Movie review: "Kung Fu Fighter"

Kung Fu Fighter features some solid action, but the problem is that there's not nearly enough of it. In a movie that runs ninety-six minutes, about seventy minutes consists of sappy melodrama and dopey comedy, which is not a very good ratio at all for what should be a straight-forward martial arts picture.

Movie review: "Tracing Shadow"

Like many recent Hong Kong releases, Tracing Shadow provides some decent, if totally forgettable, entertainment. The film doesn't really deviate too much from the usual formula, but the charisma of star/co-director Francis Ng helps to move matters along smoothly.

Virtual Console review: "Golden Axe" (arcade version)

One of the more unique beat-em-ups produced during the genre's heyday, Golden Axe throws a swords and sandals twist on to the usual festivities that make this a worthy purchase for fans of mindless video game violence, especially stuff that involves beating up dwarves in order to get power-ups.

Movie review: "Blood: The Last Vampire"

Based on a popular Japanese manga and anime, Blood: The Last Vampire would seem to have all of the elements to make a successful action/horror hybrid. Unfortunately, the would-be bloody vampire antics never really manage to generate any real excitement, mostly due to the fact that the special effects look like they were done by one guy on his outdated iMac.

Movie review: "DOA: Dead or Alive"

You would think that the formula for DOA would be a simple way to make a fun brainless action picture: take a bunch of babes and have them kick some ass. Unfortunately, even under the direction of Hong Kong veteran Corey Yuen, this film can't live up to the lowest of expectations.
