Well, Andrew, I used my Cantonese for the first time in publi tonight. I wasn't able to speak, but I was able to understand a conversation that some Chinese people were having at a department store. I could tell they were speaking some version of Chinese, but at first I couldn't tell which one. Then I heard them saying prices--and I knew immediately that they were speaking Cantonese (I know my numbers very well). I couldn't really understand much more, oh except when the young woman said something was too expensive--tai douh la--and put it back on the clothing rack. I could tell that they were not familiar with the way the sale pricing worked at this particular store, so I went over and said I understood a little Cantonese and could tell that they weren't familiar with how the pricing worked and explained it to them (in English). They were freaked out that this old White lady could understand some of what they were saying. It was the last thing they expected in North Carolina!

huum spanish is great. i can understand somethings in spanish, cuz is similiar with portuguese :)

I would say the only thing really different about Cantonese is the fact that it is a tonal language. But, once you get used to that fact and develop an ear for the tones, it isn't any harder than any other language and, at least in terms of the grammar, it is pretty simple. I also like how Cantonese uses suffixes to add information to the verbs and little words like "la" that can do so many different things, include suggest register. As an oral language, Cantonese is extremely expressive. Since I am always pushing the limits of expressiveness in spoken English (I invent a lot of words, lol) I love the added levels of expressiveness in spoken Cantonese. Am I very good at it, hardly: but I can see years of enjoyment (and hard work) ahead of me as I try and master it.

About written Chinese, I haven't really started. I recognize a few characters, but that is all. Once I get more of a handle on Cantonese, then it will be time to learn how to read and write, and that will require learning Mandarin because everyone tells me that written Chinese in based on Mandrin grammar and some vocabulary and not spoken Canto. :-(

About the Cantonese--let's just say the past week has been an extended study break. Today, though, I'm back at it. I'm forgetting it everyday I don't study it. The first 2 years of a language are like that--use it, everyday, or lose it.
