  • Have you ridden on the MTR?

The MTR is Hong Kong's mass transit system for the public comprised of train (subway), light rail and airport express services.  There are at least 9 different lines connecting to form a complex network. Not only is it clean (I feel comfortable dressed in my work clothes and walking around in heels knowing I won't stain anything) and convenient (you just swipe a money-loaded card, called the OCTOPUS card, at every entry/ exit gate so you never need to fumble with cash or change), but there are glass barriers which prevent people from falling (committing suicide) on the tracks! Clever idea, eh?

As you can see below, it really is... CLEAN!!! Nice glass barriers, right?

NOT ONLY THAT... But one can watch TV (OK, just commercials or movie trailers) while waiting for the next train AND there are billboards featuring hot commodities like the one below...

(Raymond Lam 林峰, Daniel Wu 吳彥祖 and Kevin Cheng 鄭嘉穎)

(Imagine a tiring or BAD day at work. You're taking the MTR home and these guys greet you as you wait for the train... Beats the 1 hour commute by car characterized by traffic congestion, eh...)

The MTR is seldom ever late or delayed. There are digital signs on the platform telling you when the next train will arrive. Its automated voice system first speaks in Cantonese, then Mandarin, then English. Sometimes, between stops, it will even tell you which doors (left or right) will open at the next station.
The MTR definitely made an impression on me the first time I took it...

Have you ridden on the MTR yet?

yes, i had. i was impressed by the cleaniness of the mtr.. which was the opposite spectrum of the nyc subway. phew! the glass barrier is clever, u dont have to wait long for trains.. but one inconvienient is that it's not 24hrs.

I'm going 2 ride 1 soon.. he he he.  In Malaysia it's called LRT but not all the stations are fitted with glass barriers & during peak hours it's packed like sardines.  I can make comparisons when I ride on 1 soon.

I like MTR. SF's BART is pretty grimy. Wish BART would have the cleaner metal/plastic seating, uh, not to mention cleaner stations. Actually, the level where you go through the "turnstiles" are clean but the boarding level is kinda dusty. MTRs LCDs and bright billboards kinda knock you in the eyeballs though.

yea, I have to agree the MTR is awesome... definitely clean and most importantly, they are on time... the public transportation in HK is something I miss too... the public transportation here is definitely NOT anywhere near what it's like in HK...

Yeah, I agree, the MTR is the best mass transit I've ever been on. There are no bums or heroin addicts on it. The only thing I don't like is when I sit on the end of the row next to the glass partition. People lean against the glass and there is a crack where their ass pokes through and touches me when I'm sitting. Ewwwwww.

MTR is much better than TTC.

i even find myself repeating these words when i step out of a subway station.

    ding ding-ding ding!
    ching gang ngak foo sau
    qing zhua jing fu shou
    please hold onto the handrail.
