Kiwi in Korea 10 - getting lost in Daegu and the dentist
It is so hot here, I cannot sleep, I keep waking up drenched in sweat (ewww)
and then the mozzies buzzing in my ear stop me from sleeping again. It has been 3 or 4 nights now, I have taken to putting a lavalava under the tap and wrapping it around me when I go to bed. I haven't done that since I lived in Sydney in the early eighties. (If you don't know what a lavalava is - it is a large rectangular cloth wrapped around the waist and worn by Polyneasians, the word is Samoan (and every Kiwi in Korea should have one), and if you do know what a lavalava is pardon me for telling you to suck eggs).
I went to Busan on the weekend again. K had an appointment with her dentist, the last one as she is going home. Honestly I think my dentist is the kindest man on the planet, he wouldn't charge us for the two appointment's she had (including x-rays) and when I asked to make an appointment for a check up (its been a couple of years) he fit me in then and there and refused to charge me for that too. Not only is he kind but he has a gentle manner and is softly spoken. I think I want to marry him and have his babies.
Anyhuu I want to do some hikes but K does't so we comprised and just went to Beomeosa temple. The place was busy with tourists but here are some photos:
I think the banner kinda spoils the effect... oh well
this tortoise rocked!
there were lots of large temples but people were everywhere spoiling my shots (just kidding).
okay enough of the cultural stuff.... I also went sock shopping, socks are sold by many street vendors, some are cool, some are funky and some are totally kitsch (the middle guy is an Entertainer - Noh Hong Chul) and I'm wearing the Micky Mouse ones :
and now for something completely different:
woot - my favourite AnD artist (Sung Kang) visited me.
Yes I am pathetic enough to take a photo of the visit.
I embrace it baby.
Thanks a friend and JS for visiting too hugs and also all my other friends and fans who visit me hugs
Tomorrow K is going to Miryang to hang out with the brother of an English teacher there. He is visiting from the States. On the weekend we are going to the Boryeong Mud Festival. Woot it should be fun. I'm looking forward to getting down and dirty. hahaha
Whatcha all got planned for the weekend?
oh I forgot to say that while my students have exams this week I bused to Daegu (it's only the title of my blog - doh), it was so hot and big (Korea's 3rd largest city) and I couldn't figure out how to bus to where I wanted to go so I caught a taxi (somebody helped me flag it down and give the driver directions). It took half an hour to get to my destination and nearly an hour to get back again because the traffic - eek and the taxi (again someone helped me flag it down and give the driver directions) only cost about 12,500 won (about 13 bucks) in Nelson it costs me $10 to catch a taxi from the airport to my house, a grand distance of three kms and a 5 minute journey.
