I came across this list recently on a website of the 'top 10 cutest traits of Japanese girlfriends' It came from a survey of Japanese guys who have girlfriends, and what they felt were the nicest things about them:

    1. She links arms with you

    2. She makes you bento

    3. She does her best to help out in your daily life

    4. She asks “Do you love me?”

    5. She always spends the weekend with you

    6. She asks “What were you doing?” if you don’t see her for a day

    7. She wants to accompany you everywhere

    8. She cleans your room for you

    9. She does her best to match her hobbies to yours

    10. She’s jealous of your last girlfriend

I thought they all were cute too to say the least!

    Marie....

    That sounds really disturbing!
But coming to think of it......I am not surprised by this at all. Coming to HK I seem to have picked this 'vibe' up too....

I believe that survey is right by any accounts because I too have seemed to witness this.
I too know of HK friends/guys who like to play video games all day and I have heard stories of plenty of Chinese/HK women complain they can't find a husband because a lot of them are the introverted type/like to gamble, but also that they are afraid to date HK men in general because they are a wildcard...they don't know what they may sometimes do when they are together, and that if they are together there is also a great chance they could always go off and meet someone else who is perceived to be better than them (mostly based upon age and level of sexual attraction). This is an issue across all ages, and especially apparent for those with money.

I could imagine that a number of guys in HK do fit that type you describe.....sitting at the home computer all evening after work and playing online with friends etc without seeing how the gf/wife would feel/cope and helping out. I had a friend who broke up with his girlfriend sometime last year..his gf left him and I believe you have really put your finger on the crux of the matter as to why he had broken up with his gf (which I could never figure out before). And yes, he did like playing video games, so if anything he only has himself to blame!

Mind saying that, there are chaps in HK who are genuinely nice. I've come across quite a number of guys in HK who are happy to be with his family and play with/look after the kids/helping out with the family. I admit I am a bit like that myself. ^^  But I don't know how it would apply to younger HK girls, who I perceive are much more independent nowadays than their mainland counterparts and for the most part, don't want children/a lot of children at their current status unlike their parents.

    Jason,

ChinaSmack is a blog based in Shanghai and they did a series on what Chinese women think of their husbands and boyfriends.  Let's just say that the state of marriage/relationships in China, if these women's comments are any barometer, is in serious trouble.  Over and over again these women complained of how the men never lifted a finger to help around the house, even though both spouses worked.  The men ignored the child, forgot their wife's birthday and anniversary and trashed the place and then expected their wife to clean up after them.  But the biggest complaint that women voiced over and over again was how the men were totally consumed with the Internet and video games.  They come home from work, log on and stay online until all hours of the morning, ignoring their spouse and children.  The women are sick of it.  There were also more than a few complaints that the men let themselves go, were fat and lazy and then paraded around the house in all their naked horror.  I think most of the respondents were in their 20s and early 30s, so their husbands should have been about the same age.  The overall theme was how little respect Chinese men have for their wives.  Big trouble, and it ain't in Little China!

    Jaine: ......interesting! :D

Marie: Yes I know, and that's probably why we've witnessed a lot of 'failed marriages' over the years in the West......we knew plenty of people who broke up after 4-7 years of marriage (on average).

Actually I think this survey is very interesting.....cos it's showing different attitudes to relationships depending on where you're coming from (East or West)...

You know, a good example is from my dad. Back in London, my dad used to get harrassed by some of his male Caucasian clients who used to ask him 'You still married with the same girl all these years?'. He would say 'Yes' and he'd always find it surprising to get asked that question. :D

Joanne: Well good luck in your search for a Japanese gentlemen!! :P lol

MC: Hahaha....you're right! Yes this survey did actually come from an anime site BUT it was also from a real-life survey.......so at this point I don't know if it was based on the views of otakus (Japanese nerds) or on real-life experiences of Japanese men. But my guts say that it is from a true survey about relationships in Japan. :))

Darn, no wonder I've never dated a Japanese gentleman, I don't qualify for any of these. I'm quite suprised by some of them, the guys I know hate being nagged about #6 and #4, and certainly #7 lol.

Most Western guys absolute do not want to hear, "Do you love me?"  That is a deal breaker, for sure.

Also, changing her hobbies to match his?  This does not bode well for the future happiness of this relationship, not when a woman has to efface herself to this degree.  And cleaning his room is definitely a no-no.  If, in the future, you want him to help out around the house, do not, ever, clean his room when you are dating.  Let him know what you expect of him, and not trashing his place and then expecting you to clean up after him is one of those expectations.  Women are in the driver's seat in relationships (at least before marriage) because they control the sex.  Recognize and use that power, girls!
