Kiwi in Korea 13 - would you like some tiger testes with that

Went to Daegu today.  It utterly pissed down - thankfully every corner shop in Korea sells umbrellas.   I went to the Medicinal Markets, which are not really markets but lots of shops selling traditional Korean medicine.   It was interesting, especially seeing the velvet and antlers as my father used to export velvet (he was a deer farmer) to Korea.  There is also a exihibtion hall (no camera flash allowed) so no photos.  It was mainly full of botantical samples but included a stuffed bear, fur se...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 12 - Seoul and bye byes

Hey spunky dunkies

hope you have all had a great weekend.  K and I went to Seoul on Friday night and came home Tuesday but went straight to Pusan as she had a flight first thing Wednesday morning home.  I will miss her.   It was so good catching up with my mate M again and meeting her lovely friends.   Unfortunately I drank more than I'm used to on Friday night and stayed up a bit too late so wasn't feeling so hot on Saturday - doh.

Kiwi in Korea 11 - bloody muddy, bloody great

K and I headed off to the Boryeong Mud Festival on the weekend.  This is the 11th year and it gets bigger every year.  Last year it attracted over a million tourists.  The festival goes for a week but we went to the opening weekend.  We drove up with some Native English teachers from Miryang.  Getting there was interesting - we were fine until it was time to leave the expressway.  How many English teachers does it take to read a map?!    It was a long way with over 5 hours of driving each way but mud + sun + beer...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 10 - getting lost in Daegu and the dentist

It is so hot here, I cannot sleep, I keep waking up drenched in sweat (ewww)  and then the mozzies buzzing in my ear stop me from sleeping again.   It has been 3 or 4 nights now, I have taken to putting a lavalava under the tap and wrapping it around me when I go to bed.  I haven't done that since I lived in Sydney in the early eighties.   (If you don't know what a lavalava is - it is a large rectangular cloth wrapped around the waist and worn by Pol...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 9 - home, High School and Fashion shows

Gah, I'm still conflicted.  I have changed K's ticket and she goes home in a couple of weeks.  I felt sick - I feel sick sending her off by herself (though she swears she will be okay) and I feel sick at thought of letting my High School down.   I have a hugh amount of respect for the teachers and the students there and apart from severe bouts of homesickness (which you have witnessed) I like teaching there.

Here are some photos of one of my classes.   These photos will go on the High Sch...Read more

pick top ten films from your country

I was reading Kit Hui 's blog about the film list (100 must see movies from the 20th century) supplied by Leonard Maltin which she described as American centric.  The list is indeed American centric though there are some good films on it.

This made me think - if you could recommend 10 films, from your own country (be as centric as you like),  as essential viewing what would they be and why.......

I had a bit of trouble picking ten from N...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 8 - Miryang & strangers in my house...

Feeling a bit better but Kahurangi is going home.  I will change her tickets today and in three weeks she is going home.  I will stay a bit longer and look for work in Wellington.  I like Korea but my daughter is my priority.  I can always come back but maybe I will try somewhere else - who knows.

Went to an expat bbq in Miryang (about 40 minutes east of here) on Saturday.  Was a great night but I drank far too much red wine (found a nice Australian Cab Sav at Home Plus).   It was nice to speak...Read more

How many of these books have you read?

Thanks to unwoundclock for this

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well, let's see.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicise those you intend to read 3) Underline the books you LOVE. 4) Reprint this list in your own blog so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)1 Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen 2 <...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 7 - should I stay or should I go

Went to Busan again on Friday.  Kahurangi had an appointment with an orthodontist who speaks fluent English (I advertised on pusanweb (expat classifieds) and was recommened him).   It was great he went to High School in Christchurch NZ (Christ College for those Kiwi's on here) and could understand my accent, in fact he has NZ citizenship.    He was very kind and even feed us (kimbab) coz he knew we had travelled for a couple of hours to get to his clinic.  If you ever need a dentist in Busan, I recommend Dr ...Read more
