  • Beijing band wins China Global Battle of the Bands!

    Tuesday, Nov 23, 2010 11:25AM / Standard Entry

A Frenchman, a Dutchman and a Chinese man walk into the Global Battle of the Bands in China and win the China Final beating eighty-one other bands.  No it’s not a joke, it’s actually what happened on 21st November in Hong Kong at Sticky Fingers, a premier live music venue.  After flying down courtesy of Dragonair, ”The Amazing Insurance Salesmen” a Beijing based band competed against the winning bands from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau and surprised the panel of eleven music industry judges with their musicianship.  One judge actually wrote, “Best GBOB band I’ve ever heard”.

It’s the second year in a row for Beijing, whose winner last year (the flamboyant “Rustic”) went on to win the World GBOB Final in 2009.  The question is, can China do a repeat and win again for 2010?

On 26 February 2011, we will find out.  On that night, China will battle out against 16 other countries in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to see if China can again win US$100,000 in band development (this prize includes: 1 week in a top London recording studio with a producer, a 10 date United Kingdom tour and 10,000 USD in cash).

In GBOB, each band performs 8 minutes of original music with styles ranging from alternative pop to metal rock.   Global Battle of the Bands was formed in 2004 and the China division created in 2008.

  • Will China produce another world winner this year?

    Thursday, Nov 11, 2010 8:23PM / Press Release

The Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) has been taking place in China since the beginning of September 2010. This year over 100 bands signed up and participated in what must be the biggest band competition in the world.

According to GBOB rules, each participating band performs eight minutes of original music with any genre accepted with the only rule being no prerecorded music allowed during the performance.

This year four cities have taken part in China; Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen.  Unfortunately the authorities shut down Guangzhou due to the Asian Games and Shanghai didn’t happen because of the venue canceling the event.

On 21st November 2010, the biggest and final event of GBOB China 2010 will take place with these four cities winning bands competing for two prizes.  The first prize being the free flights & accommodation to attend the World Final of GBOB which takes place in Kuala Lumpur in February 2010 and the second prize is a confirmed performance slot at Zebra Music Festival in May 2011 (with free flights & accommodation).

The four competing bands are “The Amazing Insurance Salesmen” from Beijing who play experimental fusion music, “Senseless” from Hong Kong who play energetic Cantonese rock, “Crossline” from Macau who play Cantonese pop and “Bolt Action” from Shenzhen who play hard rock.

This year the China Final will again comprise judges from music industry insiders and the overall winning band is determined from judges votes only.

Dragonair is the official carrier for GBOB China and Hotel Novotel Hong Kong Century is the official Hotel Sponsor of GBOB China 2010.

Last year’s China winners “Rustic” from Beijing surprised everyone by winning the World Final beating competing bands from 20 other nations (including Canada, Japan, Australia and smaller nations such as Faroe Islands).  It was the first time an Asian country had won the title.  Rustic won US$100,000 in band development and will be touring UK in summer of 2011.  Rustic will be the special guests at the China Final on 21st November 2010 at Sticky Fingers in Tsim Sha Tsui.

  • Senseless wins the HK Final of GBOB 2010

    Monday, Nov 8, 2010 4:02PM / Press Release

In 2010, over 50 bands entered the Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) in Hong Kong.  Each band were hoping that they would be the one who would bring home a Gibson Les Paul junior guitar, HK$5000 Tom Lee Music vouchers and the honour of representing Hong Kong in the China Final.   After hosting seven preliminary heats, there were nine bands left to battle it out at the Hong Kong Final at HYDE in Lyndhurst Terrace, Central last Friday.

According to GBOB rules, each band plays two original songs within eight minutes and the Hong Kong Final audience were treated to a wonderful variety of styles all sounding superb and the judges were left wondering “How can we judge when practically all of the bands merited a gold star?”.  The panel of 10 judges comprised music industry representatives from Warner Music, Schtung Music, Drum Jam, Gibson guitars, along with media partners BusinessWire, BC Magazine and local celebrities Christine Samson, Ryan Hui and Ginger Kwan plus a representative from Hotreels Films.

In the end, the whole venue went silent as everyone waited for the announcement, and then there was a huge cheer & roar & yells of yes from the audience as Senseless were crowned the best band in Hong Kong for 2010.

