Well, I guess I get to be first.
I find it hard to believe there are no threads about Ying Choi-Yi. So I offer this self-deprecating anecdote as a means of rectifying said phenomenon.
I phoned her management once about interviewing her. They said they would get back to me.
That evening, I was sitting at dinner with friends. My phone rang.
"Hello?," I said.
"Hi. This is Cherrie Ying."
I didn't know what to do. I looked at my friends, miming photography. I wanted them to take my picture. They ignored me. I spoke with Cherrie about the interview briefly, thanked her, and hung up.
Naturally, her # did not appear on my phone. My friends had not taken my picture. Neither did they believe me when I told them who had called me. Granted, the photo would hardly constitute anything, but I think you understand my motivation. I wanted to capture that moment for posterity.
Photo or not, it is easily one of the top 10 greatest (pleasant) surprises of my life.
Thanks, Cherrie.

That's awesome whitebison...I thought Cherrie was great in Fat Choi Spirit and Itchy Heart. You should be happy to have heard from her, despite what your friends say.
Hope you are/were able to get that interview with her.

Sadly, I never did.

watching her in old episodes of Eric Tsang's Super Trio Show, i always get the impression that Cherrie Ying was like a "dai siu goo por" (a laughing lady). her laughter's so contagious, it scares me.
and on an off-topic note, i've met her boyfriend Jordan Chan at Casino Niagara a few years ago. let's just say that my encounter with him was not very pleasant.

long story...
his fans demanded him to post for the camera and so he did. then i yelled out to him and asked for an autograph. so he had the spotlight at me for a few minutes and we had a quick word with each other at the concert. basically, this is how the conversation went.
Me: AUTOGRAPH!!!
Jordan: So you want my autograph, huh? Why don't I give you a wet kiss instead? Where the hell do you come from?
I got pissed off and immediately gave him the finger as the spotlight was still on me. I sat down right after my exchange of words with Jordan Chan. Seeing Hacken Lee's reaction to Jordan Chan on another TV show that he was hosting, I can tell that Jordan Chan was pretty known for some of his displeasing manners.
In any case, I hope that Cherrie can whip him good and make him behave like the old puppy persona he once possessed in the early 90s.

Guess that's what happens when fame gets to you...they did a poll here of nicest and meanest celebrities when it comes to getting autographs. Nicest guy goes to Johnny Depp and meanest goes to...Will Ferrell!!!
Here's the article:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movies/12/14/people.johnnydepp.ap/index.html
From whitebison's phone call, seems like Cherrie would be on the nice list but from gary's experience, I see Jordan on the mean list.

I don't know if you can count Edison Chen on the mean list.
My friend's cousin worked with him before and he offered a ride to Edison. For some odd reason, EDC just kept blurting out random profanities at him. I've also heard about him attacking a taxi car before. Stuff like that gets pretty uncalled for.
I've also had a quasi-bad experience with Hong Kong actor Adam Cheng Siu-Chau whom you may have remembered from Tsui Hark's "Zu Warriors". Of course, I was only 7 years old at the time so my recollection may be very vague. It happened right in front of a whole lotta TVB executives so it quickly became adapted into a quick little skit on TVB. I can't say how he is now but back in 1988, Adam Cheng is certainly not very kid-friendly.
On the other hand, former Wynners band member Bennett Pang (Pang Kin-Sang) was at that same event where I met Adam Cheng many years ago. He was very pleasant to be with. He was nice enough to make me roll into laughter after we did a quick acapella of his old song. (For those who know their cantopop, it's the song where he talks about getting a suntan and stripping off your clothes) He even drew a squiggly little portrait of himself. Real fun guy! Would love to reunite with him someday. (i know he's coming to toronto along with his Wynners bandmates soon but ain't got no cash for their concert.)

I first noticed her in the movie Fulltime Killer a while back. I found it weird that I noticed her character more than Kelly Lin's character and Cherrie Ying's character was a throwaway character. Then watching the making of Fulltime Killer, she gave a glimpse of her energy that would become one of her signiture characteristics. After a while, I stopped watching Hong Kong movies for some reason and then I happen to see more movies with her. After seeing the advances she's made in her career, I can see her career lasting a very long time. I think what she does a great job in doing for most of her movies is making the characters believable and she makes it like you could relate to them (except for Lethal Angels).
The one movie that kind of surprised me was Rob-B-Hood. Reason being that she happens to be paired up with Louis Koo in a lot of films and it didn't happen this time around. What I want to see is a movie that really tests Cherrie Ying's dramatic acting abilities. Her past movies have always had a comedic edge to downplay the potential drama of those movies (Mr. 3 Minutes comes to mind).
But even if a movie like that is not happening anytime soon, I'd still go and watch her movies just to see the energy of her acting.

Having more presence than Kelly Lin isn't hard to do, but Cherrie does have a lot of energy that translates onto the screen. She is also extremely photogenic; some people just look better on camera than others (like Louis Koo); she has that.

Meh, the reason why it surprised me was because Kelly Lin was the leading actress with plenty of screen time while Cherrie was only in the movie for a few scenes just to get killed off. When I watch that movie now, if it ain't for the plot then its probably just because Cherrie Ying is in the movie. But yeah even though she didn't showcase her now usual energetic acting in that movie, she left an impression in the end.

I thought she was fantastic in Itchy Heart, playing the girl that Lau Ching-Wan takes care of while his wife is away in Japan. From the moment they meet in the nightclub to the disasterous camping scene, she just showed amazing chemistry with Lau IMO.
I haven't seen Kung Fu Mahjong 2 yet, but plan to because both her and Terence Yin are in it, and because I have the fist one on DVD and I am a huge Yuen Wah fan.

Yeah I really liked her in Itchy Heart. She was perfect for that character as her energy fits well and goes to show how aged Lau Ching-Wan's character is. Itchy Heart was definitely one of her better if not best roles to date.

I haven't see Throwdown either, but I'm interested to see it for the judo sequences. I heard it was actually pretty good.

I was there. I was probably still in shock over Yung Yung being happy to see me. I found it...
