9/24 work+visit Simon+Children Mentorship Program meeting

After having lunch with Josephine, my NYU schoolmate, and working on a project for half a day, I went to Shum Shui Po to visit Simon 仔. I met up with him at 西九龍中心 and we went to take photo stickers :P
Here is Simon's first photo sticker. He was very excited drawing the photos! What do you think about our creative design of the photos :P
After playing, it's time to study!! We went to a local cafe for afternoon tea and also help him with English dictation.
At 6pm I headed to Soco, Society for Community Organization Center for the 21st round Children Mentorship Program meeting until 10pm.
The meeting today covers:
Topic 1: Poverty problem and children’s rights development in Hong Kong—Policy Perspective
Topic 2: Skills for interacting with the children—Psychological Perspective

Aims of the scheme:
The scheme recruits resourceful and educated volunteer from the community and professional groups to serve as a friend to provide guidance and emotional support to the low income family. Family friend also act as gatekeepers against domestic violence.
The Content of the Scheme:
Training and group activities will be provided for recruited family volunteers to carry out services in an effective way. One volunteer family will closely mentor one low income family, and they are expected to guide or provide the low income with opportunities or resources to improve their problem-solving ability, access to community resources, widening of exposure, improved standard of living, family relationship. Monthly contact is required. The minimum service commitment is one year. Group activities will be organized every three months.

AMERICAN WEB TV CHANNEL KOLDCAST TV SIGNS LOCAL HONG KONG PRODUCTION LUMINA FOR DISTRIBUTION
Hong Kong, SAR, China (Wednesday, September 16, 2009). What do Keanu Reeves, Ridley Scott and Jennifer Thym have in common? They are all working on web series, the latest evolution of original online entertainment, typically short form narratives (three to five minutes) in a serial format (ten to thirty webisodes). Hong Kong is represented by the fantasy thriller LUMINA the Web Series, which has just been signed by American Web TV Channel KoldCast TV to join their award-winning slate of original online content.
“This past week has been amazing,” says LUMINA writer and director Jennifer Thym. “Working with KoldCast TV has been fantastic and heartening - it's rare to meet people who are truly passionate about their work. Web series is still a burgeoning medium, and KoldCast's strategy of being selective about its programming and pro-active about marketing is exactly what the field needs right now. I'm so excited that LUMINA is now on their slate - it's a big step for a new Hong Kong production like ours!"
Marti Resteghini, VP, Network Programming at KoldCast TV, says that KoldCast has been looking for a special series with which to launch its new International channel. “LUMINA is a thrilling fairytale about love, longing and greed. It’s a timeless story that just so happens to be taking place in Hong Kong. Jennifer Thym’s strikingly beautiful series has raised the bar for web programming - both here and abroad,” says Resteghini.
Creating worlds is a passion and one that Thym enjoys. When she entered the film world in July 2008, the investment banker turned filmmaker decided to take a novel approach to reaching her audience. “With LUMINA we wanted to go beyond the conventional format of short film,” says Jennifer Thym, “and create an online fantasy series with wonderful potential for interactivity with its viewers.” As theatrical and DVD sales fall around the world, viewers are increasingly turning to the web for entertainment. “The online audience is already there. To me, it’s about connecting to them with an engaging and beautifully told story.” “LUMINA will open your minds cinematically, and the story will open your hearts to the impossible,” says producer Sommer Nguyen.
LUMINA stars actress and model JuJu Chan, who also stars in the new RTHK reality show on poverty and is the winner of Miss United Nation International Ambassador 2009, Miss United Nation China, Miss Congeniality and Miss TVB People’s Choice for Miss Chinatown USA Pageant 2009. Michael Chan, star of the viral hit Wall Street Fighter IV, and Vince Matthew Chung, winner of The Amazing Race Asia 3, co-star.
The series features music from around the world, including songs from groundbreaking music collective The Enigmatic Army, American college circuit favorite Tim Be Told and China Global Battle of the Bands winner Killer Soap. “Good music is integral to drawing viewers into the story, and I’m honored to have collaborated with such talented musicians,” says Jennifer Thym. LUMINA the Web Series launched this week with a triple webisode release on KoldCast TV, with new webisodes airing every Monday. Juju Chan，廿多歲，自小在美國長大, 成長路上，父親供應豐富，生活無憂，宛如溫室小花…
她曾參與不同電視及廣告演出，是個兼職 Model，在鎂光燈前，她表現得很自信…
這趟，她將到深水埗一個不足 100 呎的板間房，跟一個單親新移民家庭生活 5 天，日間要到茶餐廳工作，又要照顧一個來港不足一年的小孩，體驗單親母親為口奔馳，沒空照顧小孩的兩難局面，了解跨代貧窮帶來的惡性循環…
節目裡說到：
* 深水埗是香港 18 區裡，最貧窮的一區，有最多新移民、在職貧窮人士、以及失業人士，亦集處了最多板間房及籠屋，共住了 150,000 人之多…
* 每年有 20,000 多名新來港婦女，當中 7 成曾接受中學教育，超過一半月入低於 $6,000…
* 飲食業共有 200,000 從業員，每天長時間工作…
* 勞工署資料顯示，快餐店洗碗工平均時薪只有 $24…
Juju 的體驗：
* 第 1 日，清晨 5:30am，Juju 徒步撐了 8 層樓梯… 潘太每朝 6am 便要趕回老人院上班… Juju 沒想像過，一個這麼小的空間，竟住上了廿多伙人，有些我們以為很基本的東西，他們也未必擁有，他們連煮食爐也沒有，基本上是不能煮食，只能用電飯煲煮飯和清蒸食物… 然後，Juju 見過潘太的兒子信誓 (Simon)，他每天只有 $20，照顧自己兩餐… 然後，Juju 返回茶餐廳工作，在那裡當侍應，甚麼工作也要幹… 經過 8 小時工作後，終於下班回家了… 潘太就給 Juju 一位新朋友 (木虱)… 她感慨，社會上好些人很努力地工作，卻仍沒法享有一般家庭有的空間… 幸福並不是必然的，付出了，也不代表跟一般人得到等同的待遇…

