  • Big Party in NYC

    Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 12:53AM / Members only

So I know I haven't blogged since the World Series started.  I was pretty caught up in the games and also didn't want to jinx my team by talking about them too much.  The Yankees claimed their 27th World Championship title by taking a 7-3 victory against the Phillies a week ago so I'm back.  They had a terrific season and capped it off in the best way possible. I was a little nervous about the Phillies cause they're a really good team. I can only say that they played well but the Yankees played better.  Maybe Jimmy Rollins should've put his bat where his mouth was when he made his predictions and Charlie Manuel probably shouldn't have referred to Andy Pettitte as an older pitcher with diminished stuff when he somehow found a way to beat them twice. The Yankees answered them by just playing and winning.  Last Friday the city celebrated with a ticker tape parade up the Canyon of Heroes in lower Manhattan followed by a City Hall ceremony presenting the team with keys to the city.  It was a crisp fall day and over a million people showed up.  NYC and the Yankees know how to throw a rockin' party!  The energy was incredible and it was great to see my city come together to cheer my favorite team.  The parade started at 11AM but when I met with my friends at 8AM the crowds were already gathering. I was pressed up against this bus stop for a few hours and my left tricep hurt for 2 days after but I'm not complaining.  My friend Wanda was awesome.  She kept propelling us forward and even found a box for me to stand on for better viewing and picture taking.

People stretched out all the way from Broadway to Church St.

I think he realized the view wasn't all that great when he got up there
Perennial Yankee fan Spike Lee milled around and took photos of the crowd
Former Yankee great "Mr. October" Reggie Jackson

    NYPD marching band

Manager Joe Girardi and the World Series trophy

The owners and other Yankee staff rode on these tour buses

World Series MVP Hideki Matsui who drove in 6 runs in the deciding game.  He's the first Asian player to be named WS MVP.  We were really happy cause he's always been a great and clutch player but one who often gets overlooked.  And his nickname is Godzilla!

Rapper Jay-Z (he performed at the ceremony), Catcher Francisco Cervelli & 3B Alex Rodriguez (his gf Kate Hudson was the only notably absent WAG but it's not about her)

Relief Pitchers Alfredo Aceves, Phil Hughes & Brian Bruney
Pitcher A.J. Burnett kinda looks like this when he's about throw a whipped cream pie

Pitcher CC Sabathia & 1B Mark Teixeira were 2 new players who made an impact

    2B Robinson Cano

Team Captain Derek Jeter & his girlfriend actress Minka Kelly

Hip Hip Jorge! Catcher Jorge Posada

Pitcher Andy Petittite who started and won all the Yankees post-season clinching games

The greatest closer of all time Mariano Rivera was on the last float

There wasn't all that much confetti falling by us.  I didn't see ticker tape but all manner of paper from torn sheets of office paper to shredded newspapers.  People were also tossing rolls of toilet paper back and forth and up at the floats where players exuberantly threw them back into the crowd.

People came decked out in their Yankee gear.  I liked this girl's pj bottoms.
These construction workers had a great view from their elevated positions

It was total madness on Broadway afterwards

And people had to line up to get into the subways...

As much fun as the parade was, cleanup must not have been as fun

It's no secret that I'm an ardent fan of baseball and the NY Yankees.  So I'm super excited that they're this year's American League Champions and will be playing in the World Series against the National League champion Philadelphia Phillies.  It should make for some exciting baseball as it's a pretty even matchup on a level of talent. The Yankees came into the post-season with the best record in baseball winning 103 out of 162 games.  The Phillies are the reigning champs and the fact they've made it this far again proves just how formidable they are.  Of course the epic collapse of the Mets certainly helped.  The 7 game series commences tonight on Fox with JayZ and Alicia Keys set to perform “Empire State of Mind" pre-game.  Hopefully the rain will stop before then.  Mr. B and I will start out sitting in the same spots we were in the last time they won.  If that doesn't work we start moving.  If they score, we don't move.  Just a few of my fave moments from this season.  Go Yankees!

  • A Visual Catch Up

    Thursday, Aug 27, 2009 2:24AM / Members only

Well I'm back...sorta...kinda...not really completely... just yet.  But  I'm putting in a cameo appearance here to say I'm still around, feeling better, getting myself straightened out and just enjoying the summer in NYC.  I hope a good summer is being had by all. Thank you to everyone who's dropped me a comment, message or email.  I apologize for being so slack to respond and for all the blogs I've missed out on but sitting in front of the computer for hours just hasn't been the thing for me lately.  I'll try my best to make it up though I can't make any promises on feeds so please understand.  If anyone wants  me to read a particular blog of theirs, just point it out to me and I will try to oblige.  Here's a bit of a catch up of the past few months in photos.

The last time I blogged about the Yankees, they were in first place.  Well that hasn't changed.  We got to attend 2 games at the new stadium and it rocks.  Our first game on July 4th ended up being a 6 hr. 12 inning affair completed with a dramatic walk off win.  Then we got to see our 1st ever game against division rivals Boston thanks to free tix from a vendor of Mr. B's. We went early to batting practice.  The energy at these games is always more intense and the stadium was shaking when the Yankees scored 9 runs in the 5th inning.  They went on to win the game 13-6.  We're thinking we must bring them good luck.
Our seats were padded and there was waiter service in our section.  Yes we can definitely get used watching games in this manner. Of course a bottle of water also costs $5.

