  • ST/ART in YEN Magazine (Australia)

    Wednesday, Jul 2, 2008 9:57AM / Standard Entry

One of Australia's leading indie magazines YEN just did a piece on art collectives around the world and we're proud to say that they chose us to represent.... Yet more proof that HK is quickly gaining a deserved reputation as a seriously creative place...

Thanks to Mel at YEN Magazine for the support...

    Jay FC.

The article excerpt for those that want to read it:

    ART ATTACK

Meet the coolest collectives from around the world – they’ve joined forces to challenge the old-school studio set up

    ST/ART - Hong Kong

    Art-illery:
*COM, Start from Zero, Grapicairlines, C#, Katol, Ping, ESP, KS1, Big Mad

    WEAPONS OF CHOICE:
    Spray paint, sunshine

“We live in one of the most crazy, densely populated cities on earth. It’s both frustrating and inspiring. It constantly changes and those changes affect what we do and who we are. Our exhibitions relate directly to what’s happening in Hong Kong at the time,” says *COM. It’s a focus that’s earned ST/ART much praise in their home city, as seen in their highly acclaimed 450/SQ. FT. exhibition, “It was the most ambitious thing we have ever attempted and features more than 450 canvases, each measuring one square foot. The whole exhibition was a take on the issue of space in Hong Kong – the lack of it and the high price. We wanted to show that a square foot can have a lot of value beyond a mere commodity to be traded. The show was really well received across the board. We gave ourselves a massive pat on the back for that one.”

*COM describes the space he and his mates Big Mad and Start From Zero started back in 2005 as “unceasingly positive and devoid of any in-fighting that so often characterizes the scene”. And that’s the way they want it to stay “Artists that become involved with ST/ART must have enthusiasm and a sense of humour. We’re a really easy-going bunch. We talk a lot. Mutual respect ensures that everyone’s voice is heard.” Mutual goals also play a part in motivating them to keep moving and creating. “We just want to be able to do what we love and spend more time hanging out in the sun with friends and family.”
