    True Life with DJ Shy

Karen (aka DJ Shy) loves her boyfriend Mickey, sometimes. But when alcohol is involved, a monster seems to take his place. His moods swing from super sweet to completely offensive and you don’t know which personality shows up. DJ Shy struggles to handle Mickey’s Jekyll and Hyde behavīor that threatens to jeopardize both their relationship and her career. Can they get past their issues to make these relationships work?

    True Life with DJ Shy

True Life Check-In with Karen (spoiler alert)
How has her life changed since filming wrapped

Have you heard from Mickey? If so, how did it go?
Yes, Mickey would text and call sporadically. I usually ignore him, but he would always say something to get a response from me. I’m not sure of his motive for contacting me, but I did let him know that I’m happier now, and wish him well.

How will your relationship with Mickey affect your future relationships? Did dating Mickey help you solidify what you want and don’t want in a boyfriend?
I know what I don’t want in a relationship. I don’t want to date a guy who drinks, smokes or does drugs. It’s a definite red flag.

How is your relationship with your new manager? Are you happy you found new management?
Bucky is great. He is very professional and looks out for my best interest.

How has it affected your career?
It feels like a heavy weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I can now focus on work without stress or liability of having to worry about another person and how he reflects on me.

What was it like sharing your story with us?
Sharing my story was a bit of a roller coaster ride. There were good times as well as lots of bad times, but it was definitely thrilling. The show made me realize there needs to be stability in my life, and I’m glad I was able to walk away without any regrets.

Asian Girlz by Day Above Ground (Racist)

Once the song Asian Girlz by Day Above Ground hit YouTube it quickly got ripped a new one along with model Levy Tran, who is featured in the video. Facebook, blogs, and media outlets lit up with commentary about the controversial video. The unquestionably racist and misogynist video is packed with basic stereotypes exoticizing and fetishizing Asian women. The degrading lyrics hyper-sexualizes Asian and Asian-American women and uses racist epithets throughout the song. The video also promotes sexual violence with its lyrics and even alludes to sex with minors. The controversy has driven YouTube views for the video to over 250k with 17k dislikes. (These are not the numbers you want on YouTube.) And spurred a petition to drop the band from an upcoming “House of Blues” that has reached over 1000 signatures. (see here.)

With PR and damage control needed, both the band “Day Above Ground” and model Levy Tran issued statements about the video.

From Day Above Ground on YouTube:
“We appreciate all the criticism and support. Our song “Asian Girlz” was not written with any malicious, hateful, or hurtful intent. We know it is racy and does push the boundaries further than other songs out there. Understand that we do not promote or support racism or violence. We love everyone no matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation. Please respect our decision to delete any violent, insensitive, or hurtful comment and also one that supports racism. We hope that we can continue with our lives with much love and peace.”

Previously, Day Above Ground had this on YouTube:
“This song is us, Day Above Ground, making fun of ourselves (and many, many other guys) obsession with the always lovely, Asian Woman. It pushes this concept to an absurd level, but at the same time is endearing & submissive.. WE ARE NOT RACIST, HAHA! I mean, look at our band, it’s multicultural!! The guy in the bow-tie, our cutie bass player, was born in Indonesia, and he steals the show!! Please don’t take this tongue-in-cheek tribute to some of the most gorgeous women on the planet too seriously!! You’ll ruin the fun of it all!! Thanks for watching, sincerely!!”

    From Levy Tran on Twitter

    Levy Tran on Instagram

To anyone who is willing to listen: I am truly and deeply sorry for my actions pertaining to the video. I meant no disrespect and it was not my intention to offend anyone. And being an adult, I accept full responsibility. And to all those whom I have let down, I am so so sorry.

It’s been several days already, but the video is still not down. The controversy from the video will continue as long as this video is up and no doubt both Day Above Ground and Levy Tran are already facing ramifications for their parts in this video. Below is the video and lyrics from the song. What are your thought on this controversy?

Asian Girlz by Day Above Ground (Racist)

Lyrics to Asian Girlz by Day Above Ground

    So baby marry me
Come on sit on my lap (right here baby)
    Or we’ll send you back
    And you age so well
    I can barely tell
    17 or 23?
    Baby doesn’t matter to me

Into the Well by Mree (aka Marie Hsiao)

Singer Mree (aka Marie Hsiao) released the music video “Into the Well” off her upcoming Winterwell album. She takes you into an underwater world and maze of yarn with her heavenly voice. Memories and reality blur together. Bleeding borders run with colors seen before my time. Mree is definitely maturing and growing as an artist. You can get the single “Into the Well” on Into the Well - Into the Well - Single or amazon.

Into the Well by Mree (aka Marie Hsiao)

Lyrics to Into the Well by Mree

All along I felt a longing to find
    the lighthouse but I found
    a home through a lens
    in the water
    drawn from the well
    I fell into

I know that I’ve been sleeping
and I know that I’ve been dreaming
But now the sun is streaming
and I swear that I’ve been here before

Not just the act of being
    Caught somewhere in between
I just can’t fight this feeling
I swear that I’ve been here before

    Are they mine?
These memories reside inside my mind

    Bleeding borders
Run with colors seen before my time

I know that I’ve been sleeping
and I know that I’ve been dreaming
But now the sun is streaming
and I swear that I’ve been here before

Not just the act of being
    Caught somewhere in between
I just can’t fight this feeling
I swear that I’ve been here before

    Daydreamer by Karen David

Singer/actress Karen David released her music video for “Daydreamer” off her upcoming Dust to Stars EP. On the upbeat single, the singer states “The track is really a fun, summer song and I had a great time filming the video. It’s definitely a feel good track for everyone to enjoy. The reaction so far has been great and I’m looking forward to performing it.” With timed choreography, the video offers a playful Karen David on stage as prop people float various props in and out with red balloons, a pinata guitar, and mobile skyscraper flats. The songs on her new EP are all inspired by her experiences of playing Kayla Graham on ‘Touch’. Look for the EP to drop in a few weeks.
