Last night was the Martial Arts Benefit for Quake Victims, which was put together by the Tiger Claw Foundation and held at the Santa Clara Convention Center. We were invited to perform along with a number of schools from around the Bay Area. Each of us, therefore, were only given about a 5-minute time slot. As it was a fundraiser, performers were also asked to pay the $20 admission fee.

According to the Consulate General, the Bay Area has raised $1.34 million so far

Since food was not going to be provided, Aya and I stopped by Japantown in San Jose beforehand for dinner, as it's been a few years since I've been there and I was craving Minato rolls (spicy tuna rolls w/secret sauce). Luckily, it wasn't too crowded when we got there, so we got a table fairly quickly. We got two orders of Minato rolls and split an order of their world famous teriyaki spareribs. *drool*

My palate has never been so happy

When we arrived at the venue, there was a huge line of people waiting to purchase tickets and already a big crowd seated inside. The event started late and we didn't go on until around 10 PM. Enjoyed watching the other performances, but thought it was inappropriate when the capoeira group was chanting "Free Tibet!" after theirs. I'm going to try and put a video together from all the footage I took.

2,000+ people in attendance, $55,000 raised

That's a fantastic amount of money for this fundraiser!  It's so great that you were a part of this!

Too bad about the inappropriate behavior during the performance.....doesn't really bode well with Dalai Lama's messages, does it?

It would have been fun...but the kids wouldn't have made it through. That Tibet chant...not appropriate.

This was a good event to have in Silicon Valley. Get the moneybags out of the suburbs.

Minato Sushi. Went on many dates there. The guys like to go there bc the waitresses wear shorts. haha. Cheap thrill! It's not like the girls are all attractive.

It's hard to comprehend the death toll & suffering resulting from a tragedy like this. I was happy there was an way to participate in the relief efforts thru Jet's foundation, it must have been really great to contribute thru the wushu you guys have worked so hard on.

I agree it wasn't the right time for the chant, which I've come to dread because I have such a bad feeling about what's gonna happen at the Olympics this summer. I think it's going to be a setback between relations between the US & China, and might even cause the efforts to bring about changes in Tibet to be undermined, because protests will be a huge insult to the efforts China has made to host the Olympics.

But there are many who would say anytime is a right time to protest suffering. It just gives me a heavy heart to think about it. Things simply don't work the same way in China that they do here & I wonder what the results of these protests will actually be on the Chinese government & people.

Oh Wow, what a wonderful amount raised, and it looked a good event, just a shame that the capoeira had to mention 'free Tibet' at a more than inappropriate event.
