Old School Baile Funk mix
Tuesday, Mar 3, 2009 12:43AM / Standard Entry
Haaksman is in Rio….again. He claims its for “label” business, but everytime I skype with him, he’s in a rush because he HAS to go to the beach.
Well, I wish I was in Rio too, and so does Joyce Muniz. Which is why we decided to do a mix of some of the records that we picked up from Rio when we were there last Summer. Most of the tunes in the mix are from vinyl, from the days when they still pressed up Baile Funk onto wax. Some real classics in this mix.

The Six Degrees of Baile Funk
Thursday, Feb 26, 2009 10:59PM / Standard Entry
Just got off tour with MPHO as support for Mongrel last weekend. It was two weeks a heck of a lot of fun. During this trip, I managed to break my headphones and get addicted to Roast Chicken flavoured crisps. Everything went pretty smoothly, everyone showed up on time for the gigs, except for one time when Drew, Mongrel’s guitarist, who missed his train from London to Sheffield. Dude turned up ten minutes before the show, calm and composed, just picked up his guitar and do his thing. Respect! I guess being in a band with Pete Doherty means that nothing can faze you, eh? Anyways, Here’s a pic.
Now to why this post is called what it is.
After the Brighton gig, we went and checked out Dj Donaeo play. Man, I love me some UK Garage/Funky. Donaeo smashed it, as well as Nice and Niche, who gave me a mixtape. The tape is sick (you can down download it from their myspace here), and the last track freaked me out. The tune is called “Make it funky for me” by Attaca Pesante ft. Shea. Its a Funky version of the Will.i.am track “Make it funky”, which is his take on Baile Funk. I’m being a music nerd now, but I get excited about stuff like that! You know, just how one type of music influences another… maybe I’ll come up with a UKG inspired Baile Funk track someday.
So attached are the two tunes I was talking about…. I had to take the Attaca Pesante track straight off the mixtape… I couldn’t find it anywhere! If anyone knows where I can buy UKG tunes online please let me know!

Weekend Review and Mongrel Tour
Tuesday, Jan 27, 2009 1:39AM / Standard Entry
Had a great gig in Geneva last Friday at le Zoo club. Me and Joyce Muniz tore it up to a great crowd of Genevans(?) and Brazilians. Big shout out to Rico, Steff and Dj Schnausi for their wonderful hospitality. As per usual, I forgot my camera, and was only able to take one half decent photo with my iphone…
Saturday was the birthday party of my radio station, FM4. I actually almost didnt make it back in time to play there, because of a snow storm in Geneva which delayed all flights coming in and out of the airport. It was proper airport nightmare. Luckily, I did manage to make it back only 3 hours later than scheduled, just back in time to see Deichkind play a wicked set of trashy electro combined with witty lyrics and an amazingly choreographed live show that was complete with illuminated costumes. The crowd went nuts for them. Photo taken from my crappy phone cam, again…
This Sunday I’ll be off on UK tour as the support act to UK indie supergroup Mongrel. We will be hitting up many cities in the UK, so please check the dates on their site or mine and come by to the shows if you are in the area! In the meantime, here is a remix that myself and Motorpitch did for their current single.
Mongrel - Hit from the morning sun (Dj Beware and Motorpitch rmx)
I’m off to pack my camera in my bag already, so you can actually see some good photos next time!

Back in Europe

So, Haaksman and I just got back from our gigs in Asia. It was a fun trip, gigs were great, plus we also managed to squeeze in a few days of holiday in between. In this trip, I also decided to give up smoking… I succeeded for about a week.
Our first stop was Hong Kong for the infamous Pimpin’ Aint Easy night. Pimpin’ Aint Easy is definitely THE night out in Hong Kong for eclectic dance music- a small intimate club with a great crowd who just love to hear all the latest sounds. A big shout out to the hosts of this wonderful night, my good friends Kid Fresh and Dj Enso, for always bringing the good stuff to Hong Kong, as well as keeping the vodka (over)flowing! After the gig, we all went and ate at Chui Wah, my favourite post gig restaurants. I think one of the things that I miss the most about living in Hong Kong is the possibility to get a proper meal at anytime of the day. Hong Kong is just one of those cities that never sleeps and never rests, a place where you can get whatever you want whenever you want.
After spending a few days in Hong Kong buying stuff and visiting family and friends we went on to Taipei, where we were invited to play by local dj legend and all round man of good taste DJ Mykal. Haaksman and I got there a day earlier to check out the city. Taipei is a cool city with a strong Japanese influence and excellent food - big shout out to DJ Noodles for taking us to the amazing food spots! The club where we played, Mint, was in the world’s tallest building, the Taipeh 101. Party was big fun, and I tried to compete with DJ Mykal and Haaksman in drinking Tequila shots- I was destroyed because I am a crap at drinking.
Some pics:
Once again, a big fat thank you to Kid Fresh, Enso, Mykal, Noodles, Alive Not Dead and everyone else who took care of us this trip!

Stats
- Dj Beware makes it easy for clubbers to lose their...Dj Beware makes it easy for clubbers to lose their
minds on the dancefloor to his unique style of
putting together ass shaking music.
It all started for Beware in Hong Kong about 15 years
ago, as a skateboard kid who went and bought music
that he heard in skate videos, which was mainly hip
hop, reggae, punk, rock; a little soul, jazz and drum n
bass. And since we are talking about the 90s here,
Beware also got hold of a fair share of house, techno
and dance to throw into his collection. At that time this
kid Beware wasn't collecting music to spin at parties or
anything like that - he was just doing it because he
loved it.
Djing came a couple of years later, when Beware saw
former DMC world champ Dj Tommy cutting up records
in the BFD skate store in Hong Kong. From that point
on, Beware would start lugging his records to a friend's
house to practice his mixing and scratching. This friend
would be left in peace 2 years later when Beware
decided to invest in his own pair of 1210s and mixer.
Fast forward to the year 2000. Beware enters his first
DMC battle in Hong Kong. He comes in 2nd. The next
year he comes back to take the title and manages to
make it to the top 13 in the World Finals in 2001 and in
2002, entertaining and surprising the crowd at Brixton
Academy with his creative sets that incorporated
Screaming Jay Hawkins, Britney Spears, Bad
Company, Michael Jackson and even the soundtrack
to Dirty Dancing!
Since then, Beware's unique and eclectic style of djing
has brought him to clubs and festivals in Europe, Asia,
Middle East and Australia. He has also toured with and
collaborated with artists such as German Reggae artist
Patrice, Viennese electronic musician I Wolf of the Sofa
Surfers. Nowadays, Dj Beware juggles his time
between club djing across the globe, hosting a popular
daily mix show "Unlimited" on Radio FM4, plus doing
remixes, productions and mixes for various artists and
labels.
