I bet you can't guess what this is?

Shall I tell you? It's a long story......

About a week ago I was helping to clear my turtles tank. I clear their tank almost every week because they eat and defecate a lot (they are just big turtles). Because we have to dechlorinate the water, everytime I clear them out I have to separate them so that they are not affected by the changing water, otherwise it damages their skin (chlorine reacts with their skin badly).

Anyways I was doing my usual thing.....clearing out the tank, the pumps and the pipe in the other room for at least 45 minutes and I thought to check up on them. When I came back to check how they were doing......I was astonished to find something rounded and white sitting in the middle of the bathtub! I had a load of turtles all crawling around, and somehow something white, slippery and round turned up in the middle of the tub.............I went to my family and we came to the conclusion that it looked like one of our turtles.......had laid an egg!!!  I was absolutely flabbergasted.....and had no idea this would happen!

So the photo that you see.......is a pic of the egg we have put in normal plant soil.

We are told if we incubate it for a few months, it may hatch a little turtle!

    NIfty!

Before kids, we kept reptiles. We had a 10 pound iguana called Col. Matrix who, for reasons we couldn't figure out, stopped eating. Well, I did my darnedest. Gave him appetite stimulants, opened his mouth and put in his fave foods--iguanas don't have lips and can't spit so he had to swallow...lol!--and, fearing he had some sort of bowel obstruction, gave him warm baths in the tub. Well, imagine my surprise going into his room (what's now my daughter's room was then the office and lizard room) to turn on his habitat  light and I found HER sitting on a pile of around 30 eggs and a look of "whew!" on her face! The Col. had never been with a male, though so we knew there wouldn't be any little iggies :(

    Marie: Haha, yes!

Nancy: Yeah it came as an absolute shock...we're still working it out but we think we know who the culprits are....it's most certainly our Brazilan Red Slider Terrapin Ah Dai and one of the other large turtles (who we know is female). She's one of these heavy brown coloured turtles (I don't know the name). From the size we suspect it is her who laid the egg....

    PP: Yeah!!

    Silky: Thanks! :)

SS: You know ur stuff! ^^

Ha ha, turtles doing what comes naturally.  But in captivity, I don't think they do it so much. :-)
