(with Mr. Big Tom @ summit of Mt. Hollywood
)
saw the "news" on The Hollywood Call Sheet the other day, reminded me of a hiking experience this summer...
this guy at foothill, everybody seems knowing him and everybody calls him "Tom," looks at me - the lone hiker from an unknown planet, "where are you from?"
"China," i said. i saw a big child behind a pair of innocent and soft blue eyes.
"Hsie Hsie!" he said, and that, became my nickname for the trip.
such a people person, his warmth/enthusiasm toward everybody feels equal and sincere. and his energy surpasses all the younger hikers around him (about 5 or 6 of us the late comers). with a natural tendency, his eyes keep searching for people that he considers *in need.* me, being the most spontaneous and impulsive hiker in the group not willing to miss any chance of discovering new mountain views (but i know NOT to get lost from the group!!), was soon collected by Tom under his caring wings...
"Hsie Hsie! we always turn left! remember you only turn left!!"
"Hsie Hsie! don't get lost!!!"
"Hsie Hsie! we're here!!!!"
...
his shouting accompanied me throughout the trip, and his weaving hand is always above my head somewhere, from a few hundred feet to a mile away felt like...
and we, arrived the sunset summit, at the SAME time.
a snoopy stranger came up to me and asked, "how did you know Tom? are you friends?" i told him i didn't know Tom we just met at foothill.
"you don't know who Tom LaBonge is??" he seemed shocked, "everybody in LA knows him!! you don't watch TV read news??" blahblahblah...
my usual response to questions like these would be "why should i know him if he doesn't know me." but this time i chose not answering, and walked to the food tables, which were pretty much swept by all the people arrived earlier than us.
fame, is indeed a relative thing.
in the chaos of all the speeches, laughter, applause and cheers, i heard "Hsie Hsie" several times across the crowd, but i hid behind pizza boxes, eating my cookies, fruits drinking soda... Sorry, i was hungry and thirsty and i didn't like to shout in front of a crowd.
by the time Big Tom was leaving, he found me in a corner, still eating and drinking and talking with strangers. He came to his "Hsie Hsie" to thank her for coming shake her hand and say "goodbye."
and i said to him, "now i know who you are, you have to know my name before i let you go." he looked at me like a little pupil first day at school in front of a teacher, his face VERY funny
guess what, Big Tom got my name CORRECT the first time he attempted pronouncing it!
i love this guy! i am definitely looking forward to hiking with Uncle Tom again!
