Just got back from yet another trip to New York. Besides sampling NY's awesome cuisine I made sure to go and check out the newly opened High Line Park. The High Line was originally an elevated train line that serviced the meatpacking district in NY. It was made to help alleviate street level delivery traffic on the west side of town. Unused since the 60's someone had the great idea it into a park instead of tearing it down. It was designed by landscape architects,   James Corner Field Operations and architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

It's a wonderful idea for a park. Because it is elevated off the ground it allows unique views of the city that you wouldn't normally get at ground level. Above is the entry at Gansevoort Street.

The High Line snakes through the west side going through buildings. You can still see the old rail tracks peeking through the plants in some parts.

The details are amazing, everything from the concrete to the rusted steel planter boxes are elegantly designed and well thought out. There are plenty of benches and chairs to sit and get away from the city while still being in the city. This nicely designed tanning bed actually sits on the old rail tracks and can be moved along the tracks just in case the guy next to you farts.

From the street, you can see the High Line snaking it's way up town peeking out from the buildings.

Above is an amphitheater like seating area with a giant picture window that looks out onto the street. This is probably my favorite design feature. If you are in NY you should definitely make some time to check this place out. I think cities around the world can learn a lot from this project in terms of how to creatively reuse architectural features that may no longer be useful. It's a perfect way to integrate the new with the old. Often times, city governments don't see the value in preservation so they just tear them down but when something is done right like the High Line, it can add vitality to the city. Thanks for sharing, I have not visited NYC for a bit. I read about this in TIME or one of those publications. But to see the actual photos (instead of artist drawings) is very cool. I am heading down next week from Boston. Got to check it out and "In the Heights" as well as some good Korean/Chinese food.

    还是继续期待四处绿树环抱的城市,这里貌似还差得远,噢~~ 设计到是很创意,很童话。

    好重的一座桥呀。我指的重就像很简单的一座城市,加了一笔深深的金属感。它没被拆是正确的。

    Hello Daniel,

    .....continue from my pervious mail,

We have just finished our short film shooting two days ago. There was a new and interesting experience for me. Even though we have to make ourselves (our bodies) dirty in the shooting, the location of shooting is also dirty and disgusting, but we are enjoyed the work.

Yeah...! I have achieved to make a good scene again, even though only about five seconds.

Actually I was quite upset that I was only appeared on the camera about 10 seconds in the 20 minutes short film, I was just playing a very very very small character, minor role in the shooting (I and some actors/actress look like a tool or prop to support the background of the film). But I still have to feel thankfulness and satisfied. The director, photographer and the crews like and appreciate my participation and contribution. It was good and "BEAUTIFUL", even only about 10 seconds. This is the kind of scene they are always looking for.

    Yours Truly,
    Chin Hon Vui.

    Hello Daniel,

    ......continue from my previous letter,

I have just done my first day short film shooting (as I told you before). We choose an old, ragged and  abandoned house to be the shooting location. There are so dirty inside and outside the house. A lot of rubbish, sometimes can see the rats walking around. All of us (the prisoners, included me) crowded at the corner of a room. Some of them crouch or squat, some of them  recline or lie down on the floor, I am the one have do this position (shirtless). The room is full of [URINE, EXCREMENT, VOMIT, BLOOD AND RUBBISH]. Of course, there are FAKE. I and other prisoners crouch or lie down at this disgusting place for about one and half hour.  Even though this scene is just only about five minutes.

As I told you before, my part where the time  I appear on the camera is only  about five seconds together (crowded) with about 25 person) at the corner of the room . It made me upset. In the beginning, I want to give up, just simply act it. But later, I decided to persist and persevere this kind of situation. I have to tfight for it. This few seconds is my only opportunity, (Actually, I act a prisoner who got serious illness, and then vomiting). I want to do my best.

After the few seconds of this shooting, the director shouted "BEAUTIFUL", and the crews clapped their hands. I am glad about it, but later I still upset because of the time of my scene is too short.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Chin Hon Vui.

    Hello Daniel,

Hi, me again. I have just came back from the rehearsal for the short film shooting where I have told you before. Thepart of my scene is less that two minutes, and I will only appear on the camera for few seconds, on my rear and back side, together with about about 25 person (the prisoners), and all of us crowded at the corner of a room.

I try to ask myself don't be upset. Just like you ,Daniel Wu has said that  ["Life is a struggle and things do not always go our way but that is what we enjoy about life. The most important thing is to never give up. It's not important to be "number 1" or "the best" for others but it is very important to be the best for ourself."]

    Yours Sincerely,
    Chin Hon Vui.

    Hello Daniel,

I would like to share something  with you here. That is my new experience in my life.

About two weeks ago, a friend called me that her friend (who was working in the art line) is going to do a (about 20 minutes) short and simple video shooting for his project. It is not for commercial,  just a nonprofit short video shooting. It will be used for demostration in Japan. It is talking about the second world war in Malaysia, how were the people mistreated, abused and executed by the Japanese.

He is recruiting and needs a group of actor / actress for his shooting. I have struggled for many days, but then (today) I decided to paticipate in the shooting. Actually, the recruitment has already closed. Luckly they still need the character like me, because of my skinny body size.

In the shooting I will only play a very very small character, a supporting / minor role, only few minutes shooting with many people. But doesn't matter, it will be a new experience for me. I will be a prisoner (one of about 17 prisoners) who are going to be executed, how was their life in the prison.

The shooting will be started on this weekend, only few days shooting.

    Yours Sincerly,
    Chin Hon Vui.

    Hello Daniel,

I would like to share you somethings about my life. Most of the things in my life are not going well......

But... it may not a suitable and correct way to share those things here. But this is the only way I have found where can reach you.

You had said that you've  been getting a lot of mail asking you for advice on many things. About what to study in school, about getting into the entertainment business, etc. Your one piece of advice, which also applies to yourself is this:
["Do what we want to do. Do what will make us happy. Very simple statements that can make a world of difference. Don't be scared to try something different. Who knows? We may be very good at it! And if we don't succeed, our life is not over! We can try something else untill we are satisfied or happy. If we believe and trust in ourself we can make it happen!"]

But I am worse than this. I totally "GET LOST". I don't know what do I want.

Before that I had changed two colleges after my secondary school, but I did not completed the studies because I cannot handle them, may be I am not a clever person. In this period, I have wasted my 3 years life.

And then I had nothing to do, stayed at home for many months.

Then I went to get the job. Since these 10++ years, I have changed many kind of jobs, ...resigned, ...unemployment, ...looking for other job, ...and repeat those things everytime.

Recently, something is not going well. My manager of my job has found that I have got some "STAIN" or "TAINT" in my life. In the past half year, our relation was become very bad. I was so upset, unhappy, afraid in this period. I was "attacked" and insulted all the time. Then I was asked ("forced") to resign. Just about two months ago. Now I am become unemployment again.

...I am a failure, ...and so useless.

Daniel, sorry that I write those things and put them in your blog, (Here is a public place. This place is opened to everybody.) So, I really hope that it will not disturb your BLOG or bother you. Of course, I would like to write and share those things to you personally, but I can't find other way to reach you directly.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Chin Hon Vui.
