  • How do you sample an old song?

    Lots of friends always ask me how I cut up and create the sounds I use on in songs. Actually, there's a long history of sampling thru Hip Hop and other music genres.

    I've used a lot of programs to do my sampling, using my own original sources, or copyright-cleared sounds. I always carry a mic around with me wherever I go.

    This is an amazing Youtube video documentary about the history of the "Amen" break, with an introduction to the use of old recordings to create new music.

    What do you think of musicians sampling old recordings to make new songs?

    sampling is invaluable to me ... although I hardly ever use the recognisable samples in a finished track, they inspire the sound design & get the ball rolling.
