Yes I'm taking about the sibling like rivalry between Australia and New Zealand.

The bit of water that seperates us is the Tasman Sea, it is affectionately called 'the ditch' by both Aussies and Kiwis alike.

Now we do share many cultural things with each other like:

vegemite, cricket, meat pies (yum), rugby, rugby league (a much better game - but one still played by thugs), netball, milo (yum) and pavlova.

(brag moment - this is my sister  ) Rugby leagueInterestingly, the Aussie women's netball team love playing in NZ because of the media coverage they get here (netball is hugh here), apparently they don't get much coverage at home.  Of course some of these games are enjoyed elsewhere too. YUM YUM

Pavlova is a yummy meringue cake decorated with cream and fruit and for some with lollies, if it takes your fancy.  It is named after the famous ballerina and New Zealand and Australia are always scraping over who invented it.  At last count it was us - woot woot, as proven by a letter, containing the recipe, dated in the 20s sent from someone in NZ to Australia.  hehe Aussies are always pinching things from us - Pavlova, Pharlap (a race horse), Spilt Enz, Dragon, Russell Crowe they can keep (the traitor now calls himself an Aussie *hurrumpf* ).  I'm surprised they haven't taken chocolate fish and pineapple lumps too.

JOKES - we are often the butt of each other's humour, even at diplomatic levels, during the 1980s, then Prime Minister of New Zealand Robert Muldoon was asked about the increasing exodus of New Zealanders leaving the country to work in Australia. His comment was that by doing so, they were raising the average IQ of both countries.

In general terms, Australians are stereotyped in New Zealand humour as being brash, boorish, and more than a little stupid. New Zealanders, in return, are seen by Aussies as being dull, unsophisticated yokels.  Examples: "You know it takes an IQ of 60 to tie your shoe laces - thats why Australians wear thongs (flip flops)" - of course the counter is "and Kiwi's wear gumboots".  OR " How long does it take an Australian women to have a shit - 9 months".

Sheep jokes, yes these abound, are generally crude and are more prevalent in Australia about Kiwi's but it happens conversly too (much the way the English reserve sheep jokes for the Welsh).

ACCENTS - though to many people our accents are similar to us the difference can be marked - For instance when six (6) is said by a Kiwi, it sounds like 'sux' to an Aussie, conversly when said by an Aussie, it sounds like 'sex' to us.   Fish & Chips - Fush & Chups and Feesh & Cheeps is another example.

ANZAC - but despite all this, we get on very well and share an annual public holiday (ANZAC day - Australian & New Zealand Army Corps) to remember our fallen soldiers who fell together in war.  It occurs on April 25 to commerate the landing of troops at Gallipolli in the first World War.  It also commerates our fallen soldiers at other wars.

Great and very educational blog Jaine.  It's good to hear about two neighboring nations that get on so well and even have a shared holiday.  This has made me think of the ep of Flight of the Conchords where some guy mistakes the guys for being Aussies and decides to hate on them just for that very fact.  He doesn't even want to hear that they're from NZ.  I'm willing to bet this was probably inspired from actual events.

Haha, yeah, I started bagging Conroy on here for being Australian, and had to do a bit of explaining and convincing people I didn't actually hate Australians.

Thanks for sharing this cultural tidbit between the Aussies and NZs. We in other parts of the world tend to lump the 2 nations together. I don't know much about the differences between the two. heheh.

Not sure what's netball. Is that a form of volleyball?

Vegemite. Gina Huisy talked about that. Wonder what the heck it is. Apparently, it's yummy.

Neighbours everywhere love to take the michael out of each other, like Canada & America, Britain & Ireland, and yes the poor welsh suffer so many sheep jokes.....I love the 'ditch' thing you guys have! But when push comes to shove we often stand together in the face of adversity.

Agree with you on Rugby League it is way better than Rugby Union ( many call union the 'pansy' choice), but it has a lot more followers unfortunately .

Learn something everyday, I always thought Crowe was an Australian......he's no sad loss though ;)

So that's the chocolate fish ...looks very edible ;)...oh meat pies :(, vegetarian lifestyle can hurt sometimes, such sweet and tasty memories!

    Excellent blog...Cool sister...wanna trade?,,hehe

If the Aussies pronounce "six" like "sex" then how do they pronounce "sex"?  I mean, it's a different question "would you like to have six?" from "would you like to have sex?"  I'd say, sure, I'll take a six-pack.   The accents sound pretty much the same to me as a US person.

What an interesting blog.  I can tell you one personal preference.  I never saw pictures of Australia which looked as beautiful as the mountains of New Zealand.  You both have beautiful shores and beaches but those "middle earth" mountains are just dreamlike landscapes.  I'm not so much into deserts.

    I LOVE this blog...

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE Oi Oi Oi... =)

You are so right about the accents... when I was working in IT, I had a lot of NZ clients and we had trouble understanding each other whenever we read out reference numbers to a case - it was kinda funny. I remember having one NZ guy who pronounce the number 6 with "sex." He then asked me why I kept saying sex instead of 6 - we both cracked up laughing!

Vegemite is sooo yummy! Do you have the vegemite ad with the corney song that goes something like this, "We're happy little vegemites, as bright as bright can be we, We all enjoy our vegemite for breakfast, lunch, and tea..." in NZ?

Hehehe... I don't think Aussies give a rats about Netball players. I remember 5 years ago, I served one of the most popular netball team in Australia (can't even remember their name), and they were billigerent and dirty (ate and acted like filthy pigs)... it was a disgrace to all women. 3 years later, I had to serve them again at my then job and they were a little better, but still rude.

PAVALOVA is beautiful! My friend made me one for my birthday and I also heard it was invented by a NZ person.

PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING... I have to sit another test when I finish so that they can see whether my non-trait characteristics have changed... and what areas of psychology I would be suited to....I'm actually not quite sure why I will have to sit another test... it's a pain having to get time out of my busy schedule to sit a similar bloody test...

My personality test results were quite consistent, but then because it took 2 hours to complete the test, when I got half way I ended up clicking any option... bad me bad me...

FINGERS CROSS to your daddy! =)
Let us know how it goes...

It's been a pleasure to meet you & get to know a bit about NZ but I ain't going near that rivalry no way no how. I can think of a couple of Aussies I post with on jetli who'd have something to say about this entry. You did end on a friendly note tho. Seems in the end you share a lot. Sounds like the US & Canada. We tell them to keep their winds from the antarctic & they tell us to keep our air pollution, among other things.

That's really interesting.  I had know idea about this silent sort of feud.  I guess this happens in every country.  It sure is here in the US with a vengance.

funny that the sea is called "the Ditch." What is vegemite? I feel like I'm on another planet!!! The Pavlova looks so good, and I'm so glad it's named after Anna Pavlova. Also, does your sister play professionally? I love reading about NZ!
