In a Nutshell
2009-05-03 3:04PM / 標準BLOG
These past couple months have been a roller coaster for me. On top of my never ending list of projects, I decided to apply for the SJSU animation/illustration program, plus I had to prepare for Berkeley's CMAT.
THE PORTFOLIO REVIEW:
But I've got good news. My portfolio got accepted into the program! So I'm an official sjsu animation/illustration major. I'm pretty happy and a bit shocked because most people who usually apply for the first time are in their third year, but I'm a second year student
. I worked very hard to prepare for this portfolio.....in addition to my classes I pushed myself to go to 3 hour model drawing sessions in the evenings every week and I ended up sacrificing my springbreak working on projects and the portfolio
. Afterwards I had to make a booklet out of my body of work. Twas difficult, BUT....all of it payed off at the end.
Here are some spreads from my portfolio. This is definitely the beginnings of my work...so later on, i'll be replacing old drawings and adding new sections that would showcase my work better. New sections such as storyboarding and what not will be added once I take certain classes.
Figure drawing: 1-2 minute pose
Figure Drawing: 5-10 Minute pose
Figure Drawing: 20 Minute Pose
Sketchbook: Environment Sketches
Sketchbook: Museum Sketches
Sketchbook: Animal Studies
Sketchbook: Monkey King Project Character Designs
Illustrations: Projects
Illustrations: Projects
OTHER WORK:
Here are also some work and sketches that I have completed since the last time I blogged XP.
Manticore Reference
Manticore Concept Design
I decided to draw a concept design of the Manticore which is a creature of mythology that usually is depicted having the body of a lion, head of a man and the tail of a scorpion.

A couple decent Figure Drawings that I have produced
A portrait of my roommate, Andrew
A portrait of my friend, Erica
And thats about it in regards to the work I've been doing. Now i've just got to make that final push to finish up my LAST major project =___=....
BERKELEY'S CMAT:
I unfortunately didn't take any photos at Berkeley's tournament, but for the most part, I enjoyed myself and I brought back TWO gold medals!
. I competed with my tradtional northern form as well as my contemporary eagle claw form. I saw lots of talented people out there this year including a couple team members from the philippines, Canada, as well as Russia.
Me, Sifu Fong, and Stuart Mayo (performed a pretty awesome Tongbei quan form) at CMAT
Eagle Claw at the San Francisco's Cherry Blossom Festival
SO...........in a nutshell, life is pretty good: I got accepted into the animation illustration program and I brought back two gold medals

Spring is Upon Us
2009-03-21 3:26PM / 標準BLOG
Wow...haven't been on here for about two months. I'm pooped...and a bit frustrated right now, so I might as well blog =__=....haha.
I've been quite busy lately. The projects I've been doing for my illustration classes have taken up most of my time and sometimes I feel....VERY confined in my room. It doesn't help that my room is extremely cramped and small in san jose lol....I barely have enough room to paint on my desk! >:O...*sigh*....
So what works have I been producing? Since I'm taking an illustration painting class, we are being taught how to use wet mediums (paint and etc). Most of the people in my class have never painted before, so it can be a pretty difficult concept to grasp because you need to learn how to use the paint in any given situation. If you want a slight value change, you glaze it over with a small amount of pigment and a glazing medium.....if you want your objects to seem 3d, you need to decide whether they have sharp edges or soft edges. So theres a lot of thinking that is involved when you're painting.......something that most people don't know. I've had some mileage with paint (oil and acrylic) since I was 13...but I wouldn't say I'm a very good painter XP.
For one of our major projects for the class, we have to render a still life of composed objects in black/white AND in color. I already finished my black and white rendering this week and it was a pain in the butt, but at the same time I had fun working on it. I never would have thought I would be able to render something like this in my life, haha. It was quite a challenge, but I finished and scored 94! whoot!
Black and White rendering - Acrylic "Home Cooking"
Working on the painting wasn't THAT bad....getting the photo reference was worse lol. I had two concepts in mind for my photo:
1. Wushu/chinese opera theme
2. Cooking at Home theme
The wushu concept never worked out unfortunately......mainly because it was difficult composing the objects that I was using. I used several wushu weapons (double hooks, broadsword, straightsword, chain, etc) as well as my uniforms and some chinese opera props and costumes that I borrowed from a friend. I tried composing most of the objects more than once, but the colors and patterns of the costume/uniform fabrics were too bright and clashed with one another.
The cooking theme was better and I liked the overall feel of it because the shapes seemed very natural, organic, and simple. I had man made items as well as organic items...so that was a nice contrast to have :). Unfortunately, my professor didn't approve my photo the first week because I incporporated too much bokchoy/gai lan into my still life, so a portion of it was an explosion of green -___-. So the second week I had to buy another fish and more prawns. I had literally two days each week to shoot everything because all of my cooking stuff was at home....*sigh*...it was quite exhausting.
San Jose City Hall
I've also been working on a couple other misc. things in my sketchbook as well.....mainly during my GE classes which are all pretty dry -__-....haha.
Pigsy - Monkey King Project concept
Another concept that will most likely not be used for the sjsu monkey king project, but its ok.
Lionfish Study
Lionfish Dragon Concept
And a couple figure drawings.......I'm REALLY weak when it comes to drawing the human figure. I just don't find it as interesting as drawing animals :/.....but, I gotta learn how to draw it

