Cloudz7 - Maybe one of these days soon, after we've shot "Jasmine," I'll post some production stills for you.  Deal?  Regarding my "Asian lineage,"  it would be really fascinating to one day find out how much truth there is to the rumor that my grandfather was half-Chinese. It's funny, some people look at me and think there is obviously some Asian "in the woodpile," so to speak. Other people look at me and think that I'm making it up because... well, to be honest, I don't know why they think I'd make it up. I don't think being a mutt is anything to write home about, personally.  Although, many people believe that Eurasians are some of the most beautiful people in the world... So, there's that, I guess.

RenRen - I returned to L.A. about two weeks ago.  Technically, I live here in Los Angeles.  However, thanks to my profession, I'm able to spend at least three months of the year in New Orleans.  I just spent a month in Hong Kong and, within the next year, plan to get a third residence there.  I can't wait!

Neighbors

You live in LA? Me too. We're neighbors. Well hopefully not for long anyways...I think my next stop will be either New York or Hong Kong (if I'm lucky). So where do you want to live next?

So what is this Asian lineage topic that is being discussed? I don't get it. So you look Asian but you're not? When I was in HK people kept asking me if I was part Portuguese? I don't see it. My parents don't see it. My friends don't see it either...well except one, but she's from the suburbs of Illinois so I forgive her.

I would be perfectly happy living in Hong Kong.  That is definitely where I plan to move next, although I will always keep a place in L.A.

Regarding the Asian thing, I posted a lengthy answer to this recurring question in the "about me" section on my Myspace page (www.myspace.com/daxphelan).  You can learn all the dirty details there...

My Space

I don't like MySpace...but I guess I will sign on just to read about your Asian thing just because you write really interesting blogs.

So, can you recommend some good restaurants...?  Not the obvious ones.  I'm talking about the hidden little gems that you keep to yourself...

RenRen,

All of the above!  Some friends and I regularly go to a dim sum place on Sundays, but I'm always on the look out for new, good places.  Also, sushi is one of my favorite things in life.  A friend of mine is in town from HK and I was thinking about taking her to Matsuhisa, but I'm always open to trying new places.  So, give me the lowdown!

OMG! Please do not tell me you go get dim sum regularly in Chinatown because I will judge you.

My recommendations:
Dim Sum
Sea Harbor - 10 east, exit Rosemead (take 2nd exit), it will be on your left hand side before you reach Valley Blvd. You want to get here early on the weekends...10 or 10:30 will be ideal or else you will have wait an hour. On the weekdays...well since it's summer...you want to get here by 10:30.

New Capital - 10 east, exit Del Mar toward San Gabriel...it's right across the street from the Hilton. Sam Woo's lease was up so New Capital took over. The dim sum always comes out hot. I stay away from any of their desserts though. Long long lines starting from 9:00 in the morning...but that's because the price is cheap.

Elite Restaurant - I heard the owner of Yeo's (the soybean drink maker) owns this place. The food is pretty tasty and the wait is not as long as Sea Harbor or New Capital. Take the 10 east, exit Atlantic toward Monterey Park...I think the cross street is El Portal.

Sushi
Tsukiji in Gardena http://www.yelp.com/biz/i7QRMPU352X5b0Vinc19iA
Hide Sushi in West LA http://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=oTWT6EWETm1xMbAfw5NNMw
Sushi Zo http://www.yelp.com/biz/9atAfNzeCGq6NCfHVpYIUg

Steak
Mastro's Steakhouse - Beverly Hills. I've only been here once but it was a memorable experience.

Damon's Steakhouse - It's in Glendale but I forgot how to get there. So you're going to have to google it.

Asian
Jazzcat - Mini hot pots. It's awesome! I know it's hot but this place is so much fun and so yummy. Take the 10 east, exit Atlantic toward Alhambra, right on Valley and it's going to be on your right side. I think the cross street is 5th ave.

Savoy - Take the 10 east, exit Garfield toward Alhambra, right on Valley...I think the cross street is Monterey...should be on your right side. Order the Hainan Chicken, pizza, pasta, shrimp rolls...everything is tasty.

If you need recommendations on cupcake places...I can give you a list of bakeries too.

Okay I'm going to watch Die Hard now.
