  • Ruby Slippers

    Thursday, Aug 7, 2008 6:20AM / Members only

    I felt like I was having a bit of a Dorothy in ruby slippers moment while trying on these shoes earlier today.  I have a certain affection for red shoes.  I own 5 pairs currently.  It goes back to childhood.  I blogged a little previously about my fixation here.  I found these to be quite fetching and like that they have a slightly retro vibe but in all practicality this style just doesn't really work for me in this color as pretty as it is.  These shoes could easily go with almost all of my dresses if I got them in black but they didn't have them in my size.  Metallic would also be good cause that's neutral in my book. I'll have to look for them when I'm uptown this weekend.  Incidentally this is not a good angle to photograph your legs and feet from. I look like I have cankles.
  • Music for a Monday

    Tuesday, Aug 5, 2008 5:06AM / Members only

    I don't know if this happens with anyone else but I go through these periods where I just like to listen to certain songs over and over again.  These have been getting alot of play on my iTunes recently.  They're all pretty different but the emotions in each resonate quite strongly for me.  So what's everyone else been listening to lately?
    Sweet Song :: Blur
    Blur is one of my favorite bands ever and they're probably the band that I've seen live the most as well.  This has nothing to do with the crush on lead singer Damon Albarn my girl friends and I shared at one point of course.  This song was on their 2003 release Think Tank which I don't have.  I'd heard a couple of songs and didn't get into it.  Sadly this wasn't one of them.  I just discovered this song recently via super Korean drama "Coffee Prince".  If it weren't for Korean dramas, I probably wouldn't have much new music these days.  I think this could be my favorite Blur song of all.
    安静 :: 周杰伦  (Peaceful :: Jay Chou)
    An oldie sort of and such a goodie.  This was one of the first songs I heard that got me into Chinese music again.  Jay Chou is a total megastar now but he was just 22  and already earning high praise when this song was released on his sophomoric album Fantasy.  I was really impressed with the beauty and depth of this tune and the fact that he composed, performed and produced it all himself.  Yes he's a bit of mumbler but  it works for him and I love singing along to his songs especially this one.

    Flower Pot
    :: Loveholic
    I don't understand a word of what they're singing sometimes but I've been loving Korean band Loveholic for awhile now.  Their songs are quite often featured in Korean dramas.  I can see why as they're usually pretty wonderful.  This one was in "Coffee Prince" too.  Someone translated the lyrics into English in this video and all I can say is Wow!  Ji Sun's vocals are lovely here as always.

    I'll Fall With Your Knife
    :: Peter Murphy
    Despite the title this is a love song or so I'm told by my husband who first turned me onto it.  But then Peter Murphy did get married in a crypt so this would be his version of a love song.  This one was on an album called Cascade, one of his solo releases post Bauhaus.
    When you think your chance is passing by
    When you blow your moon away
    I'll bleed like the reed
    Fall with your knife
    It's here I'll be with you
  • Restaurant Week

    Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 4:43AM / Members only

    Summer Restaurant Week is here.  This makes fine dining  available at reasonable prices in NYC.  $24.07 for a three-course prix-fixe lunch and $35.00 for dinner.  Mr. B and I hit up 2 places for lunch this time around.  First up was Morimoto which is located just west of the Chelsea Market. It is owned and named for Japanese Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto.  We also went to Perry St  which overlooks  the Hudson River in the West Village and is one of many restaurants owned by famed chef and restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten.  The food was good at both places but the choices at Perry St. were broader and more varied so I would say the value was a bit better there.  Photos of the food below so be warned if you happen to be hungry or haven't eaten yet.  Restaurant Week runs through this Friday 8/1.

    mixed greens with kabosu vinaigrette

    angry chicken (chicken with indian spices)

    sushi selection

    dessert

    amuse bouche - cucumber lime soup

    arctic char sashimi: lemon, olive oil and crispy skin

    house made mozzarella: sun dried pineapple and thai basil

    grilled hanger steak: herbal spinach and liquid gruyere

    red snapper poached in chili oil, radish salad

    chocolate pudding: fresh cream, crystallized violets

    passion fruit creme fraiche & meringue

  • Staten Island

    Thursday, Jul 24, 2008 10:21AM / Members only

    Mr. B and I went to see some live baseball this past weekend.  No, not our favorite New York Yankees but the Staten Island Yankees who happen to be the Single A affiliate of the Yankees.  Single A is the first level of the minor leagues that players usually play at when they sign with a Major League team.  The Yankees are also known as the Bronx Bombers and the S.I. team have been dubbed the Baby Bombers.  It was a pretty big game as they happened to be playing the Brooklyn Cyclones who are the Single A affiliate of the  cross-town rival New York Mets.

    The easiest way to get Staten Island is probably via the Staten Island Ferry.  The station itself is kind of interesting from a graphic standpoint.  I like the big letters on the sign outside. There's a walkway behind them if you want to get close.  It's also kind of a gross station cause pigeons fly inside and around it.  That always freaks me out since I'm so not fond of pigeons.  The ride itself is probably about 15 minutes.  It's not bad when the weather is nice and fairly scenic too.
    Inside the station

    Leaving downtown Manhattan

    The Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges
    A view of one of artist Olafur Eliasson’s New York City Waterfalls. For 110 days,
    these installations will pump 35,000 gallons of water per minute up and over
    four man-made towers, including one taller than the Statue of Liberty.
    The sun shining down on the Statue of Liberty
    The S.I. Yankees at bat in the first inning.
    We had pretty good seats by home plate. This was our view of the game.

    A view of the park from higher up

    Even though we attended a night game it was still pretty unbearably hot cause of the humidity.  We ended up leaving during the 7th inning stretch when the Baby Bombers were down by a score of 4 - 1.  We were happy to learn that they came back to win it in the bottom of the 9th by a final score of 4 - 5.  Go Yankees!  In case anyone is wondering, I took these photos with my point & shoot.  I'll be trying to catch up on my feeds in the next couple of days.  Haven't been on much this week since Mr. B has been off from work and we've been chilling.

    I think it's about time that Boston trade Manny Ramirez especially to the Dodgers. Aren't they dancing around that for awhile now? I'm starting my East Coast travels late of Aug but I'm expected to be in NYC a lot during Sept. Can't wait to see my lovable city and all the wonderful friends...yes you too sis...Meanwhile, please take more pics of the city for me now that you got that cool cam going....

    oh I know Gorillaz but I didn't know he was behind them. That's very true what you say about Oasis, they never really did develop their music any further. My brother who was a teen when they came out still thinks they are comparable to the Beatles (fame wise) I didn't think so then (being older and wiser (JK)) and time has shown that they are not in the same league.

    thanks Butter =)

    I gave notice today and just feel ill about it but I still think it is the right thing to do. We only have our kids for a few precious years and I literally only have a few left. K doesn't dwell on it but I know she is miserable.

    hello! thanks for the kind comments. =)

    That actually is in real time speed as its tape, and yea, we have the option to speed up, but if I ever do, only a teeny bit. Thats why we work really hard to push actual speed so its believable looking and not cheated. =D

    I visited New York about 2 1/2 weeks ago around July 16th - 17th.

    Thanks again for stopping by! =D
