Cool new twitter
the hugeness that is The Expendables
"today wasone of those days when you realize just how BIG this film is. With 2units shooting, 300 crew members, half who speak only Portuguese, carstunt, Statham hanging out of a plane, explosives, hundred extras and85 degree heat with 85% humidity. But through it all Sly has kept hiscool while acting, directing and tweaking lines with his cast. ThankGod tomorrow is all on a process trailer!! Then we head back to Rio toget into the meat of the action - Sly has written and Chad out stuntcoordinator has choreographed a freakin amazing battle. I’ve worked ona few action films (T3, Collateral Damage,Eraser, Sixth Day) but I cantell you THIS IS BIG!! it is also the biggest film ever shot in Brazil(The Hulk doesn’t count). It is clear the village of Mangaratiba willnever be the same. they have been very gracious as we took over thetown but as I said before this is the biggest thing to happen here…ever. So I will be quiet for the next 3 days to regroup and relax. Ithas been non-stop since we landed 8 days ago. Ciao for now."

In all the pictures, in all the movies I have ever seen with Jason Statham, all combined, I don't think I've EVER seen him smile or laugh more than he did in that series of photos from the set of The Expendables. Know what I mean? Am I even exaggerating?
Sly's doing some crazy stuff there. Even jumping off a five foot wall is crazy in the sense that a twisted ankle can ruin a shooting schedule.
Ok, have fun down there boys!

Nope, you're not exaggerating... Jason looked genuinely tickled.
Sly still has a nice headful of hair, though it may be dyed. It looks good to me.

Yeah this is a dream project for Jason, a chance to work with one of his idols on a huge film.
Stallone even at 62 is trying to do as many stunts on his own that he possible can but your right even small stunts like that could set the film back.

I'm agreeing with you, Flagday. Statham looks like he's just a boy on a playground in those pics. As cool as it is to be a fan and reading about this film being made, I can't IMAGINE how cool it must be to actually BE INIT.

some more twitter expendables blog posts.
The way I see it April 14, 2009 by ethelmae sowe are now into week 2 here in Brazil. today we are shooting in therural area of Colonia about 1 1/2 hours outside Rio. It is also wherethe mental institution is located although compared to some of our creweveryone acts pretty normal. The set is situated in the jungle whichis filled with mosquitoes and ticks among other things. Factor in theextreme heat and humidity, the occasional downpour, 300 hundred crewmembers, hundred extras, 4 cameras, cranes, huge lighting set ups, alanguage barrier and the merging of two completely different ways ofworking (US vs Brazil) you could have a recipe for disaster. Bu wedon’t, thanks to Sly and his total command of the set along with thetotal professionalism of the cast. No whiners on this film thank God. Today is pretty cool - barney Ross (SLY) and Lee Christmas (JASON)ambush some of Garza’s (DAVID ZAYES) henchmen and all hell breaksloose. I am really impressed with Giselle Itie - she is perfect forthe role of Sandra. Then there’s the p’razzi who are literally hangingout of the tress in the mountains trying to get a shot. One guy toldme he can shoot wherever he likes cause he is a photographic lawyer. Itold him I was a ballerina…that’s it for now. stay tuned.
Sly’s stunt double must be getting bored April 15, 2009 by ethelmae sotoday I heard Sly say, in an understated way, he was about to do thestunt of his life. Hmmm…sounded pretty cool. I’ve seen some prettybig action dudes do some pretty tricky stunts (no disrespect to theincredible guys who risk life and limb by doing dangerous stunts for aliving) so it takes a lot to impress me. well today you can color meimpressed…a lot…for real…by Sly. The freakin guy is fearless andpretty much ageless. No matter how I describe what I watched him do -6 times - it won’t even be close to conveying what it was - a classicold school mano a mano takedown. Keep in mind there were no mats onthe ground and Sly was basically bareback - no pads except for on hisknees as he dove, rolled, flipped, growled and punched his way throughthe scene ending with him breaking a neck. Oh and did I mention thesweltering heat and hte hard dusty ground he kept slamming his bodyinto. Sly was bleeding and bruised but after watching the last take heturned around and said “that’s how you teach the children.” Then he setup the next shot.
also this is from sly's publicist at AICN : Hi-publicist lady here with some updates Terry crews arrives in Rio tomorrow, Jet Li next week.

Your very welcome my friend
I know what you mean I can't wait to see Jet either, hopefully next week. Sly has impressed me though. You can see he's putting his heart and soul into this film and a passion to do the best he possibly can and i think that enthusiasm with rub off onto the rest of the cast. That has to be commendable.

New update. Like the last part about Sly and Jason's chemistry. Pretty cool.
http://ethelmae.wordpress.com/
ok that was a freakin long day
April 16, 2009 by ethelmae
afterthe wild day on Tuesday with Sly’s stunt and Jason Statham showing justhow badass he is with a knife, I was kinda hoping for an easier daytoday. Unfortunately that was not going to happen. We shot on thestreets of Rio in what I know only as Boxing Square which I think isnear downtown Rio. Eric Roberts and Steve Austin rolled through theficsmileious village of Vilena with a military escort. The militia thenproceeded to terrorize the locals before driving off. We also shot thescene where Barney and Lee Christmas first meet Sandra, played byGiselle Itie, in a little cantina. We had a lot of lookie loos todaywhich was to be expected but I didn’t see any p’razzi…but I’m sure theywere there. We also had the not as funny as they think they are guysfrom the TV show Panico following us around trying to get close to Slyso they could challenge him to arm wrestle…sheesh what a waste ofbraincells. At any rate we had 7 scenes to shoot at 4 differentlocations within the couple of blocks that make up the square. A veryambitious day but with the sunny skies and bearable heat and humiditylife was good. Until the thunderstorm hit, delaying the shoot andsending us to lunch early. visitors to the set today included directorFernando Meirelles (City of God, Constant Gardner) and ultimate fighterVitor Belfort. We wrapped around 9pm and I fell asleep writing thisupdate…we have a late call today - back out to Colonia. Next week, ourlast week in Rio - we shoot nights…the big battle. one littleobservation - I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised to see awhole different side of Statham in this movie. Yes of course he isbadass, but he and Sly have a real chemistry and the repartee betweenthem reveals character and humor…it is fascinating to watch themtogether…
on a personal note, I read your comments on this blogand elsewhere and I appreciate the feedback - Sly also reads them…butto be clear, these are my observations unless otherwise posted. I tryto write with a little humor and a lot of truth (even though I am apublicist) and for those who write nasty little emails calling me aracist and a hater of Brazil and Brazilians I suggest you re-read whatyou wrote to me…that’s where you will find the hate, not here.

Thanks JJM. No one ever called me "cool" before. I mean I am. Just no one ever noticed.
Jet's character is " P i n g P o n g ." OMG, that's funny. I hope he gets to show off some of his ping pong skills. I think I read somewhere he likes to play table tennis to relax. Is it called ping pong in China I wonder?
With the timing it doesn't look like Jet will be in the Brazil action any more than seven days of filming will allow. And that's not much.

Twitter update
Oh what a lucky gal I am…
April 19, 2009 by ethelmae
sitinghere in the parking lot across from the beautiful Pargue Loge, aniconic spot in Rio that we are using as General Garza’s palace. Nestledjust above the structure is the beautiful statue of Jesus. It’s a clearcool night and I am a happy camper. So for those of you who asked me tostop complaining about the weather…your wish is my commmand.
Slyis directing tonight - he’s not in any of the scenes. the actors allseem pleasantly surprised that he is an actor’s director. I think youwill see some d**n good performances. Sly is also a visionary - heknows exactly what this movie is and exactly how it should look and isconfident enough to make some pretty daring choices.
i asked theart director about the seaplane and he told me it is an Albatross, built in the ’50’s. There were approximately 500 built by Gruman in theUS and somewhere between 5 and 30 still fly. Originally used for searchand rescue . the one we use in a way too cool scene was piloted bystunt pilot/professional Lynne Hunt. I love the fact the fuel tanks canbe jettisoned in case of emergency.
Someone asked how much Sly weighs now - he lost 32 pounds since Rambo and currently weighs in at 180.
Danny Trejo us not in the film. Sly met with him and wanted him but when he rewrote the script he needed a different look.
okI’m not a big star gazer but i am soooo excited about Jet Li. He startswork on Monday…should be lots to write about when the 3 of them aretogether.
they jsut called lunch (it’s 11pm) so I’m off to the food room.

