The subject matter of these photographs appears to be of sand and plants – grains of sand and grains of pollen.
But
Mike Mason, magically, can turn sands into anatomies and trees, and
flowers into dissolving sands. Everything shifts – and flourishes. We
enter a realm, undersea and underworld, of beautiful uncertainty.
As
we allow his shapes and colours to swim before our eyes, they coalesce
as new things, suggesting fresh experiences. The import of these
blooming forms is not expressed in known symbols, of course, and
requires our own creative understanding if we are not to trample these
strange plants underfoot and tread heavily across these mysterious
sands.
If
we take care, the condition of florescence, which allows both plants
and sand to flourish, may burst into efflorescence and give us our
reciprocal delight.
