  • Being black for a day...

    Thursday, Jul 31, 2008 9:02PM / Members only

Yesterday I had the most interesting shoot of my whole career. Half of my body and my face was painted dark brown! I looked like an African Swahili princess.
The story was for hair so I also sported 5 different hair styles...very African. I don't know why I agreed to do this...I guess perhaps it's beause I've always wondered what I would look like as a black girl, or maybe it was simply because I love doing creatives....but whatever the reason was, I did it, I was a black girl for a day, and I loved it!!!
The funny part of this whole thing was that there were a lot of people who are dark skinned in that area and I had to step outside for a minute only to have them pointing and starring. (I think they suspected that there was something not right.) So I went indoors quickly before I offended anyone.
The pictures turned out amazing and they don't even look like me!
At the end of the day I had three guys frantically scrubbing me to get the makeup off but to little success...I walked out of the studio multi colored...a little embarrassing to say the least.
Well I think I got most of it off now...and I'm back to my plain white skin, but I must say, I miss being black!
Today I will be shooting for some hair awards thing, should be fun!

  • Day at the park

    Friday, Jul 18, 2008 9:24PM / Members only

After a busy few days of castings and shooting I decided yesterday that I needed to go to a park and just unwind and not think about modeling for a while. I am so used to dressing stylish that I couldn't find anything to wear that screamed park-wear. So after trying on this and that I finally decided to just layer a couple of tank tops and wear a pair of shorts...plain and simple!  (but of course I had to style it with a couple bracelets and a necklace) When we got there I noticed my husband's shirt didn't go with his pants and it bothered me...a lot. So I told him he should take his shirt off and just wear the t-shirt underneath. He was like, "I thought you were taking a day off from all this stuff!" but he also pointed out something to me. I am constantly styling. I style everything and anything I can get my hands on. I look at people on the street and I want to help them with their wardrobe...I actually feel sad when I see how some people dress. I styled our trip to the park!!
The reason why this was such a revelation to me is because lately I've been thinking about what I really want to do with my life. Modeling is great, I have had the most amazing experiences meeting the coolest people and I've made a lot of money. But it's not exactly the most fulfilling job. I would like to do something that uses my talents more, and now I am thinking, why not be a stylist?
It's just a thought, and something I need to think  more about  and learn more about but I think it would be something that I really would enjoy.
The park was beautiful and we had a little picnic under a tree facing a pond, chilling with the Canadian geese and reading a book, but most of all the park helped me answer a question I've had for a long time, "what am I good at?" and that is amazing!
  • Life in the T dot O

Since moving to Toronto a week ago, I have become a little confused with the customs and way they do business here. I always say I am "from Toronto" when working oversees, but that is simply because no one has ever heard of my city. (and if they have, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I come from there)
My city is called 'Oshawa'. There are jokes that we got the name when native Indians first discovered it. They were thinking about what they should call the city when one of them sneezed and made the sound "O-SHA-WA!!" And since then the city has been named Oshawa. It is a fairly small city, around 150,000 people. There is not much to do there except go to the "Oshawa Centre" which is the only mall in the city. If you do decide to go shopping there, just make sure your prepared to meet everyone you've ever known from highschool. Sometimes if I really need to go there for something, I wear a hat and sunglasses as a disguise. Can't I just buy some nail polish without having a half an hour conversation about "what we've been doing since high school" and them telling me they saw me on a big poster for Aleese (birth control) somewhere!
    (how embarrasing)
Now I don't really have to deal with that in Toronto. Since my husband and I moved here, not one person has stopped me on the street that recognizes me! I feel so free!
However, as I was saying, the way they do business here is a little strange to say the least.
For example, the other day my agent called and told me I have a job the next day. "for what?" I ask. "I don't know" he replies. "ok, can you send me the details when you have them?"
    "sure" he says.
An hour later I get a message with the time and the address. No descrīption of the job, no info about how much it pays. So I call him back. "hi, I got your message, so what is the job for? How much does it pay?"   "We don't know anything, it's a secret, they won't tell us" he says.
Okay...so the next day I go to this "secretive job" a little frightened, having no idea what I'm there for. I get there say hello and ask the client, "so what am I shooting for today?" She tries to quiet me "shhhhh" and shoves a "non dislosure" form in my face. "Please sign this before we tell you" she says. so I sign like three pages of tiny print...I did try to read it but the language was a little hard to understand. she told me it basically just means that you won't disclose any information about this job to anyone. Ok, so I sign it, and then she tells me which company the job is for (which I am not allowed to say) and how much it pays. Apparently the company does not want  anyone to know they are about to release this new product and an add campaign.
It was weired  though. There was another girl shooting before me and I was getting my makeup done in the studio while she was shooting and the client actually asked me to leave the studio while she was shooting!! I'm thinking, "ok, I already know what the product is, I'm going to be shooting with it in a minute...their nuts!!"
But apparently, this is the way they do business in Toronto.
"I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here, and I'm gonna give it my best shot."  (quote from Zoolander , it's so true! :))

strange...i sneeze more in toronto than i do in hong kong. too much nature in my area. too many rabbits and raccoons in the backyard. in fact, it kinda irritates me. lol! heck, i live right next to A.Y. Jackson Collegiate.

i know hk's like a hellhole in the summers, tho. but in the winter, hk is actually pretty nice.

oh, just another thing to add...
i realized on my last visit to HK half a year ago that it's actually much cleaner than toronto. toronto is filled with litter. and i mean, way too any cigarette butts scattered on the ground. granted, i litter the cigarette butts myself but that is because the city does not provide enough ashtrays for the public. toronto's got a lot to work on.

    that's just my two cents.

haha! but i'm not from hong kong. sure, my parents are but to be a little more politically correct, i am a CBC. Canadian, born and raised. i just find it too quiet around here. and yes, i'm aware of the clubbing scene. i know people are partying at places like The Docks and Circa but compared to HK's Lan Kwai Fong area, they close way too soon. and don't get me started on public transportation. haha! The MTR is way better than the TTC.
