  • So you think you're Asian...

    Saturday, Jul 14, 2007 12:38AM / Members only

Have you ever wondered if you're truly Asian?  Sure, we all have - and I have to admit, I've had more doubts than most.  But my advice is to trust your gut.  All of my friends are Korean except for my girlfriend who's Taiwanese and speaks Mandarin.  They can't understand each other, and I can't understand any of them.  In fact, I haven't been able to understand a word they've said to me for nearly two years no matter how drunk I get (which turned out to be quite a relief since I can't stand alcohol).  All this leads me to believe that I was right all along, and I could not be less Asian.  So my advice is to look deep inside your heart and be honest with yourself about who and what you see.  The truth is in there; trust your gut - it's probably right.
  • Somebody stop me!

    Friday, Jul 13, 2007 10:33PM / Members only

I keep hearing songs that say something like, "They can't stop us...," or "Nothing's gonna stop us...," etc., and all I can think is, "Is someone or something out there literally trying to stop us?"  Who?  From what?  Why would anybody want to stop us?  I mean, I'm a decent guy and you're probably pretty cool, so what's the deal?  I'll tell you this much, if such a person exists, I think his or her behavīor is completely unacceptable, and if I catch him, he's going to wish I hadn't.  If you feel the same way, please join me in saying, "Enough's enough," and no matter what anyone else says, "Nothing's gonna stop us!"
  • Let's make a deal...

There's a saying, "You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate for."  But what happens if, after negotiating, you end up with less than you deserve?  That's what I'm currently trying to avoid.  See, three years after a failed bid to take over my consulting firm, I'm back at it again, trying to negotiate my way to the top.  This time it should be much easier though, as I am no longer weighed down by such things as a wife, a gigantic house on a pond, and my life savings.  Indeed, I'm traveling much lighter these days, so I'm much faster on my feet - which is a good thing when you're in intense negotiations.  How intense?  Real intense.  In fact, things have gotten so testy lately that discussions between my business partner (the firm's majority owner) and me have temporarily broken down.  What went wrong?  I'm not sure, but they started heading south about the time I casually mentioned that, if worse comes to worst, I could just beat him up and take the firm if I really wanted to - which is totally true because I'm pretty ripped.  Anyway, he gave me the same look my pastor did at Christmas when I told him his wife was a "sexy little dish" (only I didn't say dish).  So, here I am, planning my next move... I'll keep you posted.
  • A long time ago...

    Friday, Jul 13, 2007 5:04AM / Members only

A long time ago, my dearest mentor once told me that the first thing you should do whenever you meet anyone is ask yourself, "How can I be a blessing to this person?"  And that has made all the difference in my life.  Well, honestly, I can't remember if those were her exact words, but you get the gist.  It was a long time ago, what do you want from me?  No, seriously... and I suppose your memory is perfect?  Get over yourself.  Look, I don't need your attitude... and you better wipe that look off your face...
