As I just completed my FULL Production Chinese Movie with some local stars here in HKG (Naturally not at liberty to disclose much more until the movie is fully edited and released), just wanted to touch on the reality of Acting in Hong Kong, Asia. I’ve been bombed with E-Mails with people asking me to help, but there really isn’t much I can do but say push yourselves into every agents door! Remember HKG is 99% YOU! the US is 99% The Agent, in essence you’re on your own here to make it, or in some cases break! Invest in a top Photographer and run 3 or more Portfolio’s if you haven’t already done so, feel free to e-mail me on [email protected] and I’ll direct to some of the best here, they’ll guide you and set the scene, setting you apart from the other talents, research whom you’re up against and find your niche! Get some coaching, assuming you’re new to the industry, if not do it anyway, what works elsewhere may not stick with the Producers here! HUMBLE and Drop the EGO! It’s a tough, tough, industry, and you’ll find yourself being scouted, asked to go behind Agents backs, direct with clients, becareful! Very thin line here, you have to way out the perks, if you miss-fire, your name will be tarnished and you’re doomed. DON’T think for a second that you’re “safe” if an agent say’s they have a gig for you, the verbally agreed fee may change once you’ve completed the job! & there’s bugger all you can do about it, accept the fee and move on, don’t post BS on FaceBook or other sites, you’re just knocking yourself further down the ladder! There are no contracts, e-mail agreements here, it’s all verbal and trust, so you’ll need to work your butt off to get out there, net-work and prove you’re the best of the best, trust worthy, humble! Take what you can get and don’t throw a strop! Unless you’re Tom Cruise you have very little bargaining power, but once you’ve run a substantial number of gigs, from TVC’s, Live Events, MC, Still Shots, getting a Sponsor and Investor behind you, you’ll find that Asia runs a lot more smoothly! Last but not least, SAY YOU’RE OPEN to ALL Areas, there are talents here that won’t do TVC’s, they don’t want to talk, but expect to get paid the same as an Actor with a Script, isn’t going to work! Try everything and expand your portfolio at least one of everything, naturally you’ll have to draw the line if you feel uncomfortable, but that’s your call. Best of luck to you all!

Why NOT???!!! Simply put back to them, if not now when?

Perhaps it’s not just Hong Kong, perhaps it’s everywhere, but 10/10 times you’re asked what you do?, I’m a Banker, Fund Manager, Insurance Director, Director of XXX Car Co, Doctor, Barrister, Lawyer….yada, yada, yada……..then comes “I’m an Actor”……and silence. Why?.

Confused? As am I.? It would appear that being an Actor is immediately associated with either A: Fame and Fortune and I want to be your best friend syndrome, to B: Thinking in their grey-matter, well I haven’t seen you in any big movies so you’re a struggling Actor/Artist, I’ll move onto the next person. Or at times you’ll get the C: WOW! That’s sound cool, what an easy job heh?, easy….easy….EASY?!, hmmmmmmmm, that’s generally when I grit my teeth and give them the actor’s generous smile, “Sure, if you think so, pat on the shoulder routine and excuse myself to the bar for another triple espresso!”.

How would one approach a question if they don’t have the big gigs behind them, and if they did surely they would not be asked such a question right? So it’s technically a catch 22.

Having moved from Broking, to Insurance, Fund Management then finally IT Tech for GPS/GPRS/AGPS so on and so forth systems for coming up to 5 years, I decided to branch out, let go and be myself.

Now sure if you have the family background things are generally easier to get your foot in the door, or if your relative is of someone infamous in the industry as was one of mine the late A.M., of whom I never dreamt of contacting. Why?, because this is an opportunity to express yourself completely, no more shows, being dangled, sitting behind a desk for 18 hours a day.!

Easy is certainly NOT a word in the Acting industry, it takes a huge amount of commitment, time (of which we never seem to have enough of, nor able to spread equally between whether they be TVC’s, Movie’s, over family and friends and all importantly “ME TIME”!) but that’s the industry, you’re on call 24/7, 365 and if you can’t fulfill these basic requirements, then you best stay put.

You’ll be mocked, humiliated, but end of the day you’ll be noticed and hopefully with luck get nabbed by one of the big guns to get your footing into a “A” grade gig.!. Once there, let the mocking begin as it will subside as long as you don’t rise to it.

So for those that think this is an easy change, think twice, the pressure is more if not as severe as the position you are in, right now know one has it “EASY”, and we make the most of what we have and can get, it’s up to the individual to network, push and pull Producers, Directors, and convince them you’re the right one!

In Summary before you scroll down any further:

I guess some would say I've thrown more punches than I have partied, probably a longer rap sheet then I do filmography, but hopefully that'll reverse!, as the past is in the past, thus; "Yesterday was history, tomorrow a mystery and today the present, hence a Gift!" but I do live by a "Code" that of honesty, loyalty but on fierce integrity for what is right and wrong, I tend to recoil from the hay days of parties and focus now on my family and building myself day by day becoming stronger both mentally and physically. Being born and bred in Hong Kong it's easy to fall into the "chart hi low" syndrome (shoe polisher!) that I'm not and work for what I have, those whom try the initial should re-think their lives. I cherish art, beauty around us, and despise all things phony! Which we have too much of here, More than meets the eye? Damn RIGHT!
I am wildly passionate about Art (abstract and paint myself), motorcycles (MotoGP and have raced on numerous tracks in Germany), National Geographic, not to mention Top Gear!!!! Action packed I guess to say the least, "live and love life!"
But to quote my favourite author Paulo Coelho Yes, tell your story. Be an example to others. Tell everyone that it's possible, and then others will find the courage to climb their own mountains.
p.s. Mountain climbing is GREAT! (Just cut your nails to the bare!)
As for my Cantonese well being 5th Generation Hong Kong born, bred and water fed, Ooooorah!, I never studied Cantonese but picked most of it up from T.V. and my large fleet of drivers, (that being taxi's!) needless to say past jobs where English wasn't prominent I was basically forced to learn or sink in those years!, coming from a family based on lawyers, doctors, barristers, bankers, brokers, I couldn't imagine anything more tedious! I've done the desk Jockey role not to be confused with DISC jockey and am now pushing hard to land a role in Acting/Producing/Voice-overs/Stunts and anything else required of Me.!

For my family, my son and my wife, I now live without fear of Sacrifice!