Nude women are nothing new to me.....HAHA...XD
*Sigh*...I've got so many things to work on, and I feel like I can't produce any good work. The portfolio review deadline for the sjsu illustration/animation program is coming up in less than a month! T_T. I'm in such a panic right now o_o;;;....aghhhhh....
Other Stuff:
Other than school, everything is alright I guess. Wushu has been grueling since CMAT is coming up in less than a month too.......and I don't feel entirely ready -__-. But I'm looking forward to it, cmat is always fun :D....but the waiting is NOT lol.
Spring Festival Demo....I've got other pictures...but too lazy to upload them, haha. Sorry
Until next time

Winter Vacation Has Ended T_T...
2009-01-21 1:44PM / 標準BLOG
Winter vacation is almost over for me and I've got about two more days of freedom before school starts on Thursday -__-. I have a strong feeling i'm going to die this semester under the massive weight of work...I can just feel it.
Sometimes I wish life was a bit more simpler. I wish animosity and hatred did not exist. I wish...... happiness and peace were easier to obtain. *Sigh*....we live in such an imperfect world, but I guess that's what makes life worth living T_T...
I think i'll share some work. The last batch before school starts....
Deyoung Museum:
Panther Statue - Pen, ink wash
Not much to say about this one. Just trying to practice my usage of shadow shapes to capture form.
Kangaroo and Dog Statue - Pen, ink wash, water color
A statue I found outside of the Deyoung Museum in San Francisco. This is another shadow study using ink. I didn't think that this one would turn out very well...but it actually turned out not bad, I just have to work faster because the light would constantly change while I was working on it.
Wharf/Pier 39:
Pier 39 Tower Sketch - Pen, ink wash, water color
The next day I went down to the pier in San Francisco to do some sketching. This small tower (can't remember if it has a name...) was beside the sea lions. There are some perspective issues, but I like how I utilized my blacks in this sketch.
Bay Bridge by the Dock - Pen, ink wash, water color
The second sketch from my pier 39 trip. While I was walking back to the Ferry building, I walked pass this long dock that had a pretty good view of the bay bridge. So I laid in all of the line work on location, took a picture, and worked the rest at home.
I remember walking along this same dock last year with a couple friends...its actually a pretty nice place to just take someone out to sit, think, and watch t,he bridge's lights luminate across the water
.
2nd California Academy of Sciences Trip:
I also made a second trip to the Academy of Sciences. I spent most of my time sketching there, but I finally got to see their planetarium which was pretty cool.
Beaded Lizard Sketches - pen, ink wash, water color
Waxy Monkey Frogs - pen, ink wash, water color
These statuesque frogs were AWESOME models, haha.
Moray Eel Sketches - Pen, ink wash, water color
I'm not too thrilled with this page probably because I couldn't get a comfortable position to draw in. Since the aquarium was low too the floor, I had to do some sort of squat stance in order to gesture these in. Plus the people surrounding me were a bit irritating -__-;;;...
Oh, and there wasn't a two headed moray eel on display. I drew the heads of two different species of eel on my page and later decided to just fuse them together XP, haha.
Steinhart Coral Reef Exhibit Sketch - Pen, ink wash, water color
This page is probably one of my favorites. I was inspired by one of the sketches of and upper-classmen at san jose state.
Tyrannosaurus Skeleton - Pen, ink wash, water color
This would be the Tyrannosaurus skeleton at the Cal Acad of Sciences.
Other Things:
Here are some sketchbook pages that I have completed on the side.
The following two drawings are two of four drawings from a portrait series I've been working on. So these two would go with the dragon and phoenix portrait that I posted in my last blog entry.
Lion Portrait - Pen, Ink wash, water color
Xuan Wu Portrait - Pen, ink wash, water color
The Three Ox Demons - Pen, ink wash, water color
This is another concept design that I made for the SJSU monkey King project. In the script that the group created, they included three ox demons that attack Sun Wukong. I thought it would be interesting to assign each character a specific weapon according to their body type/personality. From the beginning I wanted to include a long weapon, a flexible weapon, and a short weapon...so I figured the gwan dao, meteor hammer, and double broadswords would be appropriate.
Since the first demon is pretty bulky compared to the other two, I thought the gwan dao would be most suitable for him.
The second demon is the smallest out of the three, so I gave him a long range flexible weapon. He wields the meteor hammer.
The third demon is kinda lanky, but agile...so I gave him double broadswords.
Alright, thats all for now :D

