  • An Appeal for Emergency Support for the Communities Affected by Tropical Storm/Typhoon Sendong “Washi” in the Areas of Iligan City and Lanao del Norte

    Tuesday, Dec 20, 2011 6:14PM / Members only

An Appeal for Emergency Support for the Communities Affected by Tropical Storm/Typhoon Sendong “Washi” in the Areas of Iligan City and Lanao del Norte

It was midnight of December 16, 2011 when Typhoon Sendong landed in Northern Mindanao including Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City. It brought heavy rains which resulted to flash floods to numbers of communities. As of Dec. 19, 11:00 p.m., it is estimated that there are already 937 people killed, more than 1,500 are still missing, more than 167,000 affected individuals, and almost 20,000 families were displaced that are located in the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Zambaonga Del Norte, ARMM, Negros Provinces and of the affected areas of the Philippines.

In Iligan City, as of December 20, 2011, 45,851 individuals were affected or 10,341 families, 279 died while 230 individuals are still missing, and a total of 9,214 properties and infrastructures were damaged (inc. 157 houses recorded as of Dec. 19). The internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iligan City are housed in 16 evacuation centers and relatives. Many of the IDPs opted not to stay in the evacuation centers because of the difficult access to food supplies, facilities, overcrowded, poor sanitation, lack of potable water and limited number or no toilets at all to accommodate evacuees. The flashfloods in Iligan City has directly affected 24 out of 44 barangays.

Based on the initial data gathered by the MPPM network members, urgent needs of the affected families are the following:

    - 1st: Food - Rice, drinking water, dried fish, canned goods, mongo, canned sardines, oil, soya sauce, salt, coffee, milk

    - 2nd Non-Food - Blanket, mosquito nets, slippers, mats, clothing for children/adults: underwear, shirts, shorts, bra, panties,

    - 3rd Hygiene kit - bath and laundry soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, napkins, diapers

    - 4th Kitchenware – cooking pots, ladle, cups, drinking glass, tablespoon, pitcher, water containers/jugs, pail, water tubs.

    - 5th First aid kit - alcohol, cotton, betadine, bandage, plaster, gauze bandage.

With the current situation of Iligan City and of the entire affected communities, we appeal for your support to help respond to the urgent needs of the communities affected. Any donation can be channeled to our network command center, RDRRAC, (Ranaw Disaster Response and Rehabilitation Assistance Center Inc.) at Door 2 Maca-agir Apt., 6th East, Tubod, Iligan City, Lanao del Norte Philippines, telephone number +63 63-223-3171. • What is happening is happening...

    Saturday, Dec 17, 2011 12:58PM / Members only

Just of today at dawn time residents of Northern Mindanao, experienced the wrath of Tropical Storm Sendong that brought floods across some parts of the region of Northern Mindanao, specifically the two cities namely Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City of Lanao del Norte. Rescue Teams are still in action in responding the affected residents.
According to MindaNews there was still undetermined number of persons who died due to flash floods in the two cities. While the head of rescue team in Cagayan de oro City said at least 40 persons have been reported dead and it is still expected that the number will rise as the residents are still unaccounted. People were definitely evacuated to different evacuation centers with the help of the Rescue Teams since some residents experienced a roof-high level of flood waters that made them stuck to the roof and others on the second floor of their home. Sad to say but some residential houses near the river bank were carried away due to flash floods.
Around 2: 00 AM dawn time floodwaters rose abruptly and my sister’s house filled with floodwaters at Knee-High level and lucky for them since their house was at a little high level compared to the others.  While my Aunt’s House (My Mother’s Younger Sister) just a block away from my sister’s house was really flooded at 2 meters high and the other residential areas were also affected by floodwaters as told by my sister.
My mother travelled yesterday, December 16, 2011, Morning time to catch a Barge from Balingoan Misamis oriental to Camiguin Island. She really wanted to go home since it’s been 2 weeks that she’s away and there were lot of things to do before the Town Fiesta Celebration and to have a good bonding with my relatives from Davao City and from other regions who will also visit Camiguin to witness the celebration of their Town Fiesta. Thus, because of the Storm the barge were not allowed to travel to Camiguin Island and so lots of passengers were stranded at the Ports including my Mother. I just Hope that my mother is fine, she had now emptied her cell-phone battery that make me to no longer have a contact or communication on how’s her travel and her health.
Whew! The Storm is different now a days, it was my first time to experience a tropical Storm here in Lanao del Norte for 5 years of residing. I just remember my presentation regarding Climate Change in titled “Youth perspective on Climate Change” during the youth peace camp 2009 here in Lanao del Norte, where I showed to the youth participants a document part of my presentation, regarding the simulation of Sea Level rise where they witness the possibilities and effects of floods to regions and near the coastal areas. For sure if they still remember the inputs of the presentation they will remember what was it happening now.
Climate change is not just a natural phenomenon anymore. Though People around the globe are responsible for the environmental protection but it is those whom hold great power who maintains a Political-Economic system in favor for their power and profits are more liable for the drastic change of climate…

  • Profit = Exploitation of resources

    Tuesday, Nov 29, 2011 12:05PM / Members only

In each blouse, jeans and many others that we buy and wear, it cost us a lot of money from our labor...
However, its not just money that matters… The great part is that the system of modern commercialism and globalization leads big capitalist and foreign corporations to freely invest and exploit our resources (resources, such as our labor, land and other natural resources) to generate profit, though obviously with support from the Government.

Capitalism really is exploitative, an economic system that exploits not just our labor but our natural resources as well. Capitalism doesn't care of its effects, it only cares on its profits.

Those large factories that produced jeans and other clothing’s and other materials especially those with “popular brands” are one of those worst polluters to our environment. As consumers of these commercialized commodities, we cannot escape of guilt that people and consumers somehow had contributed and become part of the system of capitalism and leads to the destruction of our rich natural resources. The great destruction of the environment should have been a responsible of those exploitative capitalist and foreign investors. Despite the role and task of the government and the environmental laws to protect the people and ecological balance, the current system will still prevail if there will be no political will to fight against the exploitation of the Elite capitalist for their private gains and profits.

People are responsible for what they eat and use, thus people globally should exert their rights for sovereignty on how much and what food, clothing and other basic commodities to produce that is friendly for the environment and good for our health (no chemicals please!). Everyone, People all over the globe should protect, exercise their human rights and act our task to protect the nature or environment for the future of the youth and the next generation.
