Was you ever a fan, who was so infatuated, you'd buy anything and everything with that person in. If so who?...enquiring minds(as small as mine is) wants to know

I was terrible , I used to buy everything that had  Van Damme, Arnie, and Stallone in.....(I liked muscles when I was a wee  lass),  kept 'em videos, shiny and dust free. Bought every magazine with them on the cover, poster and accessory going. Did the same with Ekin Cheng and Choi Min-soo too, although saying that, I have actually liked all of Min-soo's stuff, including the light...no no, correction, especially, his light porn movies. I don't do that any more...not the porn, I mean the collecting everything no matter what.!

Now if the lovely Cheng Yi-Kin does ever join, can you remind me to remove this blog, and just sign his page with ,'I have all your movies, love them all'...(I actually do like most..just the odd comedy I was iffy with)

PS. Do you think by forgetting my Bro-in-law's birthday, that i'll be even closer to my sister than we are already? I'll send him a card tomorrow, hopefully he'll get it before today

  • Top 10 British Films ...in my opinion

    Thursday, Jul 3, 2008 6:12PM / Standard Entry

After seeing  the Leonard Maltin list of top 100 films on   Kit Hui's page  http://www.alivenotdead.com/kithui/100+must-see+films+of+20th+century-Leonard+Maltin-profile-195710.html#comments and Jaine 's  http://www.alivenotdead.com/Jaine/pick+top+ten+films+from+your+country-profile-196674.html#comments adaptation of top 10 New Zealand films, I thought I'd follow Jaine's request and blog my films from the mother country of Britain......It's controversial, no 'Trainspotting', 'period dramas',, 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' or 'Brief Encounter' .......Although looking now, I really think 'Shaun of The Dead' should of made my list

The Third Man (1949), never was there a villian quite like Harry Lime, wonderfully portrayed by Orson Welles, for me, 'The Third Man' will always remain a seminal British classic, which I think is still number one in BFI's list. Krasker, the cinematographer won accolade for his stunning cinematography which enriched the characters and indeed Britain itself.

The 39 Steps(1935), a classic hitchcock movie starring ever so suave Robert Donat as the man wrongfully accused, and on the run throughout Britain in order to prove his innocence. To me this was by far the best version of the 39 steps, again the cinematography was beauitfully done, and Donat's portrayal of the engineer was not only sophisticated but also humourous.

Don't Look Now (1973) Nic Roeg's horror classic starred Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland as a couple who are convinced their dead daughter is sending them messages. Sutherland as the father is amazing, his portrayal literally has you feeling as if you are standing there with him as he desperately searches the labyrinth streets of Venice chasing a red coated figure he believes to be his daughter. Still one of the most shocking and chilling endings to any film, although a very slow burner, Don't Look Now has it all, tension, cinematography, drama, and intrigue.

Get Carter (1971) okay so for this film I have a little more interest then most, due to who it was based upon, but there is no hiding from the fact that Michael Caine's portrayal of fictional Jack Carter seeking revenge up in Newcastle is addictively sadistic and a genuine view on Gangster life back in the day, you can't help but want him to have his vengeance, which makes for a difficult tug at your own morals. I suppose it can be viewed as a decent into your own darkness.

Monty Python's The Life of Brian/ Holy Grail ~ Never a fan of the Flying Circus series I was quite surprised to see how much I genuinely liked these two movies and for the fact that their entirely uniqueI can't seperate these two movies, but there is no doubt about it, these two British Movies are probably the most accessible to other nations. It's pure British sarcastic humor at it's very best, it's inane and pointless, but that's where all the fun comes from, and yeah i do know 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' off by heart, and I always smile, I guess it's my version of Que Sera Sera.

Zulu(1964)~ One of the few true story movies I've listed, Zulu was one of the first ever movies I saw and it starred a host of Britain's Best talent at the time, include Michael Caine. It tells the tale of the British platoon that was on a mission to defend Rorke's drift against the powerful and relentless Zulus. For me what makes the film so memorable was the moment when both sides show respect to one another. I don't want to spoil it and so I'll just leave with saying the hilltop scene and stomping feet of one side was very emotional.

The Lady Vanishes(1939), one of my all time favourites across any film industry, again another Hitchcock movie set for the best part of it's time, aboard a train in which a young woman is classed as insane as she frantically searches for her fellow passenger which nobody admits to remembering. A classic spy film that really must be seen to see why a story so common can be made so unique.

The Italian Job(1969)~ Again Michael Caine heads up the cast as Charlie, the man with a plan to use three mini coopers to rob a $4 million bullion in Turin. Classic British caper who can truly use the words 'Cliffhanger' for it's end,and yeah it's the film that brought about 'You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off' You can't help but want the hapless gang to succeed.

Black Narcissus (1947) A powerful, controversial and way ahead of it's time film, in which Deborah Kerr  is amongst a group of nuns in the himalayas who are struggling to come to terms with their emotions. If ever there was a film I could highly recommend, this would be it. I loved it for the fact that it challanged boundaries, at a time when controversy was considered a big no no, and again the cinematography is stunning.

Carry on Doctor ~Not classic by any standards but as with all the Carry on movies, they are a great british institute, and certainly shoved two fingers up the 'No sex, please we're British' theory. For me I loved how they committed tightrope walking with all their inuendos but never quite crossed into lurid. Carry on Doctor was one of the best. It really did suit the hospitals of the time, also bring back Matron...they kept the wards spick and span, and Frankie Howard's mouthing of 'would you kindly piss off' to a cleaner as he's trying to sleep is one of my favourite lip-reading scenes from childhood.

  • Can HP be classed as an Essential travel item !? I'm going to say yes.

    Saturday, May 24, 2008 7:13PM / Standard Entry

Well what do you know, it's been over a week since i've blogged, and I missed a day out completely on AnD....Where's my priorities disappeared too. Actually I don't spend as much time on the computer.

    A) Migraines

    B) I'm supposed to be finishing my wee novel

    C) I actually prefer keeping up to date with friends on AnD then blogging myself.

    D) Helping mum move in...and I don't think moving the figurines is counted as my work having been done

Anywhoo I've just been planning what essentials I need to pack in my travel suitcase (yes that really is how my mind works when at ease) you never know when i'll need it ;)

    So far I've got:-

Never underestimate the power of HP Brown Sauce. Not only good for food, but also brilliant stuff for cleaning pennies!....If it's powerful enough to remove the built up dirt on a penny, what the hell is it doing to my insides !?

Do you ever pack an unusual essential in your suitcase?

  • Jackie Chan's woolworths advert

    Friday, Apr 18, 2008 5:13PM / Standard Entry / Jackie Chan

As I sat watching ITV 2 last night I was surprised to see Jackie Chan as star of the new woolworths advert. The store brought him in because he's rather popular with Woolworths customers.

It was great to see him in the British ad. I've never paid attention to the woolies ads before. Hmm  I think I'll have to buy more from the store now! As if I need an excuse to go shopping in a store full of DVDs

I noticed the ad has split his fans down the middle as to why he did it. Personally I say. "Why the Hell not". And there is the added bonus that it gives him a promotion boost in the UK.

Gotta run, ta ta for now!