Stuff and More Stuff
2009-01-09 1:40PM / 標準BLOG
I'm still on vacation and its been pretty productive for the most part. I've been going out to sketch quite often...and when I'm not out, i'm drawing at home, haha. Television and video games are no longer a part of my daily routine, though I think i should cut back on my internet time
lol.
San Francisco Japantown
I bused down to SF's Japantown one day to get a couple sketches in my sketchbook since I'm so horrible at drawing people and environments, haha. Unfortunately, the weather was overcast, so I couldn't draw the pagoda outside. I decided that I should just draw the cafe and the bakery instead.
Cafe Hona Sketch - Pen, Ink wash, and water color
I know there are several problems with this one...like perspective issues and wonky chairs (I was getting kinda tired and lazy), but I finished this one in one sitting which is good...i guess? hehe.
Anderson Bakery - Pen, ink wash, water color
I actually didn't finish this one in one sitting because I was too tired from the previous sketch. So I took a picture and worked on this one at home. I'm slightly dissapointed with this one because it seems a bit "stiff"....I'm guessing its because I worked from a photo. The reason why I try not to work from photos is because you cannot capture the form of an object through a photograph because its already a 2D image. If you're working from a 2D image, most likely your drawing will look 2D...unless you're REALLY good XP. Plus, working from a photo won't really help improve your skills in "catching the moment".
Pagoda - Pen, ink wash, water color
A sketch that I finished today. The weather was still overcast, but fortunately it didn't rain while I was drawing it, haha. I feel that this one turned out alright...though I know there are some ellipse issues.
2nd SF Zoo Trip
I made a second trip to the SF zoo on wednesday because every first wednesday of the month, SF residents are allowed free admission. Surprisingly there were very few people at the zoo that day which made the trip a bit more relaxing

Zebra, Kudu, and Giraffe - Pen, ink wash, water color
I was pretty lucky when I arrived because one of the giraffes was lying pretty close to the barrier, so I got a nice view of him/her from where I was standing.
Lion monkey? Gibbon, Howler monkey, a couple colorful ducks - Pen, ink wash, water color
Monkeys are pretty difficult to draw since they're constantly moving most of the time. I thought the howler monkey sketch wasn't going to turn out that well since he moved right when I was about to ink it....but luckily he returned to the exact same spot with the exact same pose later on, haha XD.
Black Swan, Tapir Studies - Pen, ink wash, water color
Not much to say about these...actually, I never knew the tapir body was so boxy o_O...
Lioness and Tiger Studies - Pen, ink wash, water color
I was lucky that day because the lioness was lying sooooo close to the window, so I decided to make it a detailed study...unfortunately she kept moving within every couple minutes, so yea...I kinda messed up and got too dark too fast
Other Stuff
And when I'm not out...I've been working on these. The first two drawings are just shadow studies of my face, plus something else lol...they're part of a four part series.
Dragon Portrait - Pen, Ink wash, water color
Phoenix Portrait - Pen, ink wash, water color
Sandy (Journey to the West) - Pen, Ink wash, water color
This is my concept design for Sandy from the Chinese folklore, Journey to the West. I know it doesn't look like you're traditional Sandy, but I wanted to try something more aquatic.
And yep, thats all for now :D

