  • Freelance Life

    Monday, Oct 4, 2010 10:55AM / Members only

Is has been a while since I update the blog, in fact I haven't been updating it since I've been back in Sydney.

It took a little bit of time to settle back in to Sydney life, looking for place to live and getting my name out there for some freelance gig.

I've did some freelance work while I was full-timing in Sydney before but this time is different… The pressure is ON this time, it was no longer just a way earn some extra cash but to pay some bills, which forces me to actively sending out my resume, reel and site to studio and recruitment agency. Surprisingly so far all gigs are from direct contacts from studio and of course some friends recommendations.

So far there are enough jobs keeping busy, roving around from studios to studios, trying to avoid unwanted free time gaps between bookings, cashing some studio to pay bills had proven harder then I thought but most studio are okay, I guess not knowing what happen next is the hard part so I still hunting for a good suitable full-time gig, but having said that I've bought the "Freelance design handbook" and "How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul" reading it from time to time so there maybe a chance that I will be freelancing for a while.

There are a upsides too apart from pay rate (if and when I get pay, actually I have just added up the amount that I have earn for the last 6 mounts is about the same of what I earn in LA, but as a freelancer I have had total 4 weeks off, holidays and free gaps ) Speaking of free times that is one of the best plus as a freelancer, as long as I know when my next gig is and the money that I've or will earn from gig will cover until then. Free time is great and heathy way for designer to grain a new skills and perspective ,as long as you are keeping yourself active which could be hard. Is always easier to be couch potato. Keeping your self busy is the key, doing your own projects going to art museum, doing tutorials, design books store, these are all the things I and I believe most of the working full time designers would wish they have time to do. Seeing how different studios operate were also eye opening as well, all studios have things to learn from, whether is file structures in the server, clients skills, seeing how they brand them self as a studio.

Well there are still an other couple of months to go, will have to wait and see If I can actually make a living as a freelancer.

  • Paradise is an hour away from LA

    Friday, Sep 4, 2009 12:28PM / Members only

Is been a while, not too much to report, but never the less I feel like I should write something for the sake of keeping my blog “alive".

Went and saw District 9 in the opening week, just as I have anticipated - fanking awesome, a very refreshing sci-fi movie with lots of Drama in it.

Okay you must be wondering why I have "Paradise is an hour away from LA"as a title of my blog, and so far I'm just talking about the movie District 9, well I toke a two days trip to an island call Catalina island, which is only an hour away from LA "long beach" by boat
to be excited I went to Avalon bay which is one of the main tourist spot in the island, it isn't a big island, but it is real nice.
It isn't exactly you would go for excitement or backpacking kind of holidays but rather cheat yourself once in a while kind holiday,
having said that it does have shit loads of water & wildlife activites and a very nice landmark"Catalina Island Casino" which may make you thinks of this place as a western equivalent of "macau" both is a same island which located only an hour away from the busiest city, well not quite. "Catalina Island Casino" isn't a actually Casino and it never was a place for gamble, in fact the word "Caisno" back in the days means a "public gathering place" which is what this place is. A 2500 sits theater on the ground with the world's largest circular ballroom at the upper level. nowadays the theater are still playing movies during the weekend, two sections a night same movie.

where here are some photos, most of it were taken with my cusomer camera so it isn't the best picture I've took

Well what more can I say over there the summer is hot, people are friendly, the water is clear, and the cocktails are cheap "in a outdoor bar at Descanso Beach, $7 not bad at all"

genrally hotels, eating and drinking aren't cheap but reasonable, and there are different price range to fit your budget. But I'll say if you going to cheat yourself, don't go for the cheapest!

The only thing I think is over price is the boat ride, return ticket from $66 per an adult! A must go places is the Casino, take the 1hour tour, which cost about $18 but it is worth it!

  • Transformers 2 sucked just a little bit more then Pearl Harbor

    Monday, Jun 29, 2009 3:51AM / Members only

Despite all the poor reviews on Transformers 2, me and my friends decided to go and watch Transformers 2, after all we can't say no to giant robots that can transform to things! We walked in with no expectation to the story and just thinking that it will be mindless but at lest a fun entertaining movie. But we were dead wrong, the VFX was realist but it was way too much motion blur, it was almost like a cover up! I can't see much detail in 50% of the robot fighting scenes, and the story is shocking bad. It just wasn't even entertain at all, I was bored not even half way though.
