wow.  i'm glad some friends talked me into going to see ping pong playa.  it's a real fun movie.  so fun in fact i didn't mind driving out to glendale to see it even though it's playing just down the street from me in alhambra.

i'm always afraid to see stuff featuring asian americans and analyzing asian american stereotypes.  either they're disconnected to their audience by just not being realistic, having nothing in common with them, or there's too much asian references for a regular person to get. well, there's a lot of chinese references in this movie, there's a lot of chinese language and chinglish spoken in the movie, but honestly, almost anyone watching this movie can understand it... at least the universal ideas of being there for your family, a family overachiever, and  a family imbicile with something to live up to....

if you haven't seen it yet, find time.  i think it was well worth my $11

oh, and it features music by far east movement.  that rocked  :)

a few things that have cheesed me off about these olympic games has to do with the coverage by NBC (aside from the shitty job of the opening ceremony coverage).... too much boxing, too much waterpolo, not enough coverage on non US athletes doing well... (usain who? fastest man in the world? no clue...)

but the biggest thing that has really pissed me off has been the commentators for gymnastics.  now i understand that the color commentary has to be there to explain things, but they are unnecessarily saying soo much that pretty much makes their own headlines of conspiracy, unfair judging, altered documents, etc...

i've practiced wushu for many years and have gone to many competitions.  wushu has very subjective scoring, much like gymnastics and figure skating.  over the years, i've heard many complaints at competitions where people complain "this person was better than that person so should have won.  he/she was robbed"  "these judges are stupid"  blah blah blah...  sometimes those comments are made out of ignorance, sometimes those comments are right on.  but it comes down to the athletes and their coaches and their team to work out all that and fight for what's right.  it's not the commentators job to broadcast to the world how bad everything is based on their personal opinions.  it's almost like they want all of the US to feel the US girls gymnastics team was robbed by china.

oh wow.... liu xiang withdrew from competition due to injury...  aside from USA vs China in basketball, this was a major highlight event.  so sad.  i wish him the best.  i just hope people understand him and his coach's decision (assuming it's a real injury..hehe).  athletes are human afterall...

  • NBC sucks ass

    Saturday, Aug 9, 2008 4:53PM / Standard Entry

ok, NBC sucks when it comes to showing the olympic ceremonies.... i watched the full 4 hours and i just hated all the commercial interruptions.  so i decided to look up the ceremony on bittorrent and found the BBC version.  IT'S SO MUCH BETTER.  uninterrupted by commercials, angles are better (for the most part), and the presentation is more respectful of the artistry of the ceremony.  not only that, but the NBC telecast CUT OUT MAJOR TRANSITIONS between the acts!  those of you that saw only the NBC version, i highly suggest downloading another HD version and enjoying that one instead.  the procession will make a lot more sense.

all in all though, this was an incredible showing.  zhang yimou is genius to have created this spectacle.  it was so beautiful that i actually teared up on more than one occasion.

how to guarantee that you will be mauled by a mountain lion?  do what this dumbass claims to have done....

    http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/orange_county&id=6310231

make sure to watch the video....  he sounds stoned..haha

A hiker was injured by a mountain lion after allegedly petting one of three cubs near Portola Hills in Orange County.

Kevin Lassiter, 47, was out for a walk near the Borrego Trail in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park when he allegedly came across three mountain lion cubs at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Lassiter is from Foothill Ranch and says he hikes in the area quite frequently. But this time the hike ended with a trip to the hospital. Lassiter suffered minor injuries and has since been released.

Lassiter spoke first to Eyewitness News.

"I'm doing all right," said Lassiter. "I saw the cubs, but I didn't see her at first. And I walked and I said, 'Oh, I want to pet this kitty.' And here she comes out and ... I went to touch the kitty ... and she just pawed me ... She just clawed me is what she did. In other words, 'Back away from my kittens.'"

"The victim is very fortunate that he was not hurt worse than he was by the mother mountain lion," said Jim Amormino, Orange County Sheriff's Department.

A wildlife specialist with the Department of Fish and Game says Lassiter's wound is not consistent with an injury from a mountain lion attack. Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says if Lassiter is found to have filed a false report, sheriff's officials will look to prosecute him.

The attack allegedly happened about a mile into the park, a popular spot for hikers and bikers. However, there are signs warning of mountain lions everywhere.

"If you're going to go up and pet one, that's really asking for it," said cyclist Scott Van Dell.

"Not too smart," said cyclist Dave Katanich. "I mean, it's a wild animal. Especially a mother with their babies ... You don't want to get between that -- any wild animal that has its offspring with them."

Several miles away, in January 2004, a mountain lion killed 35-year-old cyclist Mark Jeffrey Reynolds. That mountain lion also seriously injured another cyclist, Anne Hjelle. The 110-pound mountain lion in that case was killed.

The park was closed on Wednesday while authorities looked for the mountain lion and the cubs.

Authorities say Lassiter allegedly provoked the attack when he touched the cubs. The mother was just trying to protect her offspring.

Authorities also say if they do find the mountain lion and its cubs, they will tranquilize them and take them to a sanctuary in San Diego because they have had human contact.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
