So recently, I've been applying to a few jobs here in HK as native English copywriter/editor and a few assistant jobs. I figure that native English, my US university MA degree and experience working at Microsoft would be beneficial towards getting a work visa here, so those are the kind of jobs for which I applied.
As I was going through the job descrīptions that matched my qualifications, there was one I was applying to where I was thinking: "oh god please don't call me back for I would be so miserable doing this." It was a head hunting job that required cold calling executives to fill positions at other companies. I suppose the experience would be very interesting, but definately not fun and definately not my first choice.
Later that day, as I was sitting in a cafe, finishing lunch with a few friends, I get a phone call. The caller ID displayed an HK number, and a rush of adreneline rushed though my head. I thought: "wow this could be an interested company replying to my application...or equally likely, a miss dial.
me: wai...
caller: hello...is this jack...
me: (spirits raised and eager with anticipation) yes, this is jack!
caller: hi jack! this is Lucia from Gemini, I just saw your application for the head hunting researcher position...
me: (for f*** sake...I mean...uh) yes...I did apply for that... (trying not to deprive myself of oxygen)
We ended up talking for 15-20 minutes, and she said she would submit my resume to her client, but it would be difficult though not impossible to get the company to sponsor a work permit for me. GREAT! I think...
On the way back to Tung Chung I told my friend Mark about it, and he aptly called it "Murphy's law of job hunting." Makes sense...
The moral of this story: don't apply for any jobs that you would hate doing, because it would be the first step towards making your life miserable. Having a boring job and living in a boring place (yes Bellevue gets old if you've lived there for 15 years) back in the states was what made me want quit my job at Microsoft and come to HK in the first place. I figured I should do something exciting during my youth while I still can so I would have no regrets later in life. But in the event this company hires me and I get no other responses from others, that would officially make me up the creek without a paddle.
So at this time I'm considering alternatives...anyone know of any gangsters in HK who seeks an English speaking, foreign educated self-starter who is a detail oriented multitasker with some wushu and grappling skills? Better yet, anyone know how to be a gangster? Please call 51949761. And please...serious inquiries only... ;)