    Cano and Jeter

    CC doing an interview

"The Greatest" Muhammad Ali made a special appearance to present 2 awards to the team

    The Great Hall

    Garlic fries were consumed

Wendy and I caught this year's Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night which featured a talented ensemble led by Anne Hathaway.  It was a long day of waiting but so worth it as the play was very entertaining and a quality production.  The reviewers agreed as Charles Isherwood of The New York Times contends, "Incidentally or perhaps not - the varied talents of its all-American lead cast help restore faith in the city’s ability to cast Shakespeare in depth.  All together now: most wonderful!"  We missed you this year Ivy. Sorry for the lack of pics.  They have a very strict policy on photography but here's a visual of the lovely Anne Hathaway who made a most excellent Viola.

Explored Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.  It was declared a national historic landmark in 2006 and at 478 acres there was plenty to see. Notable residents include Leonard Bernstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Horace Greeley and Boss Tweed.

Did the obligatory walk across the Brooklyn Bridge before it really heated up in the city
"yellow thong" dude is a regular in the park.  He looks inappropriate from certain angles.

Visited the Guggenheim for the first time in many years to view a Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit in celebration of their 50th anniversary.  What great lines and architecture.

Came upon supermodel Linda Evangelista doing a shoot for W magazine in Noilta.  It was super hot and she had this on.  Looked like she wasn't even breaking a sweat but that's what she gets the big bucks for.  Some guy next to us was convinced she was a tranny for some reason and we were like take a good look at her neck and hands dude.
Food pics are coming up for those who haven't eaten.  We did partake in Summer Restaurant Week which has been extended to Labor Day.  A few highlights starting with poached Atlantic halibut from Craftbar.  We did a repeat there since we liked it so much.

    roast heritage pork loin

        orecchiette alla genovese

    creme fraiche panna cotta

the burgers at Ottomanelli's are very tasty and very big
chicken kar - jeabe - handmade noodles and dough flakes from Arirang
avocado toast ~ my current fave thing to eat.  So simple and super yummy!

This sign that's posted outside Rice to Riches, a joint in Nolita  that serves nothing but many varieties of carb-rich rice pudding always cracks me up

This thing actually lasted for about 2 weeks in my hot little hands
Before I used it on these cords. Can't wait to wear them and I want that belt too.

Been coveting these shoes.  Wandered into Bloomies to avoid the rain and found them on sale. Saved an extra 15% on top at their pre-sale so they weren't even $50. Yay for sales!

    Pink flowers make me happy

Took some pics at a wedding. This was my fave.

I wore your headband again today :D I love that it's so soft and also keeps my hair off my face. I've been browsing Etsy a lot the past few days, think I need to get off it before I get myself into trouble :p I saw some doll clothes on there last night and thought of you :)

The weather here has been awful :( Raining and very dark and wet. How's NYC?

What now that baseball season is over? Your back back to 100%? I was advised to try talc-free foundation to help with the clogged pores. Why hadn't anyone suggested this to me before? Hope it helps. You ever use mineral foundation?

We gotta get the hubs in action, lol. Hypnosis if necessary. LOL In Vanness' new one I was messed up to see him on a hockey rink. I'm thinking they built a large in door ice skating rink or they sent Van to Japan to film that.

I haven't tried layering with hoodie under blazer yet, I should try eh? Hehe, you're giving me idea s :D I think I used to be afraid to layer hoodies b/c of the hood, sometimes it made me look like I had a hunchback if I couldn't take the hood out but recently I've been trying to layer more clothing with different textures to create a contrast. Still working on it, hehe :p But reading those fashion blogs really gave me ideas hehe, in a good and bad way :p Good because it gives me more combo ideas, bad b/c it makes me want to spend $$ :(

    woohoo we rock ^^
    hehe

yah, the stache definitlely doesn't suit him, he looks riduculous in the jdrama where his character has it, but I quite like the ridiculous and I like his expressions in my profile pic and the photo I blogged. haha I got it bad ^_~

it's a good point actually, I don't like it when other ethnicities botch who they are playing - getting the language or the accent wrong.

The only exception to this was in Enter the Dragon where this Australian actor played a New Zealander and his interpretation of our accent was incredibly bad (the worst I have ever heard) but as he played a racist jerk, I didn't mind he wasn't recognisable as a NZer.

Oh, yes, you did tell me about the hubby TK connection. I'm waiting for him to find his long lost friend, too. What about a school reunion? Something!

How long as the hubs lived in the US? In Autumn Concerto VanNess is an ice hockey player. I was wondering if that is like the Jamaican bob sled team. Then I just saw a pix of Jiro Wang playing in the snow. I am truly confuckled. I always thought Taiwan was tropical.

hey, sorry for my belated congratulation to Butter and Yankees : ) everybody has been talking about Matsui's MVP. moreover, president Obama mentioned about us-japan relationship, pointing to Matsui's role, before his first visit to Japan.

Congrats. The Yankees deserved it. But it is still feels good being the league champs. It is kinda ethnocentric calling the final series the `world` series. I wonder when that will change? At least with games like cricket and soccer different countries are pitted against one another. haha that really sounded like sour grapes didn`t it? but you know what I mean.
