ZI WEI YUAN
2009-08-21 4:57PM / 標準BLOG
Last week, I was trying to think of a cool place to take Jun for dinner when my buddy Lewis suggested we go to a steamboat/hot pot restaurant called Zi Wei Yuan in Butterworth.
Now I’m not really familiar with places on the mainland in Penang, but Lewis assured me this place was dope and so I said, “Why not?” and we made the drive over.
And dope it was.
When you reach the restaurant, you basically tell the waitresses how many people you have and they will bring the correct amount of food accordingly. You can order other stuff that you like too, like mantis prawns, cuttlefish, pork balls, fish balls, tofu and many, many other things.
The star of the restaurant however, is not the food, but the soup that you cook the food in.
Zi Wei Yuan has the best steamboat/hot pot soup I have ever tasted in my life.
The soup is a special fish broth that the restaurant prepares themselves and they chuck pieces of fried fish in it to give it an extra kick. The whole pot is kept hot by a charcoal fire during your dinner, which gives the food an extra flavour that you simply cannot get from gas stoves.
Lewis, our food guide for the evening.
Jun was VERY popular with all the waitresses at Zi Wei Yuan. Apparently they don’t get to feast their eyes on suave Japanese guys very often.
Here’s where they pre-heat your soup before bringing it to your table. Check out the huge chunks of fish in there!
This is the fried fish they put into your hot pot.
I couldn’t figure out what this was but if it makes the soup taste better then please put more in.
When we arrived at the restaurant it was fully packed but by the time we finished most of the people had left but make no mistake, Zi Wei Yuan is packed every day.
One more photo of the hot pot for good measure. I drank at least 10 bowls of the soup before calling it a day. I really didn’t want to stop drinking the soup but I just couldn’t fit anymore liquid into my stomach.
I almost wanted to do the Roman-thing and puke everything up so I could eat everything all over again but luckily I managed to restrain myself.
Damn that soup is like crack, yo!

JUN TATESAWA
2009-08-17 2:19PM / 標準BLOG
Everyone, I’d like you to meet Jun Tatesawa - prized consultant for the shadow conglomerate known as the London Diamond Gallery.
Never heard of the London Diamond Gallery? Well, that’s exactly the way they want it. Notoriously underground and only known to the most savvy of jewellery collectors around the world, LDG epitomizes the word exclusive.
How exclusive? How about this – their showroom in Tokyo (which has been in business for more than 30 years) is invitation-only and not open to the public. That means they will ONLY open their doors to you if you are an existing customer or referred to them by TWO existing customers.
This year however, LDG has decided to come out from behind the diamond curtain and make its presence known to the general public. Very quickly, they have set up showrooms in strategic locations around Asia and are looking to expand their retail arm exponentially within the next 24-months.
I’m fortunate to be part of this expansion plan as I am helping them to formulate their new global marketing strategies.
It shouldn’t be too hard since after all, they are the company that supplies diamonds to Tiffany & Co. and Gucci to name a few.
Oh yeah, they also work with another joaillier you might have heard of – Cartier.
So I’ve been meeting/chilling with Jun every day and working on some ideas that we will put into action soon. The cool thing is that Jun is a very mellow guy and all our meetings take place in very informal situations and the vibe is very relaxed.
I’ve also been doing my best to take Jun to sample all the amazing food that we have here in Penang.
You’ll be seeing a lot more of Tatesawa-san on my blog in the coming months.
On a totally different note – half-way through my meeting with Jun, our friend Tamago-chan dropped in to tell us an amusing story about a guy who’s been taking photos of himself wearing What’s Good?/Dope stuff and telling everyone that I shot those photos for a Dope photoshoot. He also told Tamago-chan that he was participating in a Dope photoshoot last week in Port Dickson (I assure you, there wasn’t one)
Apparently this is the only way he gets laid.
