hmmmm, why the white face?

when i first saw this pic at the jackie chan site i was wondered why exactly terence's face was painted white. can anyone shed some light on this for me. it doesn't seem to make any sence in the plot of the film from what i have read.

Yea, why is Terences face painted white and his hair is all white? Whats his role in this?
