  • Swimming at the W and My Childhood Friend's Wedding Dinner

    Monday, Aug 24, 2009 12:39AM / Standard Entry

The swimming pool and whirlpool at the W Hotel Hong Kong is located on the 76th floor, where you get a magnificent view of Hong Kong from above.

The swimming pool offered views of Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon Tong (and the rest of Kowloon) while the whirlpool offered views of Sheung Wan/ Pokfulam.

Fabulous views I stayed there until my fingers/ skin were all prune-y!  Really didn't want to leave...

And tonight, I went to a wedding dinner to celebrate the wedding of one of my childhood friends from Toronto (now living in Vancouver!).

She was sooo cold (very typical in HK- WHY do they always crank up the air con??? )...

I sat with a few friends (also relocated from Toronto to Hong Kong/ Macau) whom I've known since I was like 5! It's always nice to see familiar faces at weddings!

  • "Let me see your duckies..." ;)

    Thursday, Aug 13, 2009 7:34PM / Standard Entry

I have patients who are children and it's so hard to examine them sometimes. They absolutely HATE the ear exam (looking into their ear with the otoscope) and they'll do everything to squirm out of it. They're usually also wary about opening their mouth and saying AHHHH to a complete stranger...

As a result, I try to make things fun. To get children to open their mouths, I always focus on their teeth. "Ohhh, look at those nice teeth you have!" or "Oh WOW, do you brush your teeth? They're so clean and pretty!" and then, "Let me take a closer look with my light!"...

10 out of 10 times, the kids will happily open their mouths for me to look inside (and their parents will have a smile of relief on their faces. No fusses this time.  ).

Recently, I saw a Mandarin- and English-speaking 2-year-old. Thinking that I've got my Mandarin down (), I asked him to open his mouth to show me his teeth. He obliged shyly, and his mother laughed before telling me, "Doctor, you just asked him to open his mouth to show you his duckies!"

A dear friend celebrated her 30th birthday last week. I surprised her by sending cupcakes to her office on her birthday.  I love this "Complete Deelite" place. So easy to order and send out sweets to loved ones. Not the healthiest, but definitely yummy! Anyone who wants to buy delicious cupcakes in Hong Kong can come here: http://www.completedeelite.com/

  • WHAT WOULD YOU DO???

    Friday, Aug 7, 2009 5:51PM / Standard Entry

What would you do if you were pregnant OR if your wife was pregnant and you were diagnosed with CANCER??? Today, I saw my 2nd such patient case in 3 months. My 1st case was of a woman in her thirties with a rare form of bone cancer. She was diagnosed while she was pregnant with her THIRD child  (The specialists kept thinking it was a cyst in her inner thigh and kept removing it- It kept coming back... turned out it was cancer...). My 2nd case is a guy. He found out he had throat cancer yesterday. His wife is expecting a baby (their second child) in the next few days

Hong Kong had another typhoon this week. I caught the rain that day (or was it the day before the typhoon? It's been raining cats and dogs this entire week- but the sun finally peaked out from the clouds today.):

I wish I caught this on video. The water was like THUNDERING down the stair alleyway...

Do you like swimming in the rain? Some of my neighbours apparently do.

It was just spitting at first... and then it started raining. Hard.

For me, on rainy days, I prefer to stay home with Bella. She LOVES tummy rubs.
    After a tummy rub...

This is Bella enjoying a tummy rub in the wee hours of morning!

  • Hong Kong Going Green!

    Tuesday, Aug 4, 2009 7:49PM / Standard Entry

Not sure if Canada has caught up yet (I've left for over one year! ), but in Hong Kong, one needs to pay 50 cents for each plastic bag now at supermarkets and the like. I think it's great Everyone is using reusable or cloth bags and I think Hong Kongers on average are more aware of how our actions affect our environment. They should've done this a lot earlier!...

Are Canadians and Americans bringing their own bags to shop yet?

On the weekend, we walked a trail in Tai Tam. What a treat There was NO ONE on the trail, we were surrounded by greens, and the views were absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I felt like I was back in Canada, in the middle of some forest (but with mountains and such!).  It didn't feel like Hong Kong at all (no Causeway Bay crowds, no sound of buses, cars, trams, construction...)- There was no one there but us and nature! The best part was- it was ONLY 15 minutes away from home!

    Here are some photos:

We were sweating before we started! 37 degrees!

Even Bella was sweating her tongue out!

  • FLAT ABS, TONED BUNS- Here we come!!!

    Friday, Jul 31, 2009 4:31PM / Standard Entry

I've been busy the past week creating a revolutionary weight management program. Not only is it going to address diet, portion control, exercise, lifestyle factors and the like, but I will also assess any possible medical conditions (such as depression or thyroid problems) and nutritional deficiencies that may be causing weight gain or hindering weight loss. I'll use natural medicines to control food cravings, monitor the body's pH level and also help the body detoxify in the process. I'm also including a patented product which has gone through many years of intensive clinical and laboratory research (at the University of Toronto in collaboration with the Canadian Center for Functional Medicine). Through this program I plan to help patients take control of their weight to decrease their risk of disease (MANY illnesses are associated with obesity ).

I'm super excited about it and I'm working hard to iron out the final details. In the meantime, I'm trying to keep fit myself!  I'm happy to say I've lost 3 of the 6-8 pounds I've gained since arriving in Hong Kong. Yipppeeeeee!!!

I (think I) still look like this (from last summer): WHEW!

So yeah, now I'm sharpening my abilities to count calories wherever I go (I think I'm pretty good. I can eyeball a food and give the approximate calories ).

Can anyone tell me how many calories are in a 6-inch Hawaiian pizza and garden salad with vinaigrette???

The answer: too many if you want to lose weight!  If you don't, it's all good.

(That was my lunch yesterday! Yes, I like going to ThreeSixty for lunch. )
