The Subwing Lets You Fly Like Superman...Underwater

If you thought water skiing and wakeboarding were extreme water sports, those ain't got nothing on the Subwing - the first towed water sport to happen beneath the surface.

The sport involves grabbing onto the Subwings which are tethered to a motor boat. The rider is then pulled through the underwater landscape, able to steer and do tricks by manipulating the angle of the wings.

It would seem, however, that for this to be fun you would need to be a master at equalizing the pressure in your ears several times per minute, and a large lung capacity probably wouldn't hurt either.

Plenty of robots can fly -- but none can fly like a real bird. That is, until Markus Fischer and his team at Festo built SmartBird, a large, lightweight robot, modeled on a seagull, that flies by flapping its wings. A soaring demo fresh from TEDGlobal 2011.
