Beat Walkers Pt. 2

Here we go again...another run-in with them Beat Walkers that wander around harassing the general public...just 'cause they can...

It's unbelievable how unlucky I am with these patrolmen and women but it certainly isn't as bad as an incident involving my colleague's sister, of which I will get to in a bit...

I sat at a park in North Point for no apparent reason except to sit down and talk to myself...err, I mean talk to my camera...seriously, it was my camera I was talking to as part of my daily journal of my journey to the Far East/documentary...whatever, it doesn't even matter...I was alone...on a bench...just chillaxing after a long day at work...

Through my peripheral vision, of which I believe is quite the supernatural power of the eye that I and only I possess (maybe?), I see two Beat Walkers in their tacky blue unis doing their usual, walking the beat...and while I was listening to my mp3 player and focusing on nothing in particular, I had that familiar unsettling feeling in my stomach...at first I thought it could've been the disgusting lunch of which I ordered something I didn't expect and it came out worse than I could've imagined...but it was even worse than that...

It was that feeling of being watched and suspected of no good...yeah, I know, what the shit, right? that's what I said...

Approximately 7 seconds later the two I saw walking in my peripheral was walking towards me.  I look up bewildered by their presence as they said something I couldn't make out, not that I don't speak the language but I was still listening to Lil' Wayne telling me that he's being "misunderstood"...so off goes one earphone, and I say, "Excuse me?" in English of course, 'cause all visitors have been well informed that if you speak English you will not be bothered as much...to my chagrin, one of the officers spoke my language...

What the shit, I actually have to converse with them...so I stood up to their intimidating badges...all up in their grill to make them feel uncomfortable...ok, maybe not but that would've been pretty cool...ok, so I stood up nonetheless...and found that I was about a foot taller than both of them...I had to bend over to hear what they were saying...with very little to talk about besides asking for my ID, they questioned my choice of park to sit at...Victoria Park is down the street and I chose a small park with cars beeping their way through the traffic on Electric Road right behind me...I rebutted by telling them I don't know any better...I'm just a tourist...and of course it wouldn't be right if they didn't question my photocopied passport...honestly, fuck off...I'm not losing my passport because you guys want to come harass a perfectly fine young man sitting alone in the park...

So they came and went like the wind I passed while we had our exchange...then a few days later, I saw another couple of these Beat Walkers stopping a man holding groceries...they made him drop the bags and asked him for his ID...to be honest with you, dude did not look awfully bad, he wasn't in the best shape of his life by any means but he looks like any other guy walking on the street buying groceries...and because I'm nosy, I stuck around across the street and observed...after checking his ID, they told him to raise his arms as they patted him down, cleaned out his pockets, checked his groceries, and called his ID in...then the best part...they let him go...What the shit?!? they did all that for what? what is so suspicious of a man with groceries that you had to pat him down before you call the ID in? I guess they didn't' meet their quota for the day on harassing citizens...

So onward we go, my colleague's sister works at a boutique in Wan Chai...she had an angry customer of whom she tried to deal with accordingly...this Chinaman was apparently irate over the fact he wasn't allowed to do an exchange or refund (as the store posts on its front window)...He started to verbally abuse her and being human, she reacted...but her reaction shots hurt him more than she anticipated, and he took a swing at her, leveling a 20 year-old girl down to the ground...

Being a tough girl, she got up and threw a stapler at him as her co-worker grabbed an officer walking the beat to come in and help...now this is when things usually get resolved and the ppl that need to be punished will be punished, to serve and protect, to assist those in need of help...

But this is a beat walker we're talking about...he walks in and evaluates the situation...and this is his recommendation: Just give the guy what he wants and let it go.  His reason? Simple.  She threw a stapler at him in self defense and the courts won't hear it.  What? and how about putting a scare in the guy and take him to the station? or is a report too much for you to write when you'd rather walk your fucking beat and harass random people that you suspect nothing other than their look?

Fuck off! Seriously, that's what you say to a victim of abuse? This forty-something Chinaman just punched a young girl in the face...and that's what you say?

So all females look out, especially those working retail, if someone pummels you for whatever reason, don't protect yourself and fight back, just take the beating and move on...if you can move after...and then hope that the officers working your case finds you alive and are willing to write a report on your behalf...

There is something terribly wrong with the operations and ethics of these Beat Walkers...maybe they were trained that way...I don't know, I'm just a tourist and just another victim...I only wish the people above these wandering nomads would do something about it...no case is too small for an officer of the law to solve appropriately with some common sense...the court convicts criminals, you find them and solve the case or the problem...

I really don't want a part 3 to this blog for these Beat Walkers...but I'm skeptical that they will change the beat they walk to any time soon...so look for my next installment!

Sick of the beat,