Author:
Flagday Time: 2009-4-21 12:22 AM Subject: Why we like to watch Jason Statham ...
... but maybe not in EVERY Jet movie.
I liked Jason in Lock, Stock, The Transporter series, Crank 1, The Bank Job, The Italian Job, .... He's just fun to watch.
There was in article in Slate which I thought was an interesting read. And since he looks like he's having real fun filming this movie, maybe we'll even see another facet of Jason.
The Last Action Hero - How Jason Statham became theworld's biggest B-movie star.
By Jody RosenUpdated Friday, April17, 2009, at 11:05 AM ET

Jason Statham and Amy Smart in Crank: High Voltage
Jason Statham's greatness announced itself early in his acting career—88 seconds into his motion picture debut, to be precise, in the opening sequence of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998). Statham plays Bacon, a small-time criminal peddling stolen merchandise ("Handmade in Italy, hand-stolen in Stepney") on a London street corner. Suddenly, the police show up; Bacon and his accomplice take flight; and then, rounding a rain-slickened corner with a suitcase under his arm, he nearly tips over, performing a ridiculous little shuffle-step at an almost-45-degree angle to the pavement, his feet moving furiously but his forward motion momentarily stalled, like Wile E. Coyote in the instant before he realizes he has run out of clifftop road and is about to plummet 5,000 feet into a canyon. Whereupon Bacon regains his footing, vaults a barrier, and spills the entire contents of his suitcase as he races down a flight of stairs.
This is the essence of Statham-ism,a mix of bionic brute force and slapstick—Robocop meets Keystone Cops. It's a formula that has made Statham the biggest action hero going: Since 2001,Statham star vehicles have grossed $500 million worldwide. Currently, Statham is the face of two hit franchises: The Transporter, whose latest sequel,Transporter 3 (2008), earned more than $100 million, and Crank, whose second installment, Crank: High Voltage, arrives in theaters this Friday with the irresistible tag line "He was dead … But he got better."
For those keeping count, that's one more action movie franchise than any other Hollywood leading man can claim, unless you want to put a check-mark in Vin Diesel's column based on hisvoice-over work in the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay video game. But Statham is largely unsung. Critics prefer Matt Damon's Jason Bourne movies—and why wouldn't they? With their virtuoso camerawork and existentialist overtones, the Bourne films are action flicks for cinéastes, and Damon's performances are admirably taut and understated. Of course, Damon is a thespian. Jason Statham is merely the biggest B-movie star in the world.

As an action fan, I gotta say Statham snuck up on me. I wasn't a big fan of Transporter so I found myself kind of shying away from him...until I saw Death Race. Which made me hit up my Netflix queue with more Statham movies and...now I'm a fan.
As excited as I've been to see Jet footage from this movie, it's been a real kick to see photos of Statham and Stallone together. Kinda like old school meets new school. Old guard meets new guard. UBER cool.

Very cool, thanks JJM. : )
I can't help feeling a bit sorry for Jet lol. Any time he's in public he's under a microscope. Doesn't matter is he just got off a plane after however many hours of flight & might be tired, maybe jet lagged or whatever. I would so hate to be photographed & followed everywhere the way he is. I guess it's what he signed on for, and as I've said before I sure wouldn't mind the money. Just keep the fame haha.

Your very welcome Seeker.
I know what you mean about Jet being under a constant microscope but I think he's came to terms with that a long time ago but what i do think is great is that he's not like some of these pompous celebrities who let fame get to their heads and lash out at photographers. Jet is always level headed, cool and calm and uses his fame to help promote his foundation.
Right back to updates. Still no new twitter update yet or pics on Yesterday or todays filming but hopefully there will be tonight. Although I do have this pic from the Expendables set in Colonia. Also the bottom one is John Herzfeld. He's filming a behind the scenes documentary with this camera. Herzfeld is the best friend of Sly.

Your welcome my friend, I'm happy to do it. Hopefully the updates will get even better as they go along.
Are you talking about my writings or just general stuff about me? If it's my writings then well then to tell you the truth I'm going through writers block. I can't really come up with or finish anything at the moment and its so frustrating. Its weird I go through phases where I'll write for a few weeks, get bored then mess around with my art for a few weeks. Its a never ending cycle where I have loads of unfinished work lol.
Twitter Update last night
'm testing the adage good things come to those who wait...and wait....and wait...
actionflicks and the badasses (male & female) who make them. Arnold andSly set the bar, rebuked stereotyping and gave us all some of the mostmemorable moments on film. So when I have the privilege of standing inthe middle of what is The Expendables set, in Rio de Janeiro, I have topose the question…how lucky am I!!!! Watching Sly act and direct andbeing on the set with Randy Couture (not to mention the afore swoonedover Jet Li, the totally manned up Statham, the gloriously beautifulTerry Crews and of course “the Man” himself, Sylvester Stallone) I amgrateful for a fortunate life. there’s no disputing Randy Courture is atough guy but yesterday when I sat down with him at lunch - wellactually dinner since it was 11:30pm - I got a glimpse of who he is…adetermined focused down to earth athlete who enjoys what he does andwho he is. All the fems on the show are now formally in love with him. Then there’s Terry Crews…magnificent man clad in a magnificent body. Iworked with Terry on his first film - “The Sixth Day” with Arnold andalthough he wasn’t convinced I knew he would one day be living thedream. He is a sweet caring man who is grateful for his good fortune. Both Randy & Terry are really gracious towards the fans. so yagotta love that. Tonight is our last night of shooting main unit herein Brazil - second unit will continue for a few days in Mangartiba. Ihave mixed feelings about leaving Rio…this hasn’t been an easy 3 weeksof shooting (I’ve been here a month) and aside from the normal problemsof working in a foreign country I have really enjoyed the experience.I’ve learned a lot about the Brazilian culture, made a few mistakes (Iinadvertently made a tourism person cry) and had a few laughs. But mostof all I’ve made a few friends who I cherish and am grateful to forhelping me through this adventure. As I said…how lucky am I. Morelater. Ciao tscau for now.

Thanks martialartslove I appreciate that.
cool update.Jets birthday BQ: We went to what was recommended as Rio'sbest BBQ. Jet wasn't very familiar with the different types of meat, sothe poor guy in green ended up eating most of Jet's "try outs"
The second pic:
Hungry bee: While standing in line on CorcovadoHill, we bought some soda from vendors. It was a hot day, andapparently bees nearby were as thirsty as we were. After Jet opened hiscoke a bee crawled in unnoticed. Jet takes a swig and ratherunceremoniously spits out the coke along with the bee. In the end bothwere OK-Jet didn't get stung and the bee shrugged off the soda and flewaway.
pic 3:
Mountain top view: before arriving on CorcovadoHill we stopped by a nearby mountain top to take in the view. Brazil'sbeauty was absolutely stunning. Jet and the crew at the top:

Couture-Nogueira test run?
By Loretta Hunt (lhunt@sherdog.com)
Scott Doctor/Splash News
Will Couture get a test run?
Sunday, 12:10 a.m. ET: If Sylvester Stallone has his way, Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will lay hands on each other long before they enter the Octagon.
The legendary couple is slated to face one another in a heavyweightcontest at UFC 102 on Aug. 29 in Portland, Ore. But before fans see theformer UFC champion and his Pride counterpart come to blows, Stallonemight orchestrate a test run in his new film “The Expendables,” currently shooting in Brazil.
Couture -- a budding thespian who’s had roles in “The Scorpion King 2”and the CBS military series “The Unit” -- plays “Toll Road,” one offive mercenaries sent to South America to overthrow a dictatoralongside action movie staples Jet Li, Jason Statham, and Stallone, whoalso directs.
Nogueira, and his twin brother Rogerio, also play soldiers in the flick.
Couture finished his initial scenes in Brazil this week, where the45-year-old’s rigorous training schedule evidently came in handy.
“We shot from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., and I was so jacked up,”Couture told Sherdog.com. “I never felt tired and had to wind down foran hour or so before I could go to sleep.”
Couture is on a two-week hiatus until May 10, when reunites with theteam in New Orleans to continue shooting for the adrenaline-lacedblockbuster. Select scenes have been re-scheduled to go down in the BigEasy due to inclement weather and production issues in Brazil.
As for working with the big screen’s original underdog?
“Sly was very intense, but also very in tune with the otheractors and what needed to come across in the scenes,” said Couture.“Shooting went great.”
“The Expendables” is scheduled to swoop into theatres in April 2010.