Bring in the New '09!
2009-01-01 1:13PM / 標準BLOG
Gosh...2008 is about to end and 2009 will begin in about 4 hours? haha...
I would probably go on and blog about the significance of the passing year like I do every year...but I'd rather not go into detail.
In 2008 I've met quite a few friends through my art major and also through wushu as well....but there are several friends of mine that are beginning to, or have already drifted away from me. It wasn't my choice to drift away, but it was theirs unfortunately........The terrible part is that, I do not know the reason why they want to dis-associate with me, but I guess its sometimes better for it be left alone than it to be stressed to the point of uselessness. Have I caused that much grief for a couple of my friends to leave me? I can't really think of anything I would've done...other than being understanding and nice, like I've always been doing.
Anyways..enough of the emo-deep thinking. Overall, 2008 has had its good times and bad times...but the good times are definitely more significant to me. Compared to 2007, my technical skills in drawing has risen and I'm quite happy with that
. Hopefully it will continue that way with the coming year, haha. And I also got to give thanks to all my friends and teachers who have helped me in 2008, much appreciated
.
And now, i've got quite a few things to share. I'm still on vacation and its been awesome...I've been going out a lot more to draw and I almost completed two weeks worth of sketches. My plan for this vacation is go to the major highlights and San Francisco and sketch whatevers out there. Probably by then I'll have some nice sketches that could possibly be included in my art portfolio to get into the SJSU illustration/animation program XP.
SF Westfield Mall Foodcourt Study - Pen and Ink wash
So...yea, I still need some work on perspective and drawing people in environments, but hey, at least I tried? lol. Drawing people in an environment is pretty difficult since people are constantly moving, plus you're under this paranoia that they might notice that you're drawing them and might find it offensive/creepy o_O.
Monkey King Design - Pen/ink wash and blue watercolor which doesn't show because of my lame scanner -__-...
So, several sjsu students have been working on a project based off of the Monkey King legend called Journey to the West. And so I decided to take part in it by drawing a concept for Sun Wukong. I know that this concept looks a bit odd since it doesn't look like the monkey king that everyone is familiar with, but I decided to try something different by testing out a different species of monkey. Since the project is based off of Chinese legend/myth, I decided that it would be more appropriate to base the character off of a monkey species that originates from China. This design is based off of the Chinese Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey.
A Couple Facial Expressions - Blue ball point pen
The last one kinda resembles the grinch o_O...so ignore that one please, LOL.
Zoo
A couple days ago, I went to the San Francisco zoo with a group of SJSU friends to sketch the animals. The fee for the zoo now is ridiculously expensive...$15 for general admission?! Luckily I'm an SF resident so I got $3 off...but still, thats not much.
Koala, wallabies, cassowary, polar bear - Pen, Inkwash, blue ball point pen
I need work drawing kangaroos/wallabies, but the cassowary turned out alright.
Polar bear, flamingos, koala - pen, blue ball point pen, ink wash
The Koala was actually doing something for a change, haha...
Lions, alligator, pig - pen, blue ball point pen, ink wash
The lions are probably my favorite on this page
Golden Gate Park
The Day after, I went to sketch at Golden Gate Park. I must go there more often since there are lots of interesting statues, plants, and buildings XD.
Head sketches of the sphinx and lion statues in front of the Deyong Museum - Pen and ink wash
Cellist - Pen and ink wash
Well...this is definitely not that great...but I'm kinda happy that I got the shadow patterns on the face to be recognizable, lol...this guy was a great model to sketch so I tipped him a dollar :D
"Cranking out the Juice" - Pen, ink wash, and blue water color that doesn't show up well...
Another statue I found. I believe this one depicts the making of wine? or juice? There were fruits along the base, so thats what I assume o_O.
While working on these drawings, I got so many people talking to me...it was pretty surprising how much I attract people when I got out and draw o_o;;;....Two people even asked me if they could take a picture of me while I was drawing, HAHA...funny XD.
Anyways...enough said. I wish everyone a prosperous new year
