  • June Letter from Daniel Wu (taken from the Official Daniel Wu Newsletter)

    Thursday, May 30, 2002 9:09PM / Standard Entry

Hello Everybody! It's me, Daniel! Welcome to all you new people on the list. I seem to be getting more and more people on here everyday! Yes, this is actually me, Daniel Wu; writing to all of you and it is only me reading all of your mails. I am managing all the e-mails and newsletters by myself; it's a difficult job! But in my effort to keep in contact with all of you I will keep working hard on this!

First things first. I would like to talk about some technical issues:

#1. I'm getting so much mail everyday, so it is very, very important that you DO NOT send me any forwarded mail. This means jokes, chain letters or any documents over 100k. I know you may think this kind of stuff is important but it blocks up the e-mail account and prevents other people from writing in. So to be fair to everybody, PLEASE only original messages! I will automatically delete and block sender on anything else.

#2. Please spread the word to anyone who wants to subscribe to this newsletter to please do so. I can no longer spend the time to add everyone to the newsletter list myself. So if you want to receive these newsletters please sign up.

With your help I can continue managing the e-mails smoothly and efficiently. Thanks a lot!

OK...After I finished working on The Peeping, I've been on a short break from making to work on some personal projects, which I will tell you more about when the time is right. I was alos in Taiwan doing the new Biore for Men commercial. I had a fun time this year. Those of you in Taiwan should be able to see it soon! I have also been learning how to do DV movie editing on my new computer. It's a very difficult and time consuming process but it is also very fun to edit your own movies at home! Also as some of you may have seen in the newspaper I have doing some artwork. I have always loved art since I was a small boy so I have decided to spend some time doing this. I've been painting and doing some photography. I will post some of my photos on this newsletter hopefully sometime soon. Please give me your comments! I have received many letters about the movie The Peeping. Many of you are upset that I would do this movie and have been worrying about my image. One thing I must make clear, The Peeping IS NOT a "porn" or Category III movie. It is a IIB, which means it is for mature audiences, it is not meant for everybody to watch. Unfortunately the movie distribution company decided to focus on the "sexy" part of the movie rather than the story to promote it. If you were to watch the movie, you would find that the love scenes in the movie amount to maybe three minutes total. Three minutes out of ninety minutes is hardly what I would call "porn". I chose to work on this project because I found the story and the character interesting to me. I remind everyone that I am an ACTOR, I am not a singer or popstar. So I'm not as concerned with my image as a person as I am with my ability to do my job as an actor. In fact it is my duty to convince the audience that the person on screen is anything BUT the real Daniel Wu. That is part of what acting is about for me. For those of you who have been following my movies from the beginning, you know that I have always done "controversial" and non-standard roles. That is my choice as an actor and I will continue my career in this manner. I enjoy exploring different roles because it gives me deeper insight on not only my acting but the general human condition as well.

This doesn't guarantee that every movie I do will be great or good. That is up to the director. It also doesn't mean that you must watch every movie I do, that is up to you. You have the freedom to choose just like me. I apologize if people feel upset about my decision but it is important to me that you all understand my point of view.

Next I would like to answer some questions:

Many of you have been wondering how to get my first movie Bishonen on VCD or DVD. Luckily Yonfan, the director, has a website where you can get Bishonen and Peony Pavilions. The address is: www.yonfan.com. Check it out!

Also I would like to clear up my Bio a little bit:

I was born in San Francisco, Ca- USA. My Mother and Father are both from Shanghai. That makes me 100% Shanghainese. I am not mixed at all, even though I may look it. Maybe I ate too many hamburgers when I was in the States-hehehe!

I currently live in Hong Kong and am usually here most of the year. I try to go home and visit my Mother and Father when I get time off.

For university, I went to the University of Oregon and received a B-Arch in Architecture and a minor in Art History graduating in 1997. It was also here where I started the University of Oregon Wushu Team, which is a program that is still running strong today! Go Ducks!

    My current mailing address is:
    6/F Prosperous Centre
    1 Knutsford Terrace,
    T.S.T. Kowloon
    Hong Kong

If you would like to receive an autographed photo of me, please send a self-addressed envelope to the above address!

