This entry has been long overdue. I've gotten caught up with the craziness of ophthalmology rotation and a new relationship. But...I'm back! At least until the next clerkship rotation....

I've come to realize just how much I like them eyeballs. Gross, you say? Nahhhhhh dude, they're soooo cool!! Such small organs but with an exquisite complexity of architecture and so vital to an individual's quality of life...the eyes are truly amazing structures.

I am finally nearing an end to the application process. What relief! I really do hope I land a residency position in California. Ophthalmology is extremely competitive so I have my concerns. If I end up in Texas or on the east coast, you guys will visit me yah?

Life is good right now. We should all drink less, play more poker, and expand our horizons.

  • Moving!

    Wednesday, May 30, 2007 10:47PM / Members only

Yes, I am getting ready to move out of my current 2 bedroom apartment finally. Good riddance! As some of you may know, I hated living here. It gets incredibly hot when it's hot outside. I literally woke up in a puddle of perspiration on one fine sunny day. On the other end of the spectrum, when it's cold, it's friggin' cold, so cold that at times I'd wake up in the middle of the night shivering with my forehead as warm as an icecube.

And there's the whole roommate issue of course. Funny that we didn't hangout for the past 3 years and we were completely on good terms but now that we've started to become closer, issues have arisen. Personal space. I hate it when people decide to invade it. Drinking your diet coke and liquor. Eating your food. Using all your face wash. Borrowing purses when you didn't get permission prior. Going into your room when you're not there to use your computer and not immediately getting up to leave when you come home. I don't mind sharing at all but there are certain boundaries you don't cross or at least ask before attempting to do so.

Anyways, no more roomies! I'm looking at one bedrooms and studios, preferably in inner sunset, close to school. I'm hoping to move by mid-June. Come visit!

  • Creepy Boys

    Thursday, May 17, 2007 11:30PM / Members only

Okay, I have two very weird guy stories to tell.

First one is about this guy I met last year while clubbing in NYC for Lily's birthday. I had just broken up not too long ago and was feeling a little depressed. I met this guy and started dancing with him. He was nice and pretty cute and all but I felt a little disgusted afterwards because it was too soon after a breakup to be dancing with another guy in close proximity. We exchange numbers because he wants to take me to brunch the following morning before I go home to SF. Since I felt totally grossed out later on, I don't pick up his calls the next day. Back in SF, he calls me a few times and again, I don't pick up. He msgs me on friendster and of course, I don't reply. Sticky yes but not completely psycho...yet. So he msgs me on friendster today saying that he'll be in SF this weekend and hasn't seen me in 18 months and wants to grab lunch or dinner. Now THAT is totally creepy.

Yesterday I met an old man while out at 111 Minna with the girls. This dude keeps telling us to go to Harlot, which we were planning on doing anyways. So at Harlot, he keeps hanging around us and starts telling me about how he has mind-blowing sex with women who have IQs of 180+. That weirded me out a bit. I mean, this guy is obviously European and obviously very...um, aged. He proceeds to ask me to lunch/dinner and I proceed to ask him at point blank, "just how old are you??" He tells me to guess. I say "57." He tells me he's 38. Right. Mabel comments to me later, "if he's 38, then I'm 2 years old."  Anyways I tell him that I may or may not go eat with him and he said that he would only ask for my number if i was mature enough to be sure that I would, instead of being wishy-washy and fickle. I told him if he calls, there's only a 50% chance I'd pick up. He says, "okay, then I won't ask for your number." What a weird conversation to have with a guy. In any case, an hour later, he wants to buy us drinks and we were all like "it's a waste of time! don't waste your money" but he buys me one anyways. Kinda cute huh? in a grandfatherly, pedophilistic way...

On a different note, I eat WAY too much after I drink. It's ridiculous. Sun Hong Kong after Harlot was BAD for my diet. I ate so much that I don't think I can eat breakfast and lunch today....and alcohol + high sodium levels = bloated bloated Jenn. Nice.

  • Camping this past weekend

    Wednesday, May 16, 2007 1:54PM / Members only

Weeeeee! Camping was super duper fun! I totally did not think that camping with a mere group of 5, hiking around in the dark with lbs and lbs of gear and having not a clue whether we were going the right way, huffing and puffing until it was impossible to continue to move would be so completely fulfilling.  Sounds kinda masochistic, non? But the arduous trek, the tears, the pain, it all contributed to such bliss when we reached our final destination at the beautiful Lake Sonoma. It kinda felt like we were lost desert travelers finally reaching an oasis to regenerate our very weary souls and battered bodies.

In any case, our trip can be summed up with a bit of kayaking, fishing (for some of us), cooking and eating random foods (steak, drumsticks, rubbery eggs made from powder in a package, gooey cheesecake from a package as well, etc.), drinking, water balloon attacks, frisbee, swimming in the lake, attempts to coerce the consumption of worms (don't ask), and making fire fire fire! This trip further confirmed that I love collecting branches to start fires. If Kitty's main contribution and skill is cooking, mine would be tree branch attacking/yanking.

Best part of the trip for me? I must say it was probably on Saturday night when we drank a little, played some drinking games, and GORGED on smores and white cheddar cheezits, followed by my wandering into the darkness in a half-sober state to stargaze. I don't know much bout constellations but nothing is more beautiful than staring up into a starry night, feeling the utter solitude, the momentary insignificance of our existence. Good times.

  • Hello!

    Tuesday, May 8, 2007 4:57PM / Members only

Wow. This is my first time blogging! I've always been way too lazy to do this but hey, for Pat and Stephen, why not?

Hm..what am I supposed to write on here??

    Let's see...

So this past weekend was extremely busy and fun. Broomballing was awesome! At one point, though, I was freaking out because I organized the event and someone got injured, with a facial laceration that had to be taken care of in the ED. Thank God she got away with some simple dermabond application (as opposed to stitches). People seemed to have fun too, different groups that didn't necessarily know each other at all but coming together without worries about work or school, completely focused only on whacking the sh#$ out of the ball. Good times! Let's do it again.

Paintballed for the 2nd time as well this past weekend. It was also a lot of fun and not as painful as I remembered it to be. It is extremely frustrating, however, when you get taken out 10 seconds into the game, while scrambling for a position behind a barrier, before you even have the chance to run around and wreak havoc.  And yes, I so desperately wanted to wreak some major havoc, cause some serious pain. Just kidding. Sort of.

Went out to Icon Lounge the same evening of paintballing for a bday party. My big sib was visiting from the east coast so I met up with him and some other friends there. And what a night it was. I had a helluva time watchin my classmates get drunk and ever-so freaky and stage-happy. Who said med students don't know how to party?

I started research today! I'll be in lab for the next 2 months doing benchwork, trying to figure out a way to make genetic testing for retinoblastoma (eye tumor) a more sensitive test. I'm excited =) Pipetting, centrifuging, etc is so repetitive but in that way, is almost therapeutic. It's sooo nice to be back in the lab after this past year of rotation after rotation. No more hierarchy, sucking up, pretending to know more than you do.....well, at least for awhile....