第 2 日，是 Simon 的生日，潘太特意取了假陪伴他，Juju 決定親自下廚，泡製生日大餐 (茄汁香腸意粉)… 然後，一伙兒到公園打球… 晚上，到社區中心的時候，Simon 跟其他小朋友吵架，Juju 跟他解釋道理，勸他給人家道歉… 明白到，孩子是需要有成年人在旁給他看管、教訓和指導…

第 3 日，Juju 在上班前，給 Simon 補習，發覺在這種環境下生活的小朋友，因著周邊的誘惑，無法專心學習… 然後，返回茶餐廳上班去… 在餐廳裡 take order 外，還要送外賣，也要站在店外拉客… 辛勞工作後回家，還不能休息，要給 Simon 複習生字…

第 4 日，是 Juju 最後一天在茶餐廳上班，派完傳單後，獲委派洗碗的工作… 她之前也想過，若人肯努力工作，或是努力去找工作，就可以脫貧，或賺錢維持生活，有如洗碗、清潔這類工作，他們要付出大量時間和體力，但收入真的很低，這個社會，普遍覺得洗碗、清潔這類工作，是低下層，或用任何技術便可做到的工作，所以便會付較低的工資，非常不公平…

第 5 日，Juju 帶同潘太、Simon 離開深水埗，去郊遊、踏單車，感受一下大自然的廣闊空間…
經過 5 天的體驗，Juju 領略到，很多時候，是環境和社會叫人難以脫貧，其實是環境削弱了人的競爭力，對下一代抱有很大希望，希望下一代有機會離開貧困的環境…
我想，社會變得愈加功利，要脫貧，談何容易？！只期盼，商家少點剝削、扼榨窮人，以謀私利，經已可幸了！！
「黃蓮苦，貧窮更苦…」因此，人們都拚命掙錢… 只是，一眾貪婪無恥之徒啊！若掙回來的是不義之財，當心他日要加倍奉還吧！！