OK That's it for now! Remember...Don't buy pirate VCDs or DVDs!
    Take care!

    Love,
    Daniel Wu

  • Happy Easter from Daniel! (taken from the Official Daniel Wu Fan Newsletter)

    Friday, Mar 1, 2002 12:14PM / Standard Entry

    Hello everybody and happy Easter!!!!

It's me Daniel again! Seems like this newsgroup has gotten much bigger after the release of "Love Undercover". I'm glad that all of you liked this movie. Becasue of all of your support, you were able to boost the box office ratings. Thank you!

I also want to say thanks to everyone who showed their support at the Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia premiere showings of Princess D. It was nice to see so many of you come and support the movie. So far I think Princess D is my favorite film to date. If you haven't seen it yet take some time to see it, it has a very special message for everyone!

My trip to Singapore and Malaysia was fun! Our schedules were very very tight so we could hardly catch out breath before we had to go off to our next event. But these kinds of promotions are always this way. Too many things to do and not enough time! Again thanks to all my Singaporean and Malaysian friends out there for showing up at the events and giving us all that support!

Next week sometime I should be going to Taiwan to promote Princess D. I do not know the exact schedule yet but it will be pretty soon! I will also be starting a new movie in the middle of April. So I will be getting busy again! My unofficial rest period is over!

I got some letters from some of you who didn't like "Beauty and the Breast" very much saying that you thought the message was very stupid and shallow. Although I agree this movie was not the best, there are some merits deserving a bit of credit. "Beauty and the Breast" is basically telling us that we do not need to lie to to get ahead in life. We do not need to pretend we are something we are not or pretend to have something you don't have. If you be yourself you are most likely going to be better off. In the movie my friend Mario pretends to have cancer to get Yuki to like him but in the end she finds out and he pays for his mistake. Breast boosting medicine is also a kind of lie too. You don't need to have big breast for people to like you or respect you. So who you are is not based on these types of things, and people will like you for who you are and not what you pretend to be. This will get you much further in the long run. If you see the movie in this light I think you will look at it differently. I actually had a lot of fun making this movie because a lot of the comedy parts Francis Ng and I made up ourselves. It was a very good experience for me.

In the future I will probably be doing many different types of movies. Some of which you may like and some of which you may not like. It will probably be the same for me, I might like some, I might not like others but I will never know until I try. It is my job as an actor to explore and discover different things. This is what I like most about my job. Sometimes I might be a bad guy sometimes I will be a nice, cute, sweet guy. None of these characters are the real me, they are just people in a story I'm trying to become. These are my choices and I really enjoy them. I think you can try to do it too. Maybe not in acting, but in everyday life. Don't be afraid to try something different or new. If you feel something in your heart it doesn't hurt to try. Don't worry what other people think. The worst thing that could happen is that you realize it's not for you and you go on and try something else. These are the things that can make your life more fun and interesting,! Who knows? You may even discover something new about yourself, wouldn't that be great!

OK, one last thing I want to say before I go….to all of you still in school and getting ready for exams "Jia You!" or "Ka Yau!" or "Keep Working Hard!" you can do it! Remember find some way to reward yourself when you're finished!

    Until next time, take care!

  • Happy Chinese New Year! ( taken from the Official Daniel Wu Newsletter)