It is set up where any blogs posted on here automatically gets fed into his Facebook page, but not sure if there's a way for them to do it vice-versa.
I do know one of them. As I recall, they just went through the same kind of interview process we go through when applying for a job. How one finds out about these opportunities is another thing.

Apparently this book by Fredrick Forsythe is pretty close to the same story as the Expendables..It's called Dogs of War and was made into a film back in 1980..interesting.

Lundgren made an earlier movie about mercenaries called Men of War. It's a little zany, but it's worth checking out if you're into those old(er) action movies that have a lot of running and gunning. It takes place on this island that's being assaulted by an opposing group of guns for hire and Dolph pretty much destroys all of them (and half the island). It's one of his better performances though and he's got a weird little group of mercs helping him.

Hi guys just saw this on the Jet Li facebook page.
The 5th of May brings us about 1week before the 12th of May, the day of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Aspart of a week-long remembrance campaign, here is the first of anexclusive 2 part mini series honoring the victims of the earthquake. Also you get to see the Expendables looking all tough saying "One family, Walks together". I though it was cool but if you look at the pic it almost feels like their saying "One family, Walks together or else lol

twitter update finally hopefully things will start picking up.Packing for NoLa
May 5, 2009 by ethelmae
soI’m headed to fabulous NoLa on Wednesday and I must admit I am chompingat the bit to get back into production. I mean I was kinda lefthangin…all revved up and no where to go. And while I loved loungingaround my lovely Hermosa Beach, catching up on sleep, seeing friendsand watching past episodes of “Toddlers & Tiaras” I NEED SOMEACTION PEOPLE!!!!! and it looks like that’s what I will get. So I ampsyched.
It’s my understanding the role of Church has not yetbeen finalized but it could be very interesting so stay tuned. MickeyRourke is definitely an Expendable and works in about 10 days. 90% ofthe cast will arrive in NoLa this coming weekend and we start shootingon the 11th. having everyone on set next week will I’m sure cause me tobecome apoplectic…I mean seriously folks…Sly, Jason, Jet, Terry, Dolph,Randy, Mickey…
next time you hear from me I will be sipping chickory laced coffee and munching on a beignet…
SOUNDS LIKE WE MIGHT HEAR THE OFFICIAL WORD ON CHURCH SOON |

I am... curious as to what I will make of The Expendables. I am not a fan of beefcake so the idea of all those big muscly blokes rushing about doing alpha stuff doesn't automatically excite me. I am wondering what little, graceful Jet will be doing alongside them all.
But I mustn't be too cynical. I must just watch the movie when it comes out and suspend my disbelief and let the movie speak for itself. I hope I will be pleasantly surprised. When I first read about 'Danny the Dog' (or Unleashed as it is sometimes called) I thought I would absolutely hate it but I actually really love it. So there you go - I must be broad minded.

Twitter update.ok now that I found mywallet, had a beignet and some jambalaya and found a space in theproduction office I am ready to roll. The cast, with the exception ofSly, arrives in NoLa over the next few days. Next Friday we have allthe boys on one set -Sly, Jason, jet, randy, Dolph,Terry and Mickey –should be pretty cool Mickey works for 2 days. Arnold will shoot hisscene in LA on a date TBD. We start shooting on Monday at the LouisianaFilm Studios in Harahan – pretty impressive I must say. And while manyof our locations are practical (in and around NoLa’s central businessdistrict) we have several days of stage work as well. Yesterday Sly wason Canal Street where he took possession of his newest baby – a 2006tricked out to the max Ford Mustang GT convertible. Sweeet is anunderstatement. Some of the folks passing by were shocked when theyrealized it was Sly standing there admiring his new wheels. Prettycool. I spoke to WWL a local radio station and told them how excited weare to be here in the Big Easy…and we are. Other than that I amcounting the hours til Monday. Hopefully by then I can release the nameof the actor playing Church. Off to a production meeting then I gottasee Star Trek tonight!!! oh BTW…Terry Crews character name has revertedto the original – Hale Cesear…bye bye Jazz Gumbo. And Jet Li’scharacter name is not Ping Pong…whew.

So should be getting some new pics to post soon. Also I don't know about you but I'm glad Jets not called Ping Pong, I never liked that to begin with lol. Anyway guys all the best until next time

Twitter update:
And we’re rolling…
May 12, 2009 by ethelmae
camerasrolled yesterday with Jason and Sly doing some pretty cool stuff. Thesets Franco Carbone built on stage look great. today we have DavidZayas, Giselle Itie and Eric Roberts. Dolph Lundgren stopped by for awardrobe fitting and the guy is in excellent shape – don’t believe thep’razzi shots you see - the guy is fit. Jet Li is also now in NoLa –Mickey Rourke arrives tomorrow and will work on Thursday and Friday. We’ve been on stage at the Louisiana Film Studios in Harahan – tomorrowwe move to South Peters Street for 3 days where THE EXPENDABLES willfinally all be together. should be freakin great.
I will bereleasing an exclusive shot hopefully tonight…it’s a cool shot of Slytaken yesterday during a stunt. sure wish the studio had betterinternet access (wireless please!!) so I could do it from set…but thatis my only complaint about the place…so far. Oh and the women’sbathroom is kinda funky…
I’m also adding a photo of anoutrageously righteous beyond customized motorcycle Sly bought at thebiker convention or Biker Week or whatever the heck it’s called. all Iknow is there were a lot of crazy ass bikes..my faves are still theones Jesse James does but the guy who spent five years building thebike Smajor kudos…I need to get that guy’s name to give him his props…
Okas for Church – some of you have it right but I can’t release the nameuntil the deal is absolutely finalized. I’m not trying to tease you Iam trying to cover I disagree so bear with me…you won’t bedisapoointed..at least most of you won’t.
as for Arnold…how muchtime he can devote to his “cameo” depends on what is happening in Cali…but Sly promises every minute of Arnold’s screen time will deliver.Since I worked with Arnold for 13 years it will be fun to be back on aset with him…and Sly…and Church
that’s t for now…hey if any ofyou are in the DC area check out the photo exhibit at the Smithsonian –the one featuring work from the official Obama inauguration. Our unitphotog, Karen Ballard, is prominently feautred in the book and in theSmithsonian exhibit along with other great photogs like David Kennerly…
that’sit for now..me and my rented Kia will be heading across the mightyMississippi with the Ragin Cajun turned up really loud…
twitter update:
and I didn’t say it was Bruce Willis as Church…also Sands, Lickson, Emmanuel and Richard characters are out…

Oh, Jet in a baseball cap. I wonder if he's comfortable.
Because I know Star is not! hahaha
Also picturing him with a big 'ol gun so I can we assume he'll be using weapons more than his MA skills? Maybe.
Since his star power seems to be selling the movie maybe Jet will have MORE screen time than I feared he was allotted. Good.

oh what a lucky man he was…. May 14, 2009 by ethelmae yesI am obsessing with song lyrics but hey I had an amazing day yesterday. Shooting in a machine shop on South Peters here in NOLA – first shotwas with Sly, jason, jet, Randy & Terry…then we moved into thescene with Sly and Dolph that for me was a real cinematic moment. Aside from their history let me tell you they have amazing chemistry. Jeffrey Kimball’s lighting for that scene added just the rightdramatic touch…it was very cool. And the folks staying at the hotelacross the street got a real treat as Sly and Dolph hung around videovillage which was in the middle of South Peters street. We wrappedaround midnight. Today we started at 3pm – tomorrow around 6pm…that’swhen we finally have ALL of them together including Mickey andDolph…I’m gonna so excited I will be chasing my tail just like MissSadie ..

wefinished week 1 of a 7 week shoot here in NOLA and I gotta tell ya itwas a freakin amazing week. Seriously I know I’m a publicist but I amalso a lucky fan who scored the perfect job…Friday night/Saturdaymorning I was standing in the middle of South Peters Street at 5:30amwatching Sly Jason Mickey Dolph and the guys roar out of Tool’s garageon indescribable choppers (Jason rode a Ducati) that wereloud…seriously loud…like vrrrooom vvrrrooooom LOUD so apologies to theneighborhood – but it was do d**n exciting. Total bummer we only hadMick for 2 days – he had to get back to Iron Man 2…but he and hischaracter brought a vibe to the set that was just the element needed tobond the whole cast together. Seeing the expendables sitiing aroundTools tattoo parlor plotting, planning and just being guys kind of blewme away…the p’araazi finally revealed hemselves on Friday on rooftopand hanging out of windows and we had lots of fans who definitely sawsome action. Today we are at Fort McComb…not sure where exactly that iseven though I drove here but it is beautiful and quite peaceful outhre. Just the place for a torture scene…
I know you are anxious to hear who’s playing Church and I am anxious toreveal it but the deal is still not sealed…you’ve been very patient!

