  • Winter Trip

    Sunday, Dec 30, 2007 4:49PM / Members only

I’m finally back from my one week’s vacation in Vancouver, British Columbia. This was a family trip that included hubby and my immediate family. We are so Chinese-d out! Our travel intentions to B.C. besides skiing, it was for the deliciously well known Chinese food there. We had all the opportunity in the world to taste everything that we missed out last time when we visited. We had Chinese everyday for lunch and dinner, so we’re chinked out now! We want some burgers and pizzas now. Anyway, here are some cheers and jeers that I wanted to point out during my trip:

    Jeers

Whistler, B.C.: Our plan was to go to Whistler to ski, but hubby got sick on the day we were suppose to leave for Whistler; therefore, we never went. Time was limited since the drive from Vancouver to Whistler is 2 hrs. (depending on the weather condition, it can be more.)

Weather: The winter time in Vancouver is always raining and dark. It gets dark at 4:30pm and it drizzled half of the time when we were there. But that didn’t prevent us from going out or doing things. A lot of girls would wear these colorful cute rain boots as a fashion for the wet winter season there.

    Cheers

Grouse Mountain: Although, we couldn’t ski in Whistler, we got to spend Christmas Day at Grouse Mountain snowboarding on the snowy mountain. At first, I was hesitant about this winter sport because I was tired out by the lines. We had to wait in lines for the forms, snow boots, and skis/boards. At the same time, I was all bundled up in layers of thermals/shirts/pants/jackets. But after we got our boards, we went out and played in the snow and it was amazing. It was so beautiful and white! All the pine trees were coated with powdery snow, definitely very Christmas-y.

Dim Sum: The Richmond Vancouver area serving some of the best dim sum in town is not an uncommon thing because the Chinese chefs are from Hong Kong. The shrimp dumpling was so crunchy and fresh. However, there was one dish that went beyond my expectation, the steamed egg yolk bun. We’ve all had the white round bun with a yellowish/orange custard filling before, but this one was a little different, at least to me. When I break apart the bun, the golden cream filling slowly drips out like lava. I bite into it and I get this grainy texture from the yolk. The filling was very aromatic and had the perfect sweetness to it. The direct Chinese translation to it is “dripping sand bun,” something like that. I guess the sand part comes from the grainy texture of the yolk, like sand.

Sammi’s Show Mi Blu Ray: Checked out the video stores there and bought myself Sammi’s concert, my first Chinese Blu Ray. The concert seems more interesting in blu ray. Oh, this is for Peachey: they had a HMV store there and remember me asking you about the store? Well, they had several there too.

Air Hair Salon: Hubby and little brother wanted to color and cut their hair at this local Japanese owned and operated hair salon. It was hubby’s second time going and he made plans to go again this time. Little sister and I accompanied the boys to the salon. Their slogan is “we come from Japan.” Totally Japanese, they can barely speak English, but we were able to communicate with them by using single English words and “pointing.” Ekin Cheng visited the store as well because they put his photo with the salon owner on their desktop background. Little brother was so fascinated by how meticulous the hair stylists were with his hair. They take their time cutting, measuring, and coloring every strands of his hair making sure not one strand was left out. They offered a cushion to put under his neck when they’re washing his hair so there is support for the neck. Also, a towel will go over his eyes so he can relax the eyes while they massage his head while washing it. Instead of bring you just water or soda, they offer each client a menu of drinks to choose from, like sweet chamomile to hot chocolate for the winter.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Sorry if I didn’t get a chance to drop by your guestbook to wish you a Merry Christmas. Although, I had access to a computer during my trip, but I was just not in the mood to get with my cyber world.

    Happy New Year peeps!!

Pictures are limited. We usually take less pictures when we’re traveling with the family.

  • 2007 Halloween Night

    Monday, Oct 29, 2007 1:28PM / Members only

I was contemplating whether to do the No Doubt Gwen Stefani or her current Sweet Escape Gwen Stefani look for this Halloween. I typically love her No Doubt look  more, but I know it was hard to achieve her big swirl hairdo. At first, I was planning on getting a blond wig and hairspray the bangs to make that swirl of hers, but it's not easy playing with the wig. Later, I decided to do her platinum bob hairdo by buying a platinum bob. Luckily, they sold it, but I didn't like it because it didn't fit right..The length was longer so it hits my shoulders and causes the ends to flare up.

Anyway, so finally I decided to be the Gwen of No Doubt. I know she lets her hair down sometimes without the big swirly bangs, so I thought I can still pull that look off if I find a nice blond wig. I have most of the stuff to piece the costume together so that wasn't too hard. All in all, I love the outcome of it. Hubby was discouraging me not to be Gwen cos people won't be able to tell because I'm shorter, I'm asian, my skin is not white, blah blah blah. Not until the final moment, he was impressed..haha..Oh, people came up to me at the club asking me if I was Gwen and asked to take a pic with me. so BAM!!! They actually love my wig!

    Here are some pics:

Okay, it's been a while since I blogged. The new feature thingymajig is reminding me to blog. What have I been up to? Well, I've been cooking up some shabu shabu (Japanese hot pot.) Man, I have to give myself a pat on the back. It's exactly like the ones at this local shabu house here. I got the marbled beef and pork slices, fried age balls and cakes, fish sticks, napa cabbages, vermicelli, Japanese rice, and all the other good stuff. The secret to this meal is the sesame sauce and i perfected that as well. When I get the chance, I'll upload some pics.

Over the weekends, I've been celebrating several friend's bday. One of my best friend just got furnitures in for her new loft. Pretty sweet..although, they're a married couple with no kids, but the loft feels like a bachelor's pad. 95% furnished with Ligne Roset products. They don't cook so when you open up their fridge it's nothing but Fiji water, Perrier water, Panna water, sodas, and juices. Reminded me of MTV Cribs.

I'm snacking on some Barnum's Animals Crackers. I miss those. I was at the grocery store recently and I saw it and had to buy a big bag.

Oh, this year I think I'm going to dress up as Gwen Stefani for Halloween. I was Captain Booty last year so I'll do something different this year. I need a platinum blond wig and I need to do those crazy hairdo that she does...so awesome!! So what's everyone dressing up as this year??

Zohan was not funny. Maybe it was too stupid for me. I don't think I'd enjoy Love Guru either. Get Smart, maybe.