    Friday, Feb 22, 2002 12:34PM / Standard Entry

Hello and Happy Chinese New Year everyone! I hope everybody has had a good holiday season. I had a wonderful vacation with my family in France. I was able to snowboard too! Snowboarding is one of my favorite sports but I've have had little chance to do so since moving to Hong Kong. I had a very busy past few months so this vacation came just in time. Before my vacation I just finished filming "The Police Force Wants Me to Get Married!"(Sun Zat Si Mui). This was a kind of romantic comedy with me and Miriam Yueng (Yueng Chien Wa). It was an interesting project to work on for me because it was first romantic comedy. Previously I did "Beauty and the Breast"(Fung Hung Bei Cup) with Francis Ng and Michelle Reiss. I'm not sure if many of you saw this movie but I had a very fun time making it. It was first comedy movie so everything was new to me and I learned a lot form the experience. I also enjoyed working with Francis again, he is one of my favorite Hong Kong actors. Starting next week I will be promoting "The Police Force Wants Me to
Get Married!" and "Princess D"(Seurng Fei), both films are expected to be released in March and hopefully you will all get a chance to see them! Go to the movie theatres don't buy pirate VCDs! I'm happy to see that the list of new people on this list is getting bigger and bigger with people writting to me from all over the world! I read every e-mail sent to me and your support is very appreciated. Thank You! I must remind you all that you MUST NOT send forwarded mail, junk mail or large memory files to me. These types of files
take up a lot of memory on my e-mail account and sometimes will block other people's e-mails from coming in. So from now on these types of mails will be deleted immediately and I may have to block senders if it becomes too much. So please be fair and considerate! Also remember that my Chinese reading is not too good so if you write in English I will definately be able to read every word! My plans for the year of the Horse are quite simple...take it easy! The last two years I was working all the time very little time to relax. Even not enough time to write to all of you! So this year I will be more selective with my work and spend more time enjoying life! I hope to travel more, read more, learn more, watch more movies, etc. Well, I hope this letter finds everyone happy and in good health and I wish everyone a good year!

    Take Care!

  • Hi it's me Daniel again! ( taken from the official Daniel Wu Fan Newsletter)

    Friday, Nov 23, 2001 9:11AM / Standard Entry

    Hello everyone!
How are you all? From now on all my messages will be coming from this Newsletter group. It seems to be the best way to solve most of my e-mailing problems. It will also make it more convieniant for me to write more often.

Thanks to everyone for your letters. I read everyone myself and I really enjoy them very much. Your words of support are very much appreciated. Remember I still can't read Chinese(but I'm learning!) So I can only see the letters that are in English.

Recently I have been quite busy with filming and promotions. I hope most of you got a chance to see "Beijing Rocks". It was a really great and fun movie to work on. If you haven't seen it...shame on you! I know some of you may not have access to it, so I will forgive you but do see it when you get a chance!

In October I finished a movie called "Bin Lim Ging Ching" there is no english title yet. In this movie I was able to work with my friend Stephen Fung again. I played an assasin whose face was badly deformed who must revenge his brother's death.

This month I was able to go back to Taiwan to promote "Beijing Rocks". It was good to get a chance to go back to Taiwan! Thanks to everyone for coming to the autograph session. It was fun!

Right now I have just started work on another new movie called "Fung Hung Kei Yuen". This movie will also have Francis Ng and Michelle Reis/Lee. I am really excited to work with Francis on this project because he is one of my favorite actors. This ia also my first comedy so you will all get a chance to see my silly side.

I read some e-mails from some of you in Singapore complaining about me not showing up for the "Peony Pavillion" premiere. I would like to explain that there are a lot of places that I would like to go to do promotions BUT it is not always up to me personally. Sometimes there is no budget to fly the actors out or my schedule does not allow. In the case of the Singapore "Peony Pavillion" trip, I chose NOT to go because I was upset with the distribution of the film in Sinapore. Many of you may not know that the movie will not show in Singapore because the Singaporean distrubtors said that they do not think Chinese films are fit to be shown in their theatres. This statement upset me very much because in order for Hong Kong or Chinese film to survive, we need the support of everyone in the industry all over Asia. I felt that these people were being tremendously ignorant on their part. This is not the first time I've experienced difficulties with a movie in Singapore. So all of you in Singapore who want to see more good films, you have to fight for the right to choose instead of someone else choosing for you. I just wanted you to be aware of that.

I've also been getting a lot of mail asking me for advice on many things. About what to study in school, about getting into the entertainment business, etc. My one piece of advice, which also applies to myself is this: Do what you want to do. Do what will make you happy. Very simple statements that can make a world of difference. Don't be scared to try something different. Who knows? You may be very good at it! And if you don't succeed, your life is not over! You can try something else untill you are satisfied or happy. If you believe and trust in yourself you can make it happen!

OK, I must go. Hope everyone is well and look forward to hearing from you all!

    Daniel
