Jet Li Discusses Value of 'Spirit' through Martial Arts

After speaking at the opening ceremonies of the 2007 World Wushu Games being held this week in Beijing (news article),  international action film star Jet Li watched the first day's competition.  Its been nearly 25 years since his last wushu competition as a professional Chinese Martial Arts athlete,  and Wushu as a sport has changed quite a bit. 

In an interview with Xinhua,  Jet expresses his concern that Wushu is losing out in popularity to other martial arts disciplines such as taekwondo and judo the world wide popularity.  He hopes that the organizers can work to improve the sport: "Chinese Wushu needs a proper style to fit everyone and be suitable for the 21st century."

He also explained how his martial arts background connects to his current interest in humanitarian and charity work: "The spirit of Wushu acts like humanity, harmony and mutual care, which should be shared by the whole world as we are all global citizens and should always think more about others."

He also connected his comments to the fact that the sport of Wushu was not accepted as an Olympic event for the 2008 games: "Being in the Olympics is not that important, what's important is that we should never give up, which is also the spirit of both Olympics and Wushu."
