  • Save the Date: April 13th, 2036...

    Friday, Jan 30, 2009 4:42AM / Members only

    It's a bird! It's a plane! No it's, it's, uh-oh! Kaboom!

The other morning I was channel surfing on my Slingbox.  I watched an interesting interview between Leno and astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson.  So I did some more research on what he was talking about.  This is what I found.

Let me start from the beginning....literally.  You see in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.  The heavens in this case is a generically vague term for everything else floating in space and the universe that's not the Earth.  Well about 5 years ago one of these floating objects, otherwise known as a meteor (named Apophis), was discovered.  Not that big of a deal because there are millions of asteroids and meteors in our solar system and to discover a new one doesn't seem so novel right? Wrong!  After Apophis' discovery, astrophysicists using calculations and supercomputers (a bit more powerful than my TI-84) came to the conclusion that on April 13th, 2036 it has a strong chance of hitting Earth somewhere between  Las Vegas and off the Southern California coast.  Keep in mind that Apophis, aptly named after the Egyptian demon god of darkness and chaos, is neither nearly as big as the one that took out the dinosaurs, nor the one that took out Bruce Willis in 1998.

It's only about 248 meters in radius, but still forceful enough to wipe out a city or two.  If you don't believe me you can look it up yourself or you can wait til April of 2029 when Apophis does a nice little fly-by, buzzing our collective towers a mere 500 miles from Earth.  It's not until 7 years later that it actually hits Earth.  What's my point in all of this?  Well firstly, stay away from L.A. or Vegas in 2036, secondly I'll be 59 years old by the time it hits.  That seems like a long time.  So hopefully by then we'll have a plan ready and we won't have to recruit some maverick oil-drillers to nuke the damn thing seconds from reaching zero-barrier (my last Armageddon reference I promise).

I have an idea, how about Survivor: Apophis.  We send up 10 contestants and make them compete to get off the asteroid.  The last one has to stay and press the nuke button to blow themselves and the rock into smithereens.  Cruel? Perhaps, but that's a reality show I'd watch.  Well that's all for now.  Oh yeah, Happy Chinese New Year!
  • My trip home...

    Saturday, Oct 11, 2008 1:59PM / Members only

Since I moved to Hong Kong in January of '07, I've only returned to the States once for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  This year I moved my trip up a couple months so I can spend the lovely holidays with all my peeps in Hong Kong.  So last week I flew to California to surprise my sister and my nieces in SoCal.
As you can tell my 5 yr old niece, Isabella, was happy to have Uncle Damon around.

So were the 3 year old twins Alexandra and Sophia.  Don't ask me which one is which. I mean for God sakes they're identical!  If constantly asking "Hey, which one are you?" makes me a bad uncle, then fine I'm a bad uncle.  At least I bought them presents, even a little taste of Asia:
That's right! It's a Hello Kitty puzzle...and they did it all by themselves (Seriously, no clue who's who.)

Then I flew all the way across the country to my home in Miami, Florida.  I had one mission, to watch some football.  So on Saturday I went with my dad to see the Univ. of Miami Hurricanes (Orange) host the Florida State Seminoles (White).  Not only was the game great (even the 'Noles beat the 'Canes 41-39) but I had a great time.

Not feeling satisfied, I returned to Dolphins Stadium the next day to watch the Miami Dolphins host the San Diego Chargers.

Despite the rain, my friends (me, Chris, Alex, and JR) and I had a great time as the Dolphins beat the Chargers 17-10!

Not only does being home allow me some time to spend with family and friends, it also let's me do new and fun things.  Like ride around my parents neighborhood on my dad's new toy...his blue scooter.  I decided to take the Blue Angel out for a lil' joy ride!
About 2 blocks from my house I saw this 4 foot long iguana just getting some sun.

The end of the street brought a nice place to park the Blue Angel and just enjoy the afternoon breeze off the Atlantic.

Well so far my trip has been relaxing and rewarding.  Take care everyone, and holla atcha later. Peace!

  • Steve Carell is a Genius!

I'm very excited that season 5 of the U.S. version of  "The Office" debuts next week.  If you are unaware of his work, I invite you to crawl out from the cave you currently live in and enjoy his true genius.  He first made a name for himself as a member of the famed Second City improv-comedy troupe.  From there he was a cast member of the short lived, but hilarious "Dana Carvey Show" and most notably as a correspondent on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart".  Before he starred in blockbuster films "The 40 Year Old Virgin", "Evan Almighty", and "Dan In Real Life", he became a cult icon in frat houses everywhere with his role as Brick Tamland, the dimwitted weatherman, in Will Ferrell's "Anchorman".  Here's the proof (1:58 is my favorite):
