
The helicopter, with a three-man crew, was forced to swerve sharply to avoid being hit by the UFO.
The bizarre incident took place near an RAF base outside Cardiff, South Wales, where the helicopter is based.

The police Eurocopter, an EC135T21, was hovering in the sky above RAF St Athan late at night, waiting to land, a police spokeswoman confirmed.
While she went on to confirm the sighting of what is termed as an "unusual aircraft", she went out of her way to avoid using the term UFO.
However, since the object was flying and has not been identified, it appears to satisfy all the relevant criteria to be referred to as a UFO.
While police took a low-key approach to the whole UFO affair today, they also quietly dismissed more dramatic reports of what had happened.
"South Wales Police can confirm its air support unit sighted an unusual aircraft. This was reported to the relevant authorities for their investigation," police said in a brief statement.
"There are a wide variety of aircraft which come in a range of different shapes and sizes and in all probability this sighting has just confirmed that one of these was in the area at the relevant time."
The extra-terrestrial encounter happened just before 1am on June 8.

Most complex crop circle ever discovered in British fields
The most complex, "mind-boggling" crop circle ever to be seen in Britain has been discovered in a barley field in Wiltshire.
The circle is a coded representation of pi to the 10th significant figure The formation, measuring 150ft in diameter, is apparently a coded image representing the first 10 digits, 3.141592654, of pi.
it is has appeared in a field near Barbury Castle, an iron-age hill fort above Wroughton, Wilts, and has been described by astrophysicists as "mind-boggling".Michael Reed, an astrophysicist, said: "The tenth digit has even been correctly rounded up. The little dot near the centre is the decimal point.
"The code is based on 10 angular segments with the radial jumps being the indicator of each segment.
"Starting at the centre and counting the number of one-tenth segments in each section contained by the change in radius clearly shows the values of the first 10 digits in the value of pi."
Lucy Pringle, a researcher of crop formations, said: "This is an astounding development - it is a seminal event."
Mathematics codes and geometric patterns have long been an important factor in crop circle formations. One of the best known formations showed the image of a highly complex set of shapes known as The Julia Set, 12 years ago.

據香港《大公報》報道，該個麥田圈本月較早前在英國華亞特郡一個鐵器時代的山上城堡巴伯里堡(Barbury Castle)出現，起初發燒友和專家都覺得這個四十五米寬的圖案深不可測，但曾在密蘇里州立大學任教的天體物理學家里德日前宣布破解了它的意思。他對該麥田圈的照片作出分析後發覺它是圓周率π頭十個數字的圖案呈現。
圓心外面，一個個的圓形大多只劃到一截曲線，直徑便中途拉長，而若把整個圈平分為十分，那些曲線所占的“十分之一”的數量可以象征3.141592654的十個數字；接近圓心的圓點相當于小數點。這圖案是一個“分形(fractal)幾何圖案”。
科學家認為這是英國有史以來最複雜的麥田圈。著名麥田圈專家露西-普林格爾指里德的發現驚人而具突破性。