Finally a cool update:
Hanging out at Fort McComb
By ethelmae
shootingall week at Fort McComb off Chef Menteur Highway about 30 minutes fromthe center of NOLA. The fort was built in 1822 and used by theConfederate army for about a year at the start of the Civil War beforebeing retaken by the Union army. Lots of catacombs and tunnels but Icant go too far inside or I have a sneeze attack from all the mold andgod knows what else. Interesting place – haven’t seen any gators whichI hear are all around but we do have snakes and 6 pygmy goats who workfor the state of Louisiana as self contained lawnmowers. I love that! It’s here where we shoot some major battle scenes and theaforementioned water boarding scene. That scene literally left us allgagging. it was intense and could be one of the most effective scenesin the film. But then again there are so many of those moments in thisfilm and we are just getting into the meaty stuff. Sly, Jason, Jet,Randy, Steve etc insist on doing their own stunts…even the actor (orwas it an actress) who got water boarded didn’t use a stuntperson…yesterday we had the Nogueira twins on set – sheesh those guysare humongous! A little trivia – Rodrigo Nogueira fights Randy Couturein August in Portland so the dynamic between those two is prettyinteresting. So far today Jason has done a hammer time on a fewunsuspecting lookouts while Jet kicked his way through some walls. Allwhile Sly was releasing himself from a stranglehold and Randy wasflipping and puttingthe hurt on another goon. After lunch Sly and SteveAustin mix it up again and this time they go in for the kill so tospeak. Next week we shoot a big car chase sequence near Esplanade andN. Claiborne…should be nuts…
http://ethelmae.wordpress.com/2009/05/20/hanging-out-at-fort-mccomb/
I've been told this is a pic from the film.

Yeah me too. I think the ego's are running high between the guys and they all want to show off to each other and of course its all in good fun. Stallone wants a similar dynamic to what the cast of Predator had. However i can't see it being anywhere as good but if its half as good then I will be happy. I just want to be entertained with this one. The more testosterone the better lol

About doing his own stunts Jet (and others actors) must doing it in very good conditions and preparation , i hope so. And if the atmosphere between the actors is good , that's better for each of them.

hi!
here is a message on Facebook
Hello everyone, a quick update: I am still here in lovely New Orleans. Our shoots in the past 2 weeks have taken us from the a historic Civil War fort on the edge of the Bayou to an all-American, classic machine shop. Last week we shot our first fight segment with the wonderful Steve Austin, and we expect more exciting segments in the coming weeks. I hope you all enjoyed a great holiday weekend.

CharismaCarpenter was on set today and she is pretty cool – and beautiful – andnice. I haven’t seen her since Buffy…my bad. I’m now a fan…again. Sheplays Lacy, Lee Christmas’ girlfriend. I’m thinkin there’s going to besome chemistry there…from a woman’s perspective I would vaporize if acool looking british accented badass pulled up to my house on a Ducatiwith a bottle of champagne. Indeed. Today we were in the dreaded palacetunnels where a big battle takes place between the Expendables andGarza’s red beret guards. Some of the guards have warrior like paint ontheir faces. Kind of freaky and pretty intense. Sly Jason Jet RandyTerry Steve Austin and Gary Daniels worked today. The Expendables werein their swat garb…sweet. Sly handed out crew t-shirts today – blackwith the Expendables logo on the back (the entire back of th shirt is ahuge raven and skull) and on the front left…tomorrow we head back tomid-city to shoot Lacy’s apartment – Monday we’re at City Park.
soChurch…there is a scheduling conflict that is being worked out. Thescript went through a re-write and Brittany Murphy’s character wasdeleted. there’s no teaser trailer yet but we do have 60 seconds of BTSfootage I was hoping to post but there is some debate as to whetherthat helps or hurts the marketing and publicity plan by peakinginterest too early. I don’t understand that thought process – I see itdifferently…but I don’t call the shots. So we shall see or rather youshall see, hopefully.

wow how cool does that sound. Jet has committed himself much more to this project than I originally thought which is awesome, the more the better. I remember when he said months back that he would only commit to two weeks to a film so he must be enjoying himself. I wonder if Sly will actually use this tune for the actual sequence with Jet. Interesting indeed. Anyway heres the tune if u want to check it out and imagine what the scene might lool like.

Cult of Personality June 11, 2009 by ethelmae workingon a film shot on location is similar to a traveling circus…lots ofmoving parts, lots of different personalities, long hours and littletime for social engagement outside of work. So the cast and crewbecome a family of sorts – kinda dysfunctional like most families but afamily nonetheless. As in most families there is a hierarchy and theway I see it… the producers are the parents constantly telling you whatyou can and cannot do, the director is the teacher and lifeguide, the actors are the children and the crew – well I guess we arethe glue that holds it all together. when you have an adventure suchas the one we’ve had shooting The Expendables you tend to bond withyour co-workers. I am always fascinated by set dynamics – it neverfails… the oddest couples emerge…Eric Roberts and Steve Austin forexample – these guys are day and night but as Eric told me last night,Steve is now his new best friend. Their common ground – a raucoussense of humor among other things. Both of them are pretty freakinfunny and together they are hilarious. Terry and Randy are like the setambassadors – they always have a smile or kind word for everyone butthey both look like they could break you in half in a New York minute. Jason…ah Jason… well he’s the guy everyone wants to be or be with!! He is a really focused let’s make it better, rougher, meaner kind ofguy who just looks freakin awesome in that swat garb…holy cow people. He is longtime friends with Mickey – it was very cool having them onset together….Jet Li is the consummate professional. He is alwaysprepared always on point and totally immerses himself when on camera. I was taken aback by his keen sense of humor and his love forshopping!! I am also impressed with his commitment to his foundation(www.onefoundation.cn). There is only ONE Earth. Each of us has onlyONE life. We share the planet, and that makes us ONE global family. Byhelping others, we are also helping ourselves. Together we can overcomeany challenge or difficulty. We encourage you to join us and helpsupport the One Foundation. Pretty inspiring! Dolph is the one peoplelook up to. He reinvented himself and is very unassuming on set. Buthe is a big blonde Swedish dude so seriously how unassuming can yoube??? Then there’s the Slymeister…what can you say about this guy. Heis a visionary and risk taker who obviously loves what he does. Writing, directing and starring in a film of this scope is no easytask to be sure but he sees everything in his minds eye and what avision it is! The actors love him as a director and he seems verygenerous as an actor. We already know he can write. And he likes tokeep it real by doing most of his own stuntwork…which encourages theother actors to do the same. Pretty freakin amazing. He likes to keepthe vibe on set upbeat so our sound guys crank up the tunes…The Who,CCR, Tom Petty, Rick James, Led Zep, Stones etc etc etc…every once in awhile you’d hear him yell “keep up the momentum guys” as anotherexplosion goes off or another body goes flying. I love my life.
As for the crew I must say there are very few on this team I don’tlike but some of my faves are…Celestina who allows me to vent and ranton occasion, Wes the Visual Effects God, Amy who went to Jesus with mein Brazil, Audrey & Kent the prop masters, Mark the key grip, mygirl Shannon who runs basecamp and kept me sane in Brazil, the “hairgirls” Nikki and Kristi, Mustaffa the wonder of wardrobe, the crazyassed crafty guys Mike & Paul and almost all of of transpo…what ahilarious bunch of characters they are! And I cant forget my peeps inthe production office who always take care of me…Ashley, Amy and Casey. But my absolute faves are the beauttiful Giselle and Super PA Craig. Ifeel pretty lucky to be able to work with such a cool group.
Last night was interesting…we started with Jet Li in the back of apick up truck shooting, running and jumping then movedto the palace grounds for lots of gunfire and explosions. On more thanone occasion the ADs had to move crew out of the way so as not to gethit by exploding grenades…we also had to be mindful of the hundreds ofbullets being fired by nearly 100 extras and of course the totally outof control big mama Terry Crews blasts his way to hell with. The explosions looked pretty cool as well but the dust it kicks upcontains Fullers Earth which is NASTY NASTY NASTY…and hard to get offyour skin and clothes. And the fireballs our SFX team created weren’tany sissy fires…they went big…real big. Tonight we have more of thesame…Next week we enter the homestretch as we wrap (I think) on June26th. Looks like we are going to have some press visit us when weshoot the Somalian pirate scenes…we will also do theEPK interviews and we may have a visit from an online outlet – waitingfor confirmation. And did I mention we are shooting French hourstonight? No lunch break and we can only work 10 hours…yippeee…we haveto wrap by 6am…ok enough…more later. Oh and to you know who youare…don’t hold your breath…

June 12, 2009 by ethelmae
Mondayand Tuesday I am doing interviews with t he cast for the electronicpress kit and DVD. There are some questions i HAVE to ask – like tellme about your character, etc but since this is a unique movie I wantthe questions to be interesting and revealing. So I’m turning to you –if you could ask Sly, Jason, Jet, Terry, Dolph, Randy, Eric, Steve orGiselle a question ABOUT MAKING THE MOVIE OR THEIR CHARACTER what wouldit be. Respond only on the blog and I promise to read them all as longas you don’t get too verbose or off track. IF I use your question Iwill let the actor know it came from a fan…so thanks for helping…Iexpect big things from you guys!