Senseless play a blend of energetic Canto-power-pop-punk, and these five Hong Kong lads are now one step closer to winning a slot at the Zebra Music Festival in Chengdu in May 2011 as well as the chance to represent China in the World Final of GBOB in Malaysia where they stand to win US$100,000 in band development.

In second place at the HK Final, were power pop rap rockers F.B.I. (they have won second place in GBOB HK two years in a row) and in third place were monster thrash band Misery.

The GBOB China 2010 Final is happening on Sunday 21st November 2010, right here in Hong Kong, where Senseless will compete against three other China cities: Crossline (Macau), The Amazing Insurance Salesmen (Beijing), and Bolt Action (Shenzhen).   (Unfortunately Guangzhou event was cancelled because of the Asian Games and Shanghai event was cancelled by the Shanghai venue).  The special guest at China Final will be Rustic (from Beijing) who won the GBOB World competition in 2009.

Global Battle of the Bands was formed in 2004 and the China division created in 2008. Over 20 countries are taking part in 2010. The World Final for GBOB 2010 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 26th February 2011.   At the World Final, the overall winner will receive US$100,000 in band development (US$10,000 cash, UK tour & 1 week recording in a top London studio).

    Senseless:

    F.B.I. (1st runner up)

    Misery (2nd Runner up)

  • Hong Kong Final 2010 - Friday 5 Nov @ HYDE

    Tuesday, Oct 26, 2010 9:46PM / Event

    Who will emerge victorious?

Over 50 bands entered the 2010 Global Battle of the Bands in Hong Kong and competition has been fierce - rumours of bass guitars at 20 paces and drummers clashing symbols are just part of Hong Kong's competitive nature -
but friendly. New bands and talented musicians have emerged while old favourites have upped their acts as the quality of performance and original songs gets white hot in the heats of GBOB.

So who will be the last band standing? Who will carry Hong Kong's flag over the barricades into the world final, and we hope onto global superstardom...?

The winning Hong Kong band will walk away with a Les Paul Gibson junior guitar, HK$5000 Tom Lee Vouchers and a guest appearance on The Underground compilation CD4 as well as the opportunity to represent Hong Kong in the China Final on 21 November 2010.

Each band performs two original songs within 8 minutes and the changeover is quick so its fast paced competition all the way.

    Hong Kong GBOB Finalists:

9 Maps (classic rock & classical in acoustic indie sauce)

    F.B.I. (explosive high-energy rock)

    Misery (Thrash inspired ‘monster-rock’)

    OperatoR (classic rock revisited)
Senseless (Energetic power pop and Canto punk)
Summer Junkiez (indie-rock with hints of ska)

The Bonkers (Indie-rock with shoegaze overtones)
& the winning band(s) from Heat 7 (happening on 29 Oct)

  • Bolt Action Wins Shenzhen Global Battle Of The Bands 2010!

    Friday, Oct 22, 2010 11:37AM / News

Saturday nights will never be the same again in Shenzhen.

It could almost have been called the “Battle of the Housebands” as T.A.S. , Mind the Gap and Bolt Action, along with 2 more local Shenzhen bands competed to get that one step closer to winning the Global Prize of US$100,000 in band development!

Host venue Enigma (located in Shekou) was packed with live music lovers who were keen to vote for their favourite Shenzhen band. The five bands had music styles ranging from screamo to funk to rock. The judges (comprised from music & media industry), did not have an easy decision on whom to choose. At the Shenzhen Final, the audience votes counted for 25%.

In GBOB, each band performs 8 minutes of original music with any genre accepted. The judges were impressed with “Bolt Action” and one judge simply put “Wow!” as his comments.

Bolt Action will represent Shenzhen in the China Final on 21st November and compete against the winning bands from Beijing, Shanghai, Macau, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The overall China winner will receive TWO prizes this year, the first being the free flights & accommodation to attend the World Final of GBOB in February 2010 and the second is a performance slot at Zebra Music Festival in May 2011 (with free flights & accommodation).

Global Battle of the Bands was formed in 2004 and the China division created in 2008. Over 20 countries are taking part in 2010. The World Final for GBOB 2010 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 26th February 2010.
