NOT A BUG: Suggestion with Friends/Fans option

After not accepting to be someones friend, why is it automatic that they are a fan? Should that not be their choice to be a fan or not? Some people don't even know they are a fan of people.

I was rejecting someone from being a friend today, they're automatically a fan of mine. I don't know the person, I never talked to them, and they have a bad mouth.

Why not just have it to where they don't be a fan of peoples after a friend rejection? That should
be their choice to fan someone.

I don't know, just a suggestion. But to me it sounds better that way.

Hi,

Ya,  we're still evaluating the friend/fan dynamic. The gist of the logic is that Fans are a one way relationship and you don't really have a choice in the sense that big stars don't get to pick and choose their fans. There's not a whole lot of difference between fans and regular users. Fanning is sort of like a book mark of users you want to keep track of.

But if a user is being a little overzealous there are a couple of things you can do:

1) pm the admin. We don't tolerate certain types of conduct and if users fall into theis category they will get warned and then banned if they continue.

2) entry privacy settings - it's possible to set blogs or albums to friends only so that even fans can't see them.

3) guestbook privacy settings - you can allow only friends or artists to post guestbook entries to yourself.

4) pm privacy - only allow friends or friends of friends to send you private messagess.

My sig.

Hey Eric,

Thanks for answering.

I know what you mean by us users having no choice of who fans us users. But there is a difference between an actual friend compared to "friend collecting". The person I'm referring to actually is a new user. Don't know crap about him, bad mouthed one of my friends and even hacked into her account. She said it this very morning.

I don't believe this person has any reason to befriend me at all. But only because I am a friend of hers and I'm easy to get at because of this second friend thingy....

I don't know, but as I said before, what about just not having it at all on automatic fanning when they try to add you as a friend. They should have that option of becoming a fan, not automatically become one.

I know, it's a hassle for me to put all my private blogs on private when I do have friends that are a fan, more so of a friend of mine. I do not want to disclude them.

Aggg...this is giving me a headache.

Didn't know option 3 was available. That's interesting though.

They automatically become a fan of yours so that your entries can be a part of their subscriptions in their My Feeds while they're waiting for you to confirm the friend request. This makes sense because they're interested in reading your entries whether or not you're a real friend or not.

If you reject their friend request (perhaps you don't really know them) they STILL remain a fan -- just beacuse you reject their friend request doesn't mean that they aren't still interested in remaining subscribed to your profile.

I think the logic here makes sense.

In regards to receiving unnecessary friend requests -- we're working on better monitoring suspicious behavior, but the best way to help us out is to send us a message when there's anyone who's doing inappropriate stuff.