Harry has seen THE EXPENDABLES in Action, Joking and making their film!
Holy nuts That Was Way f**king Cool!
Ok.I’ve been doing this for 13-14 years now. Been on a lot of big sets, met a lot of big stars. But you know what? Going into THE EXPENDABLESstage in New Orleans and seeing chairs for Sylvester Stallone, JasonStatham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews and Randy Couture. Itkinda melts your brain.
But then, when they all file in, one after another. Shaking your hand and greeting you. Your brain does a wicked freak out.
Wehave all collectively been panting like dogs in heat for this film.Everything we’ve heard has been golden. The photos of real men doingreal crazy nuts… it has made us giddy. And the rumors of folks in,maybe in, wished were in – well it has lit our imaginations – but thereal question is… Will it really rock?
So – today – without avery strong sleep history recently, I boarded a plane with Father Geekbound for New Orleans. The plane seemed to know how much I wanted toget there, as it arrived 28 minutes early!?!?! When the hell does thatever happen?
Ok, so then I found out that my call time for theset got moved up an hour and a half. So not only do I get to NewOrleans early, but I find out I get to set earlier. Then, once I get toset I find out that all the Expendables will be there! Sly, Jason, Jet,Dolph, Terry & Randy!
Now – for all the film that has shotin Louisiana – I haven’t been to a single set there. No, it wasn’t someprotest against the Louisiana Film Industry stealing Texas Films. No.For some reason it has just never worked out yet. I have to admit thatI was a little surprised by just how rough the facilities were. Itkinda looked like an abandoned warehouse, a bit dilapidated. The bigbuilding which held all the magic of THE EXPENDABLES, had mosquitoesand incredibly humid and uncomfortable sweaty conditions – which had alot of ladies griping, but given it was actually about 15 degreescooler than Austin – but with 90% humidity – it wasn’t so bad. BESIDES– would this be THE EXPENDABLES if everyone on set wasn’t sweating likethey were in a sauna?
I didn’t think so either.
Ok – so what did I see on set?
Whenwe entered the big stage area, I instantly noticed all the gear for TheExpendables – along with several machete and large scary knives. Allthe equipment looked well used and brutalized. Then there was a largeplane with that Expendables Raven perched upon a globe.
Pastthat was a stage with the interior of a Somali Pirate ship, where muchdeath and mayhem was conveyed to me as happening there! But not today.
Thenext staging area had the top of the ship – which is where all theshooting today was taking place. When I arrived, they were resettingand Sly was rehearsing and blocking what he was shooting tonight. I wasthirsty so we went to Craft Services – which is where I met ChadStahelski, he’s the Stunt Coordinator on THE EXPENDABLES, as well asbeing the martial arts choreographer and 2nd Unit Director on NINJAASSASSIN! We didn’t talk very long, but he’s been building up quite aresume of impressive films, and is also sometimes Keanu’s double in theMATRIX films.
The next person I met on set was Dolph Lundgren. Ihave to say… I was really giddy to meet Dolph. He was all dressed inhis gear, various weapons hanging off of him, all black – but with hisarms fully exposed. On his right arm was a tattoo of a traditional DiaDe Los Muertos sugar skull, complete with all the bright colors. On theother arm was the “Expendables” tattoo of the Raven perched on a Skull. All the members of Stallone’s team has the tattoo. Not necessarily inthe same place or size. Dolph struck me as being a bit shy. When Ibrought up that I liked DIRECT CONTACT, his latest Straight to DVDfilm, I think he thought I was kidding, till I started describing thescenes that I liked. And he became genuinely enthused that I hadactually watched it and retained what happened.
I get theimpression that Dolph doesn’t get much praise for his more recent work, but while these films he’s been a part of haven’t had the budgets orcasts that would take them out of the DVD realm – they are straightaction films shot in the old school manner. Something that folks likemyself and Vern appreciate.
Next, I get loaded up in thismotorized cart that steered like a rusty Model T. We were being shownthe site of many recent explosions. The “Palace” set. And folks, it gotblown up but good. Guard towers leveled. Craters. Blown up aircraft andvehicles. And by no means are they through blowing this nuts up!They’ve got two more weeks of shooting and a lot of what they’reshooting is the hard core action stuff.
It was at this point that I learned what would be being shot today.
Atthe beginning of THE EXPENDABLES there will be a rescue mission, wheresome Somali Pirates have kidnapped and are ransoming some folks – andSly and his team come in to pay them… and / or KILL THEM ALL. I’m notentirely sure.
What I saw seemed like the beginning of the scene. How it becomes action packed.
Nowthe day I was there wasn’t a very smooth day for Sly and crew. Thescene involved the EXPENDABLES having an elevated position above thepirates, which are in the hold below. Our guys have the drop on them –and first Randy Couture’s TOLL ROAD tosses a bag with allegedly $3million in it to the Pirates, but these pirates want more. And you canfeel the tension ramp up. Everyone grips their guns a bit tighter.Lasers finding their targets – when Dolph’s Gunnar Jensen bursts intothe scene – coming completely out of left field with a Pirate joke.Which basically ends in a grenade gun making a big boom.
Thenight was basically about making this scene work. Honestly, it wasn’tworking at the beginning or during the first 4 hours of shooting it.Lundgren’s tone was flat or loud – and Sly knew that Dolph could bringmore to it, if he pushed him. To Stallone – this scene was a gateway toLundgren’s character here. He’s a bit druggy, the rest of the team kindof doesn’t want him there anymore. He’s a bit burnt out and flakey asall f**k. Obviously – In a Somali Pirate HOSTAGE situation, telling aPirate joke… not the right move.
I think Dolph was havingtrouble with where the character was coming from, Dolph seems like avery bright guy, we all know about his history at MIT – but Sly waswanting the character to be the exact opposite of Dolph. Someone thatwas instinctually irrational – a loose cannon that seemed to not careabout the process. Someone with drug issues, that the rest of the teamdoesn’t trust – and right from the first scene, he wants the characterto sell it.
But at the beginning of the day, Dolph had a longway to go to get there with the character. I also felt that Dolph isn’ta jokey kind of guy. His rhythm wasn’t natural for telling the joke, until much later in the process.
It is at a moment like this ona film, where you really get a glimpse at a director and how he handlessituations like this. How he helps an actor to tap into something thatthey may not know they have in them. Because make no mistake about it,Sly absolutely believed in Dolph for making the scene work.
Thescene in question had the whole team there. Sly, Jason, Jet, Terry,Randy and Dolph. The scene was basically between 3 characters –Stallone’s Barney Ross, Dolph’s Gunnar Jensen and the lead SomaliPirate Amin Joseph, I think… though I know THE REVENANT’s Senyo Amoakuwas also on set doing his part! But the toughest part came to Dolph.
Afterthe first series of takes, it became evident that this scene was goingto take some work. Sly used the break to change his angles for the 5 orso cameras that were shooting the scene. As Dolph continued to wrestlewith the scene, Stallone decided before the midnight lunch break – tooffer up a series of quick improv’d lines for the rest of the team.
Almostwithout exception they were derogatory towards Dolph’s Gunnar. Sly toldDolph to mime his scene, while a series of close-ups of each characterwas busting on Gunnar’s gonads. I really liked this, as it gave Sly anout if Dolph couldn’t fully pull the scene off, but more than that – itshowed Dolph that it was possible that if he didn’t nail this scene –it would be divvied up amongst his co-stars… and no actor likes to seea big scene move away from them.
At lunch, Dolph became prettysullen. Having quiet talks with his associate. Not looking very happy, but mainly I feel he was beating himself up. You could tell that itmeant a lot to him to nail the scene. But it was tough for him.
Whenwe came back from lunch, we went right back into it. And for a briefperiod – Dolph was on the right track – but as the scene furtherdeveloped to the Grenade Launcher’s inclusion – Dolph shifted his focuson that a bit and kinda went fast and loose with the lines. Notenunciating things the way Stallone wanted and losing some intensity.Sly began to show his aggravation not at Dolph directly, but in furtherimproving his own dialogue – throwing in Captain Crunch and other moreviolent phrasing towards the Somali Pirate leader.
But he begancutting the second he heard something wrong, he’d cut Dolph off andtake it from the top. You could feel Dolph getting frustrated, but whatcame through the camera wasn’t frustration, but something growing moreand more unhinged. It was what Sly was looking for. And after twosuccessful takes they moved on to the live grenade gun firing. Whichwas loud and glorious!
This took a long time. During nearlyevery break – Jason Statham came over to chat. I’ve never met himbefore, though I have been a fan of his work. Jason’s career hasspanned AICN’s history. From LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS toSNATCH to THE TRANSPORTER, THE ITALIAN JOB, COLLATERAL, CELLULAR, CRANKand CRANK 2. Those are my faves. But he’s also been in some pretty nutsfilms, films that he himself has misgivings for – as they did not turnout as he imagined when looking at the page. He’s really hoping thatthis film with Jet Li will mark the saying, “Third Time’s The Charm,”as being a truism.
Jason asked about my thoughts on 3D, CG vs.Practical and a whole host of subjects. Sometimes a cigar tokingStallone would join our conversations – and it was all rather informal.I honestly don’t really like the “interview” process. It gets factoidsabout people, but rarely offers insight into who they are, or what theycare about. Much of what was on Jason’s mind was my thoughts on futurefilm technology that he didn’t have experience with yet… like 3D,Motion Capture, Piracy and so forth.
We talked about hisexperience on the film – and how for him it isn’t about a spectacularstunt he did, but really being a part of the team of remarkable slabsof man meat that were shooting this film. From most everyone that Italked to, it seemed that Jason and Sly have gotten along famously.Essentially stating that their character interaction has basicallybecome a “Buddy pic” relationship. Everyone felt this film is gonnabring out a lighter side to Jason, though Statham never stated thathimself.
I brought up how upset I was when the “geniuses” atScreen Gems veto’d John Carpenter’s casting of Jason Statham asDesolation Williams in GHOSTS OF MARS. Which sent Jason into expressinga great deal of love for John Carpenter. He really wanted that role, asit would have been his first big starring role in the U.S. Sadly, thesuited monkeys didn’t think he could carry a film. Something that overthe next subsequent years was proven dead wrong.
At one point inour conversation, Jason began worshipping at the altar of Rick Baker’sbrilliant transformation sequence in AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON andlonged to see a return to that sort of work, versus CG. We discussed alot. He really came across as a great guy. Especially when he attemptedto kill me in an elaborate series of moves that he was recently trainedin. So basically folks. Jason could’ve killed me had he wanted to winall you talkbackers over.
For those of you wanting to know aboutArnie’s involvement – I can only tell you that Arnold’s character hasan incredibly badass truck, that has been so customized that I dare notguess at a make or model, but it looked as though it probably sprungfrom a late 40s model truck. But that’s a wild guess.
Arnoldwill be shooting his scene at some point in Los Angeles, I hear, but hehasn’t shot his part yet. But I know a truck will be involved and thetruck is badass!
The main thing is – it seems that Sly is beingvery dedicated to making this film kick a lot of ass. He has beenworking to build each of the characters as their own unique beings.Giving them enough to work with so that they’re not just a bunch ofmuscles. And there are a BUNCH of muscles on that set.
RandyCouture’s forearm is one of the scariest forearms I’ve seen. Ripplinglike a harp of pain. Then there’s the giant, Terry Crews… That guylooks like the embodiment of John Henry! Inhumanly large shoulders andarms, but man – watching the costume people strapping on all his gear –he just got meaner and meaner looking. But then he’d flash a crazycharming smile. Jet Li, is probably my greatest regret of the trip. Ishook his hand, he smiled that awesome Jet Li smile, but he pretty muchhung out with his group of associates and friends. Dolph lookedawesome! His face has just so much character in it now and physicallyhe seems to be in excellent shape contrary to that beach vacation shotsthat were all the rage a few months back.
Now for the one pieceof BAD NEWS. Danny Trejo is not in the film. Sly met with him. Lovedhim. But just couldn’t really place him in the film where he felt Dannyfit – that would do the film service as well as Danny. But I get theidea that at a point in the future we’ll see them work together.
Thingsthat are still up in the air: No confirmed release date yet, just sometime in 2010. There’s also no ETA on a teaser trailer or full trailer.I’m very curious to see how this film plays out. As we all know – thisgroup of actors – individually have not always made the best of filmseach time out of the gate, but they are very intent on making this onecount. And I don’t think there’s a single one of us that are rootingagainst them. Because to us, they are certainly NOT expendable.

