  • Calculus Makes Me Poop My Pants

Every morning, I wake up and tell The BF about my dreams. Before I moved in with him, I'd wake up, think about how strange my dream was, and then promptly forget about it. But since I can wake him up in the early mornings with a WWE body slam, I have someone to tell my crazy dreams too! And you know what? I dream a lot about math!

Actually, to be a little more specific, I usually dream that I'm about to graduate... only to find out that I'm failing a math class that I never knew I was enrolled in! Then I spend most of the dream in sheer panic knowing that there's no way I'm going to graduate considering that I've never been to a class.

Now, I'm not a stupid person. I read. I follow current events. I know who the Secretary of State is and the name of the PM of Great Britain. I even know how to hydrate myself in a desert using a cup, plastic, and my own pee. But ask me to figure 15% gratuity and add it into a total of a bill or figure out exactly how much 35% is at a clearance sale is... well... take a seat and watch me count with my toes.

Hey, math isn't my thing, alright? The Asian stereotype is SO hopelessly lost on me that even I have to wonder how I got a college degree. Not just one, but two. Yes, count that... TWO. Funny thing being that my father was a Calculus professor in Taiwan... apparently I WAS found in a cardboard box at a flea market.

On a side note, I once dreamt about how a minority will one day become president and a bag of chips. Strange how both things came true in the same day! Good job America! I'm so proud of you. And I mean the Obama, not the Doritos.

funny but I avoided math in jr. and sr. high and then feared math so much later on, when I needed it for business courses.  So I sucked it up, took a look and said, this is so frigging easy, why'd I make such a big deal about it back when?  I didn't stick with it because i moved to another discipline but what the hell was the impediment?  I can't imagine that at 35 I had more brain power than at 15.  More experience, yes, but not the ability to pick things up quickly.  So I think that the "girls don't do math and science" stereotype that was prevalent in my time (the 60s) was really a significant mental obstacle.

Have you revisited the math world recently?

I am definitely NOT the math whiz in the family... I still remember how frustrated my mom would get trying to help me with my math homework... hahaa... =D but I'm glad that I was at least able to survive thru the math classes at City College.. hahaa... =X
