In 2010,
over 50 bands entered the Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) in Hong Kong. Each
band were hoping that they would be the one who would bring home a Gibson Les
Paul junior guitar, HK$5000 Tom Lee Music vouchers and the honour of
representing Hong Kong in the China Final.
After hosting seven preliminary heats,
there were nine bands left to battle it out at the Hong Kong Final at HYDE in
Lyndhurst Terrace, Central last Friday.
According
to GBOB rules, each band plays two original songs within eight minutes and the Hong
Kong Final audience were treated to a wonderful variety of styles all sounding superb
and the judges were left wondering “How can we judge when practically all of
the bands merited a gold star?”. The
panel of 10 judges comprised music industry representatives from Warner Music,
Schtung Music, Drum Jam, Gibson guitars, along with media partners BusinessWire, BC
Magazine and local celebrities Christine Samson, Ryan Hui and Ginger Kwan plus a
representative from Hotreels Films.
In the end,
the whole venue went silent as everyone waited for the announcement, and then there
was a huge cheer & roar & yells of yes from the audience as Senseless
were crowned the best band in Hong Kong for
2010.
Senseless
play a blend of energetic Canto-power-pop-punk, and these five Hong Kong lads
are now one step closer to winning a slot at the Zebra Music Festival in Chengdu in May 2011 as well as the chance to represent China in the World Final of GBOB in Malaysia where
they stand to win US$100,000 in band development.
In second
place at the HK Final, were power pop rap rockers F.B.I. (they have won second
place in GBOB HK two years in a row) and in third place were monster thrash
band Misery.
The GBOB China
2010 Final is happening on Sunday 21st November 2010, right here in
Hong Kong, where Senseless will compete against three other China cities: Crossline (Macau), The Amazing
Insurance Salesmen (Beijing),
and Bolt Action (Shenzhen). (Unfortunately Guangzhou
event was cancelled because of the Asian Games and Shanghai
event was cancelled by the Shanghai
venue). The special guest at China
Final will be Rustic (from Beijing)
who won the GBOB World competition in 2009.
Global Battle
of the Bands was formed in 2004
and the China
division created in 2008. Over 20 countries are taking part in 2010. The World
Final for GBOB 2010 will be held in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia
on 26th February
2011. At the World
Final, the overall winner will receive US$100,000 in band development