Thought this was interesting. There is a huge debate on the net at the moment on whether The Expendables should be R rated or pg 13. If its a throwback to the old eighties action flicks then it would make sense for it to be R rated but I'm not that bothered just as long as it's entertaining. I don't know, what does everyone here think?

I vote for PG-13.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was PG-13 for adventure violence and scary images. Sounds pretty similar.
Just so there's no nudity, heavy drug use, or real profanity.
Author:
jedijetmaste Time: 2009-6-21 01:54 AM
Yeah if its an adventure story like the Indy films then yes pg 13 would be perfect and maybe genius on Stallones part but if they are gonna cut it from an original R rated cut to fit a pg 13 format just for commercial reasons then I'm not so sure. I mean look at Terminator Salvation, Terminator 3 and Die Hard 4 -all suffered from these trims and cuts and where no where near as awesome as the first installments. I don't want it to be mindless carnage for the sake of it but I don't want Stallone to compromise his original cut to suit the studios.

I don't really care about the level of gore, it's not a selling point for me. I do appreciate it when the gore-level is in sync with the rest of the picture though. Indiana Jones doesn't need to have images of guys having their eyeballs getting shot out of there heads. The Expendables? Who knows! It sounds hardcore enough to justify a R-rating.
That being said. I think this is a movie that focuses on the 'fun' factor of violence a lot. It appears to want to emulate the 'vibe' of those late 80s action movies. Some of those weren't as brutal as other, but in my memory, most of them accompanied the running and gunning with a more then fair ammount of blood and severed limbs (Commando, anyone?). If that fits the tone of the movie (which I'm pretty sure it will because it honestly has 'hardcore badass' written all over it), and adds to the 'OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW BADASS THIS FILM IS!'-factor, I'm all for it.

Toned down language? Limited blood and gore? What...are they Oxford mercenaries using the Kings English and observing all the rules of the game in their spanking white cricket uniforms? Their job description appears to be [willing to kill or be killed to achieve the mission in exchange for money money money -- probably best if you have no family -- no benefits]. If this movie is what most of us expect---even if it is half of what most of us expect---it is by definition `R-Rated`. Most of those 80s action movies were rated R in their day. The question is: Is R in 1989 the equivalent of an R in 2009? Well I do not think so. We are way more hardened to film violence and vulgar language today than we were 20 years ago. But is the box office effect still the same? Yes. R limits the audience--now to 17 and older. Do theaters even bother to card kids these days? I think if they make it R-rated the box office will be solid and if it is a good kickass film then DVD sales will be through the roof. And if kids really want to see it all they need is dad to take them to the movies. Nice bonding time. If the producers make the mistake of smoothing out all the rough edges to make it PG--13 then they will be shooting themselves in the foot. This movie had better AT LEAST contain material that is inappropriate for children under 13! This aint supposed to be a Pixar flick. And this opinion is being expressed by a middle-aged woman who likes plot with her action (a la Die Hard -- Predator -- Terminator etc. -- all R-rated). But I still expect this to be R all the way.

Man, fuck PG-13 action movies. Action is about violence, and violence is hardcore. Don't suck up to the mainstream crowd by sugarcoating violence. Ugh! The Expendables needs to be rated R off the bat, not just on the DVD. It's about mercenaries sent to kill a South American dictator; which will involve a billion soldiers engaging in an epic battle with a lot of weapons and a lot of fists. Honestly, what part of that sounds like PG-13? Nothing! The action cannot be cut or censored just to satisfy a buncha soccermoms. It needs an R.

