  • Recruitment of Child Mentor and teacher

    Wednesday, Nov 25, 2009 10:13AM / Standard Entry

I've joined a volunteer work mentoring kids in the poverty area of Hong Kong, and recently got assigned to mentor a pair of twin sisters. There names are Ada and Ida. 9 years old, very cute girls.

1st home visit to the twins.

My role as a mentor is to tutor my mentees, guide them to community resources, give them support in school work and extracurricular activities.

Teaching them to play the piano.

Bring the twins to play games at game center to have some fun!

    They love cotton candy!!

Many kids living in the poverty area don't have the chance to visit different places in Hong Kong, because transportation is expensive in Hong Kong, and their parents are usually working and won't be able to bring them around.

Last weekend, I've took the kids out to Elements to see the beautiful christmas decorations and spend a few hours at the children's playground.

If you would like to help out with the community, give support to the kids and become a mentor to the children, I recommend you to join the Child Mentorship Scheme. Details are as follow:

    Society for Community Organization (SoCO)

Child Mentorship Scheme and Community Learning Centre

Recruitment of Child Mentor and teacher

    [ 22 nd round ]

SoCO is a non-profitable social services organization which was set up in 1972. In cramped and crowded cages and dilapidated private tenements are found, lonely old people, residents in old public housing estates, new immigrants, children living in poverty, street-sleepers, low-paid workers, and common people whose voices are not heard.  They have long been the targets for our service.

Facing the widening disparity between rich and poor in Hong Kong , the poor struggle each day to survive. Living standards and development opportunities for their children are sadly compromised.  There are more than 380,000 children living in poverty. Among these, some 20,000 children are living in extremely deprived conditions in cubicles and bedspace apartments. They have to do their homework on their beds and earn their living at night collecting discarded paper, cartons and tins, in the centre of affluent Hong Kong .

There are mainly two levels of interventions for the improvement of the children's condition. On the level of policy advocacy, SoCO reviews the respective government policies and organized the affected children to fight for their rights, such as call for rental allowance, shorter waiting time for public rental housing, children subsidy. Meanwhile, SoCO will mobilize the general public to provide direct services in their daily lives.

Would you like to be a mentor or teacher for the underprivileged children?

Join the Child Mentorship Scheme or the Community Learning Centre .(www.soco.org.hk/children/q7_content.htm)

Mentoring children through tutorials, social contact and community resources on a one to one basis or teach children in the Community Learning Centre in Sham Shui Po..
