My daughter's project about Faith Ringgold, the artist

    "If One Can Anyone Can
All you Gotta Do Is Try"
    her motto

These pictures are of my daughter Sha and her school project about the artist Faith Ringgold. Sha's school has this really neat "wax museum" project that the 5th grade does every year. They have to pick a famous person in our history (the U.S.) and research, make a collage board, write a report, make things that represent or show what the person did, and the best part: pretend to be a wax statue of the person.

Sha had picked out Pocahontas, but when she came home she said she got Faith Ringgold because someone else got Pocahontas. We didn't know much about her except that she was an artist and made quilts (or so we thought). While researching we found out she didn't make quilts, she made quilt frames for her canvased art as part of the completed art work, which are called
story quilts. She had seen this done in Tibetan paintings, called tankas, when she had visited Tibet.

Her work is unbelievably intricate, beautifully colored, and tell a story.
She also made dolls, sculptures, is a writer, and is still a professor at The University of California, San Diego. She's won over 75 awards, fellowships, citations and honors for her work. Though she graduated from college in 1955, became an art teacher in the New York public school system (until 1973), had exhibitions all over the world, she did not receive "official representation" with a gallery (the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery) until 1986.

I loved this project more then Sha because I was introduced to not just another artist and art style. What this woman did for African Americans, women, artists considered outside the "mainstream" and the entire artistic community is amazing. The barriers she broke through, created change and opened doors for artists of every race,
sex, religion, age, and style. In my opinion without her and other artists of her time, I wouldn't be writing this now, on this site dedicated to artists.

Thanks for reading, have a great day!
ps If you want to see more of her work here's the link to her official web site.

After I decided to be an artist, the first thing I had to believe was that I, a black women, could be on the art scene without sacrificing one iota of my blackness, or my femaleness, or my humanity.

Nice job!  It kind of worked out that your girl didn't get Pocahontas.  Otherwise she wouldn't have gotten to learn about such an amazing and inspirational artist and woman.  Thanks so much for sharing with us :)