Come on, you've seen '80s action movies before, right? The six heroes face off against hundreds of Red Berets as they come out of tunnels around the statue. Of course, they wipe them off the face of the Earth, with some resulting explosions that set off car alarms as far as three miles away.
Imagine how many soldiers get shot in the face during that scene! They can't possibly cut away right when they get shot in the face just to go for a PG-13 rating. Kapow *cut* kapow *cut*... it needs to be kapow *headshot* *cut* *headshot* kapow *headshot* *headshot* *headshot* *crotchshot*, otherwise it'd be pretty unrealistic.

Thanks for the article JJM. Reading The Expendables in the same sentence as The Magnificent Seven and The Dirty Dozen gives me hope the movie has more than explosions going for it. I dont like that he mentioned Jackie as a potential replacement Expendable for a sequel. I hope they don/t kill off Jet/s character.

No Colombe. They did not say that. That was just what I speculated based on the knowledge that there is an axiom in Hollywood that IMO goes something like this: in an action ensemble cast the perfect blend of characters cannot exceed more than one Asian face unless the Asian ass-kicking actor is supplemented by an Asian computer nerd who is a peripheral character. That may sound like I am joking and I am but it really does seem like that is the rule. Actually it may also be true for ANY Hollywood film. It also applies to other minorities as well. Hollywood likes to serve up a nice variety pack with a little bit of white overload. So in this case when I see Jackie being offered up I assumed it is because Jet dies in The Expendables I. Obviously Jet is expendable. Sly is not. Maybe even Jason is not. The other characters are all expendable for sequel purposes.

June 26, 2009 by ethelmae
sohere we are with only 4 days of shooting left before we wrap it up andhead back to our lives. I’m feeling a little melancholy as I usually dowhen a film draws to a close but for some reason I’m really feeling iton this one. It has been such a cool experience being a part of thisfilm and working with this amazing cast and crew. But it aint over tilits over and we still have a whole lot of stuff to do…Jason throwingknives and kicking an interloper’s ass on a basketball court, a carcrash in a warehouse somewhere in NOLA with Dolph and Sly and a churchwith or without the character Church. On Thursday July 2 at 5:30pm Ibid adieu to the Crescent City and along with Miss Sadie head back toHermosa Beach.
last week was a busy one - Harry Knowles visitedthe set on Wednesday. I’d never met him before but I do read AICN on adaily basis. So when he came rolling in with his dad for some reason Iwas prepared for a high maintenance night. Thanks for the nicesurprise, Harry. He was the prefect guest – he wasn’t interested in thetraditional interview with the actors but I wish I had taped theconversations he had with Dolph, Jason, Sly etc…all Harry wanted to dowas soak it in and as you can tell from his post he was like a sponge!!And he didn’t rat me out when I scraped the side of the golf cart as Idrove through the metal doors leading to the palace courtyard set. Sothanks for that!! The next night we had journalists from Japan,Holland, France, the UK, IGN, UGO and the Times Picayune visit…onceagain great people who asked good questions and were very patient.Being on a set usually means a lot of sitting around waiting…oreating…and they did both. At around 3am they finally got theirinterviews with Sly, Jet, Terry, Dolph and Randy. too bad Jason hadalready left. at any rate…busy week as I also did interviews with mostof the cast that will be used for media outreach as well as on the DVD.I used some of the questions submitted by fans – it was a fun andinteresting process to hear the guys talk about their characters, aboutworking together as an ensemble, Sly as a director and the process as awhole. Gave me a whole new perspective while reminding me of things Ihad forgotten…and in spite of all the pregnant doging I’ve done overthe past 3 months about heat, bugs, rain, gators and whatever, I’ve hada pretty amazing experience.
last night we said good bye to Jetand Giselle. felt d**n weird. What can I say about Jet…he’s Jet Li – anamazing human being who is dedicating his life to making the world abetter place. His ONE FOUNDATION is his focus now and we all wish himthe best. As for Giselle, The Expendables marks her debut in a US film.Being the only female in a testosterone fueled environment was no easytask but aside from her stunning beauty she is a very strong andpowerful force. She does things in this film that will certainly makefilm goers take notice. She became my closest confident on this film –she will be missed.
Ok now for Church…I saw on severalwebsites that it is Bruce Willis but as I write this nothing has beenconfirmed about who will play Church. Someone PLEASE make a decisionhere people!!!
so here I sit on the back lot of the studio whilefires rage, Sly shoots the hell out of things and Randy Couturestealthily takes out a few palace guards. Terry is here too but hasn’tworked yet. Looks like Randy and Terry will wrap up tonight ortomorrow..then Steve Austin and Eric. Last to go will be Jason who iswith us til the bitter end which is only fitting as he was was in thefirst scene we shot so many weeks ago…
Earlier today on splinterunit Steve Austin and Eric Roberts went swimming – blown into the waterby a huge explosion. The first part of the scene was shot in Brazil –today we shot the aftermath. Ah movie magic.
factoid…we shot thesmilele sequence for the film tonight – the song playing during thescene has lyrics by Sly and music and additional lyrics by one of theguys from Godsmack…I think it was Sully but haven’t had a chance toconfirm with Sly…so please don’t quote me. What I do know is the songis pretty freakin perfect…
that’s it for now…I have about 3000 photos to go through but didn’t want you to think I forgot about you…
RIPFarrah – you fought a brave fight. And MIchael Jackson…you were onecrazy mother towards the end but your music will never be forgotten…sadending to an even sadder life…ah fame and fortune…
istill have a hard time believing that they dont know who church is, butare filming the scenes this week...I get a feeling they just dont wantto confirm until Bruce is on set..because it seems he's having a hardtime fitting it in between filming on "A couple of dicks"...im guessingif he doesnt make it this week, they will do like arnold and film afterprincipal photography sometime in July |

Another Jet interview. I don`t know. Jet says it`s not politics but it sounds to me like his life is pretty political. He may not be running for office but he certainly has to be politically correct.

By ethelmae
firstoff let’s cut the MJ chatter…Sly knew him, I never heard him call MJ apedophile although millions of folks around the world believe he wasand an MJ biopic is not on Sly’s radar…seriously.
As for Church– Sly’s back in LA getting ready to start the editing process, look atwhat he has and what he may still need, if anything, and then make aplan to shoot Church and Arnold. Church will be shot on the east coastor perhaps LA…that is still TBD. Church is male not female os we canend that speculation as well.
As for Arnold, if you go back tothe first press stattement I made regarding Arnold’s participation youwill note he was to play himself in a brief cameo that would be shot inLA. That has not changed although Sly has bantered about severalscenarios for Arnold that make his character more meaningful to thestory. He is not an Expendable and I highly doubt he will be runningaround in swat gear brandishing a weapon…but anyting can happen! Whenit happens you can be sure I will keep you posted.
BrittanyMurphy – in an early version of the script her role was quite big…butas time went on and Sly continuously reworked the script, her rolediminished and became a bit part. Sly ahs a tremendous amount ofrespect for her and wants to work with her – when you see the film youwill see what I mean. The role ended up being a glorified walk-on.
Asof yesterday Empire still hadn’t posted the photos on theirwebsite…since we gave them an exclusive run I can’t post it for a fewmore weeks…if I find it online I will share. Total Film, another UKoutlet will have an exclusive image of Jason in their August issue…

Sequels To Stallone's The Expendables Already Planned6 July 2009 12:01 PM, PDT
Hollywood hardman Sylvester Stallone can bank on a busy few years - movie bosses are already planning to turn his upcoming movie The Expendables into a franchise.
The action man has lined up an all-star cast, including martial arts star Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham and Eric Roberts, for the forthcoming film, which revolves around a group of mercenaries who set out to overthrow a South American dictator.
The movie has yet to even produce a trailer - but that's not stopped Millennium Films' studio executives from plotting sequels to the project.
Millennium Films' Avi Lernersays, "Definitely. We already have got some ideas about Expendablesnumber two, number three. Definitely, it's a franchise movie."

