A shiny white healthy smile is something that most people want to have. Discolored smiles or a lot of cavities can be the cause of embarrassment for many people. Getting braces or having to have a root canal can make us feel demoralized. People spend millions of dollars every year trying to perfect their smiles and teeth. The truth is that, for the most part, these extremely healthy smiles can be obtained through simple proper teeth care. Caring for your teeth doesn't have to be such a chore or hard to do. Here are some easy things to start doing right away to improve the appearance and health of your teeth.

Keep away from foods that can stain your teeth. Nutrition is important for your teeth. We all know that it's best to eat healthy foods and avoid junk food; not everyone knows, however, that the benefits of this start in your mouth. Your mouth, like the rest of your body, responds well to essential nutrients, while too much sugar and acidity (including many fruits) can be harmful. It's well known that sugar contributes to cavities, and the acidity of beverages like soda also erodes the enamel of your teeth.

The color or your gums is a good indication of how healthy they are. Ideally, your gums should be firm and a light pinkish color. It's important to visit the dentist if your gums are painful, swollen, very red or soft to the touch, as this may indicate a gum disease such as gingivitis. Luckily you can cure gingivitis and a dentist will help you with that. The trick is to get to the dentist as quickly as possible because if you do not treat gingivitis as soon as possible it can lead to severe problems. It can even deteriorate the bones that hold your teeth in place -Scary!

It's not at all difficult to properly care for your teeth and gums. In fact, most of the time there isn't any thought involved at all. It only takes some regular attention in the morning and at night, and your dentist will soon be surprised at how little there is for him to do. Still, that doesn't mean that you can skip steps or ignore them altogether. You need to pay attention to your teeth and make sure that you care for them properly. Good dental health is essential, not only for your teeth and gums, but for the condition of the rest of your body as well.