When Sylvester Stallone brings an explosive movie called 'The Expendables' to New Orleans, there's nothing small about it
by Mike Scott, Movie writer, The Times-Picayune

Sylvester Stallone, left, discussing a scene with Jason Statham on the New Orleans set of "The Expendables."
The bullet casings littering the New Orleans-area set of the Sylvester Stallone action flick "The Expendables" didn't seem quite right.
They were strewn across the deck of a faux cargo freighter dominating a significant chunk of the 500,000-square-foot Louisiana Film Studios facility in Elmwood. To the untrained eye, they appeared to be .22-caliber shells or something similarly small, littler than the tip of a man's pinkie finger.
And in this movie -- built around an oversized cast, shot upon oversized sets and utilizing oversized weapons -- .22 caliber is unacceptably puny. Because the $80 million "Expendables" is not small. It's really big.
"It is very, very, very hard," writer-director-actor Stallone said, describing the shoot during a recent break, still wearing the black fatigues his character wears in the movie. "This is the hardest film -- and I know everybody says that -- (but) this is unbelievably difficult. It's just tough. There's just so much action."
Coming from a pedigreed action-film veteran with such titles as "Rocky" and "Rambo" under his belt -- not to mention their combined eight sequels (so far) -- those words mean something.
On this particular hard day's night -- which started about 8 p.m. and was still going strong at 3 a.m. -- Stallone already had overseen the near-hanging of one bad guy, a scripted fist fight between martial artists Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren, a bit of comedic improvisation with Lundgren, and a handful of increasingly jarring explosions that echoed through the studio complex while most of the cast was grabbing a 2 a.m. "lunch."
So the action star, who turns 63 today, can be excused for propping himself on the front of a golf cart to chat with pasty reporter-types.
"This started out as a dark comedy; it started out as a satire," Stallone said. "Then we thought, 'Let's make a really hard R' -- then I go back. It constantly was being just brutally changed. It wasn't until a week before filming that I said, 'Let's just make it this kind of movie.'"
And what is "this kind of movie"?
It's a high-adrenaline, well-muscled buddy picture in which Stallone, Jason Statham, Li and their team of mercenaries -- which includes Lundgren, mixed-martial-arts champ Randy Couture and NFL-player-turned-actor Terry Crews -- tackle the types of missions normally reserved for people whose combat boots and MREs come compliments of Uncle Sam.
Their missions come to them through a grease-monkey intermediary named Tool (played by Mickey Rourke).
"Let's say we dug up 'The Wild Bunch' and gave them one more shot," Stallone said. "These guys don't fit in this kind of world. They are 'The Expendables.' That's why they're called that."
Before the production wrapped late last week after two months in the New Orleans area, the sets for "The Expendables" sprawled all over the Louisiana Film Studios complex, a former Winn-Dixie grocery warehouse that saw its conversion into a film studio rushed along to accommodate Stallone and company.
In one section of the warehouse was the aforementioned cargo freighter deck, perched atop a 10-foot wooden platform. In another area was a set constructed to resemble the ship's cavernous cargo hold. There's also a wingless military plane somewhere, painted in the logo of the ornithology outfit that serves as the cover for the movie's mercenary characters. And, looming in the darkness outside, there's an expansive palace complex that had taken a pyrotechnic beating on previous nights.
Impressive stuff, to be sure -- but nowhere near as impressive as the film's alpha-male cast. In addition to Stallone, Statham, Li, Lundgren, Crews, Couture and Rourke, it also includes former pro wrestler Steve Austin and Oscar nominee Eric Roberts. There are plans for a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as a double-secret cameo from another action star whom the producers are playing coy about naming (*cough*cough*Bruce Willis*).
"We've got some tough men in this movie," Stallone said. "I mean some bad-asses, trust me. The extras -- you think I'm joking? -- we've got extras in this movie that could conquer countries. I went to Brazil and got the baddest, toughest mercenary group. .¤.¤. It's staggering. Every one of them would just take all of us and snap us like spaghetti -- and they're extras."
Earlier in the night, and for much of the previous one, Stallone spent time choreographing the film's action-packed opening sequence, in which his titular team of mercenaries settles a hostage crisis with Somali pirates in the only way their know how: loudly.
("Don't be scared of the pirates," unit publicist Sheryl Main whispered unconvincingly to a group of set visitors.)
A motley band of mahogany hulks wearing tattered shirts and permanent scowls, the pirates are presumably among the bad-asses to whom Stallone was referring. When the cast and crew sat down for lunch, these guys had a table to themselves.
Even Crews -- who spent seven seasons as an NFL defensive end and linebacker -- found himself wide-eyed at the sheer scope of the action in "The Expendables."
"Everything is intimidating, dude," Crews said. "This is crazy."
Courtesy of Lionsgate
"This started out as a dark comedy; it started out as a satire," Stallone said of "The Expendables." "Then we thought, 'Let's make a really hard R' -- then I go back. It constantly was being just brutally changed. It wasn't until a week before filming that I said, 'Let's just make it this kind of movie.'"
In a neck-and-neck race with Li for the title of most congenial member of the "Expendables" cast, Crews might also be the biggest. On one biceps is the skull-and-raven tattoo worn by all the members of Stallone's fictional mercenary team. Statham jokes that the version on Crews' supersized arm is the one that usually goes on others' backs.
Those biceps weren't of much use, however, when the movie's pyrotechnics experts placed explosive charges throughout the palace courtyard, a duplicate of a real complex in Brazil at which the production filmed.
"When they blew this whole set up, I swear it looked like 9/11. It was scary," Crews said. "I was really concerned about everybody on the ground. You start to worry, when the dust settles, 'Is everybody going to be OK?' I mean, that was a major, major thing. That was so huge. It was bigger than anybody thought it was going to be. .¤.¤. It was like, 'Oh, wow. OK, I think we overdid it this time.'"
Overkill -- that seems to be a common theme on "The Expendables" set. It's the word Crews uses to describe his character's trademark weapon, an AA-12 semi-automatic shotgun. ("When I tell you it's the most insane thing you've ever seen -- each bullet, it arms itself with its own grenade," he said. "It's the king of overkill.")
It's also the word used by Lundgren, who's working with Stallone for the first time since playing rival boxer Ivan Drago in 1985's "Rocky IV," to describe his character. ("His special skill is overkill," Lundgren said. "He's got the biggest knife -- here's the sheath -- the biggest gun, which fires tank grenades that sort of vaporizes the person, liquefies them. When you hit him, it's game over.")
Stallone's character carries a pair of .45-caliber handguns. Statham's is a knife man. Li arms himself with steel-toed boots, which become lethal weapons when attached to his lightning-fast feet. And Couture's weapons are his hands.
Beneath it all, however, Stallone knows there has to be more than bloodied baddies to keep audiences engaged.
"Like 'Rocky,'¤" he said, referring to the career-defining 1976 movie that earned him Oscar nominations for acting and writing. "The whole thing about 'Rocky' wasn't about him boxing. It was about aging -- that was what made the movie. It wasn't him. It was about her -- him finding love, him making someone's life better -- and, before you know it, the audience identified with it."
In "The Expendables," he said he has created a group of characters who are hardened, heartless and invulnerable in combat. Off the battlefield, however, each is deeply flawed. "Every one of them has feet of clay," he said.
Strapping Statham's character , for example, has trouble relating to women; Stallone's has trouble relating to everybody; and Lundgren's is a homicidal maniac.
Although the movie, with its big action, big cast and sense of humor, is meant to be fun, Stallone hopes the undercurrent of vulnerability he's written into the major characters makes audiences connect with them. "If it's just about muscles and bullets, then it's a pretty limited thing," he said.
If such a connection is made, you can expect to see "The Expendables" back for more adventures.
"Definitely. We already have got some ideas about 'Expendables No. 2,' 'No. 3,'¤" said Millennium Films' Avi Lerner, a producer on the film. "Definitely, it's a franchise movie."
The cast's principals would jump at the chance to crack more skulls in a sequel -- assuming their characters are still around when the final credits roll on this first installment. The movie is called "The Expendables," after all.
Some even divulged that their characters survive the action.
And just like that, these "Expendables" don't seem very expendable after all.
"That's what I'm saying!" Crews said. "'The Renegotiatables' -- let's make that happen."

That's good that in this movie there will be humour , and that the different characters are near humans by their fragility or defects.
And about Jet ,apparently he wear ,in this movie, dangerous shoes !
I hope that this movie will be pleasant with little humour in action.

Qoute taking from Jets official facebook page.
"As you may remember I shot thisfilm "The Expendables" back in May and June of this year. Reallyexcited about this film of course, since it's my first time workingwith Sylvester Stallone, who wrote, directed, and starred.
Be prepared ...for a huge action flick with lots of bare knuckle fights, shootouts, and explosions.
Also in this one are Jason Statham, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, and Gary Daniels.
Hope you guys like the teaser one-sheet for my character."
